iPhone Storage Tip: Eliminate Duplicate Photos Hassle-Free With This Hack

Taking a photo that encapsulates a core memory, or even one that details the more mundane moments of life, is something that many people tend to do.

    CNET Tech Tips logo

However, most of us take the same shot several times over before capturing the “right” image — and then we promptly forget to delete the extras. This results in a slew of duplicate images that hog precious storage space on our iPhone or in iCloud.

Fortunately, there’s an easy way around this issue that is built into your iPhone if you have iOS 16 or later.

Apple introduced its “duplicate detection” feature in 2022, and it works just as its name suggests. The tool uses on-device AI to identify identical images and aggregate them in an easy-to-find album in the Photos app. Apple says the iPhone classifies duplicates not only as exact copies, but also as photos that appear to be the same but have unique resolutions, file formats, or other slight differences.

Make sure to turn on iCloud syncing before going through the step-by-step process below.

Here’s how to use the iPhone’s built-in tool to free up storage space:

    1. Open the Photos app on your iPhone.

    2. Tap on the Albums tab at the bottom of the screen.

    3. Scroll down to the Utilities section and tap Duplicates. This is where you can view all the duplicate photos on your iPhone and delete them, either individually or at once.

    4. For the latter option, tap Select in the top right corner.

    5. Tap Select All to merge all the duplicate photos your iPhone detects and delete them at the same time.

    6. If you want to delete duplicates individually, scroll up and tap Merge on your chosen selection of duplicate images. Then tap Merge [number] Copies to delete duplicates. Go down the line and repeat this step for all the identical photos you want to delete.

Merging keeps the best version of the photo in your library. The duplicates are moved to the Recently Deleted album.

Don’t Waste Paper This Earth Day, Sign Documents Right on Your iPhone

Apple has introduced a lot of useful iPhone features with iOS 17 and its updates, like Podcast transcripts and the Journal app. You may not know that in 2015, Apple released iOS 9 with a feature called Markup that makes it easy to sign certain documents, like PDFs and screenshots, right from your iPhone; no paper required.

    CNET Tech Tips logo

“With Markup, you can edit screenshots and photos, select different opacity and font thickness, and even add a signature to a PDF document,” Apple wrote online. That means you don’t have to print out a document to sign it, saving you money on printer ink, which can cost up to $60 per cartridge.

Here’s how to sign certain documents right on your iPhone.

Easily sign a document on your iPhone

Menu showing Add Sticker, Add Text, Add Signature and Add Shape

If the document you want to sign is in an email, first save it to Files. Here’s how you sign it from there.

    1. Open Files.
    2. Tap the document you want to sign.
    3. Tap the icon across the bottom of your screen that looks like a pen tip in a circle.
    4. Tap Add Signature.
    5. Sign your name on this new screen with your finger then tap Done.

Your signature will appear on the page, and you can place it wherever you want. You can also resize your signature if it’s too small or large for the signing area. Once you’ve moved and resized your signature, tap Done in the top-right corner of the document to save it.

Your signature will also be saved on your iPhone and can be used later. To use a saved signature, follow the above instructions and tap Add Signature, then select your previous signature, or you can tap Add or Remove Signature to create a new one.

Once you’ve signed and saved the file, you can attach it to an email or send it however you want. Congratulations! You just saved yourself money on printer ink and potentially a run to an office supply store.

Watch FA Cup Semifinal Soccer: Livestream Coventry vs. Man United From Anywhere

Former Man United star Mark Robins will attempt to mastermind an FA Cup upset against his former club as his underdog Coventry side take on the English Premier League giants in this semifinal clash at Wembley.

The Championship side have had a remarkable run to the last four of this tournament for only the second time in the club’s history. The Sky Blues set up this fixture with an epic 3-2 quarterfinal win at top-flight Wolves last month.

The FA Cup offers Man United a final chance of silverware in what’s been a disappointing season for the Red Devils. Boss Erik ten Hag will be looking for the same spirit from his players that saw them knock out title-chasing Liverpool in the last round.

Below, we’ll outline the best live TV streaming services to use to watch the game live, wherever you are in the world.

Coventry City vs. Manchester United: When and where?

Coventry City take on Manchester United in this FA Cup semifinal at Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday, April 21. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. BST local time in the UK, which is 10:30 a.m. ET or 7:30 a.m. PT in the US and Canada, and 12:30 a.m. AEST on Monday, April 22, in Australia.

How to watch the Coventry vs. Man United game online from anywhere using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view the game locally, you may need a different way to watch the game — that’s where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds on game day by encrypting your traffic, and it’s also a great idea if you’re traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you’re able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the game. Most VPNs, like our Editors’ Choice, ExpressVPN, make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you’re streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

This semifinal clash is streaming exclusively live in the US on ESPN Plus. Kickoff is at 10:30 a.m. ET on Sunday for viewers in the States.

Can I livestream the Coventry vs. Man United game in the UK?

The great news for footy fans in the UK is that free-to-air broadcasters the BBC and ITV are sharing live duties for this season’s FA Cup, with this game being shown on ITV.

Coverage begins on ITV1 at 2:30 p.m. BST ahead of the 3 p.m. kickoff.

Livestream Coventry vs. Man United in Canada

Canadian soccer fans looking to watch this FA Cup fixture can watch all the action live via Sportsnet.

Livestream the Coventry vs. Man United game in Australia

ViacomCBS holds the broadcast rights for the FA Cup in Australia, which means you can watch matches from the tournament live Down Under via streaming service Paramount Plus. Kickoff is at 12:30 a.m. AEST in the early hours of Monday morning.

Quick tips for streaming the FA Cup using a VPN

    • With four variables at play — your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN — your experience and success when streaming FA Cup matches may vary.
    • If you don’t see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the “search for city or country” option.
    • If you’re having trouble getting the game after you’ve turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs — like Roku — don’t have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you’ll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you’re using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
    • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network’s sports app, you’ll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
    • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you’re using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend Brave.

    Everyday Wordle tips

I’ve written a lot about Wordle — from covering its 1,000th word to my list of the best starter words to a helpful two-step strategy to news about controversial word changes. I’ve even rounded up what I learned playing the hit online word puzzle for a full year. So if you’re rethinking your need for the actual answer, you might try tips from one of those stories.

Still need a starter word? One person told me they just look around and choose a five-letter object that they’ve spotted to use as their starter word — such as COUCH or CHAIR. I tend to stick to starter words that have the most popular letters used in English words. I like TRAIN as a starter, though I have a friend who uses TRAIL. I’ve read that people use the financial term ROATE, but I like to use words I actually know.

    What is Wordle?

If you read this far, you know how to play. You have six chances to guess a five-letter word, and the game gives you feedback as to whether the letters you’ve guessed are in the puzzle, and if they’re in the same spot where you guessed they are. The New York Times bought the game from creator Josh Wardle for seven figures in 2022. Wardle famously created the game for his partner, and let her narrow down the 12,000 five-letter words in the English language to just 2,500, creating the database of answers. It was convenient, too, that he has a name that plays off “word.”

A Times spokesperson told me it lists the very first Wordle as appearing on June 19, 2021, and the paper celebrated the game’s 1000th word on March 15. Spoiler: That 1000th word was ERUPT. As in, “Dad will erupt if the Wordle is so tough he loses his streak.”

There are other fun games in the Times Games stable. My latest addiction is Connections, which I think is trickier than Wordle. This is the game where you look at a grid of 16 words and try to put them into four groups of related words. Sometimes the relationships between the words are pretty out there — like the time when it was four words that all began with rock bands, such as “Rushmore” and “journeyman.” (Connections got a little sassy on April Fools’ Day with an all-emoji puzzle. Some gamers did NOT find that funny.)

Spelling Bee is a popular Times game too. And there’s a new game that’s still in beta, Strands, which I’m trying to master.

  • Buried in Tabs? Use This Mac Hack to Organize Your Windows

Buried in Tabs? Use This Mac Hack to Organize Your Windows

Toggling through each of your open tabs to find the right one can be a frustrating waste of time, especially if you work from home on a laptop. Instead of clicking through dozens of tabs to find the one you’re searching for, you can use this easy Mac hack to glance through your windows more efficiently.

Mac split-screen mode allows you to stick two apps (or two separate browser windows) on different sides of your display. That way, you can easily glance between windows without having to click through or use the Command + Tab shortcut to toggle through windows. Mac split-screen view is great for looking at data while writing a report, playing a video while you multitask or keeping a chat window open while you’re working.

Here’s how you can set up split-screen mode on Mac to enhance your productivity.

Read More: Best MacBooks for 2024

How to enter Split View on a Mac

    1. Make sure neither window you want to use is in full-screen mode.

    2. In one of the windows you want to use, place your cursor over the green button in the top left. Instead of clicking to maximize the window, hover until you see a drop-down menu.

    3. Select Tile Window to Left of Screen or Tile Window to Right of Screen. Your Mac will automatically enter split-screen mode.

    4. From there, other open windows will be displayed on the opposite side of the screen. Click the window you want on the rest of your screen, and it will fill the remaining half.

    5. If you want to adjust the size of the windows, use the slider in the center of the screen.

In Split View, you’ll be able to look at both windows simultaneously. Multitask away!

How to exit split screen on Macs

If you’re done using the split-screen layout, here’s how to get out of it:

    1. Move your cursor to the top of the screen until you see the sizing buttons at the top left of each window.

    2. Click the red button to close that window or the green button to exit split screen.

    3. Don’t panic! Your other window is still open — it’s just hidden in full-screen mode. To access it again, press the Mission Control button (F3) on the top row of your keyboard.

    4. You should see two options at the top of the screen: Desktop and whatever window you had in split-screen mode. Click the other window, and use the green sizing button in the top left if you want to exit full-screen mode.

If you’re the kind of person (like me) who might need more than two windows open, you can always manually resize windows to fit three or four on your screen at once. The experience just won’t be as visually clean as using tiled windows.

What is the keyboard shortcut for split screen on Mac?

Mac keyboard shortcuts are abundant and handy, including one for split screen. Start by using control + command + F to enter full-screen mode. From there you can hit F3 to pull up Mission Control, then drag and drop the second app you want in your split screen next to your original window. It should display a preview of what the split screen will look like, along with a “+” (plus sign) next to it. Click back into the newly tiled apps and you’ll be in Split View.

If you want to get into Split View even faster, you can create your own keyboard shortcut. Go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > App Shortcuts. You can click the + button to add a command named “Tile Window to Left of Screen” using your desired shortcut. Once you’ve activated the shortcut, your active window will tile to the left side of the screen and you can simply select a second window to be added to your split screen.

Read More: The Keyboard Shortcut You’ll Use More Than Ctrl + Z

Why won’t my Mac do split screen?

First, make sure you’re not currently in fullscreen mode. The split screen only works from the normal window view. If that’s not the issue, go to System Preferences > Desktop & Dock and scroll to the bottom to see whether Displays have separate Spaces enabled. If not, enable it.

If you don’t see that option in the Mission Control menu, make sure you’ve updated to MacOS 10.11 or later. You can check your current OS version by clicking the Apple icon in the top left menu and then selecting About this Mac. If you’re using an earlier version, you’ll have to update by clicking the Software Update button on that screen.

Keep in mind that not all apps support split screens. If you’ve tried everything else and the app still won’t tile in split-screen mode, the app probably doesn’t offer split-screen mode.

How do you split screens on a Mac without full screen?

The official split-screen function on Macs (called “Split View”) automatically splits two windows in full screen. If you don’t want the full-screen view (perhaps because you want to be able to quickly navigate between browser tabs), you can manually drag your windows to fit the desired space. This option gives you a little more customization than Split View.

Boston Dynamics turned heads when it launched the Atlas way back in 2013. The humanoid robot could run, jump and dance, and the meme-worthy videos it produced have gobbled up tens of millions of views on YouTube over the past 11 years. Now, the Hyundai-owned robotics company is saying goodbye to Atlas upon its retirement with a send-off video showing off the humanoid robot one last time.

The blooper reel/highlight video shows Atlas in all of its glory as it performs backflips, runs obstacle courses and busts some dance moves. Boston Dynamics has never been one to shy away from showing its robots taking a few bumps as well. Around the 18-second mark, Atlas runs across a balance beam, stumbles, falls and grasps its robotic groin in simulated pain. Around the 1-minute mark, Atlas performs a front flip, lands low and hydraulic fluid shoots out of both kneecaps. As someone on the cusp of middle age, I’ve never identified with a robot more in my life.

It ends with Atlas giving a few waves and a bow. The retirement of Atlas marks a turning point for Boston Dynamics as the robot captured the imagination of millions throughout its life. Whether it was a big dance number with Spot, Boston Dynamics’ robot dog or watching it work a parkour course, every time Atlas did something, the Internet paid attention to it, even if it was terrible at karate.

    Atlas and Spot

Atlas started life as a contest project for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, known as DARPA. The robot was based on the Boston Dynamics’ Petman project, which was originally made to test the performance of protective clothing in hazardous environments. The Petman hydraulic robot had sensors all over its body that could detect if chemicals were leaking through the biohazard suits it wore during testing.

In 2013, DARPA issued a robotics challenge, and Boston Dynamics helped. The company built several Atlas robots that were issued to the competitors so they didn’t have to build robots from scratch. At one point, DARPA requested that Boston Dynamics improve Atlas’ design and capabilities, which the company did in 2015.

After the contest, Atlas continued to star in Internet videos as Boston Dynamics tested and improved its capabilities. Over the years, the robot was improved to do more advanced parkour and gymnastics. Hyundai, which has its own robotics division, bought Boston Dynamics in 2021.

Boston Dynamics was also well-known for its robotic dog, Spot, which could herd sheep like a real dog and it could be walked remotely. It even helped protect medical workers from COVID-19. It eventually went on sale and remains a part of Boston Dynamics’ lineup. Spot has danced with BTS, a South Korean boy band, and it also helps Hyundai with safety operations in one of its plants in South Korea.

In its later years, it seemed like Atlas was becoming primed for work use. Boston Dynamics had videos of the robot helping out on simulated construction sites and performing basic factory work. The factory work video was released two months ago.

One Atlas may be retiring, but his successor is on the way. In tandem with the retirement news, Boston Dynamics announced a new all-electric robot. It’ll still be called Atlas, and the company said that they’re working with Hyundai to develop the new technology. In addition to other enhancements, the new humanoid robot will feature a broader range of motion, will be stronger than it was before, and have new gripper variations to lift more types of items.

Boston Dynamics didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
