  • Samsung’s One UI 6 Update Gives Galaxy Phones an AI Camera Boost

Samsung’s One UI 6 Update Gives Galaxy Phones an AI Camera Boost

Samsung’s One UI 6 update will bring a bevy of new camera features to Galaxy phones, some of which are powered by AI.

The update, which is based on Google’s broader Android 14 software, is said to have begun rolling out to certain countries in Europe and will be arriving in the US in the coming weeks. The launch comes as AI is beginning to play a larger role in smartphones, as recent announcements from Google and Qualcomm have indicated.

Samsung appears to be taking a page from Apple and Google when it comes to certain camera-related features in One UI 6. For example, a feature called AI Image Clipping will let Galaxy users cut certain objects out of a photo and turn them into stickers that can be placed on other photos. Apple has a similar feature in its recently launched iOS 17 iPhone update. A GIF within Samsung’s press release also shows the sticker being resized after it’s been pasted onto another image, which is somewhat reminiscent of Google’s Magic Editor tool for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.

Samsung is also building on its Galaxy Enhance-X app, an existing app with extra photo-editing tools, like the ability to sharpen older photos similar to Google’s Photo Unblur. With One UI 6, that app will get new capabilities such as Sky Guide, which uses AI to identify constellations and stars after taking a photo of the night sky.

You’ll also be able to apply Samsung’s Single Take feature in Enhance-X to videos and images with motion that you’ve already captured. Single Take is a camera mode on Samsung phones that lets you capture multiple images at a time in different styles by tapping the shutter button once. In Enhance-X, it sounds like your phone will be able to extract the best stills and clips from existing images using Single Take. Other features coming to the app include the ability to sharpen blurriness from a smudged camera lens in photos and turn regular videos into slow motion clips by generating extra frames.

A photo of Samsung's Enhance-X app showing Single Take

Aside from these AI-powered features, the company is hoping to make using the camera more convenient. The update should improve document scanning, and you’ll be able to switch to a higher resolution shooting mode more easily in the camera app. If you have frequent camera modes that you prefer, such as panorama or portrait, you’ll also be able to save them directly to the home screen as widgets. Samsung is also updating the editing tools layout in the camera app and adding undo and redo buttons for toggling between edits.

Samsung’s One UI 6 update is another sign that smartphone makers are seeking new ways to incorporate AI into current and future products. AI has played an important role in smartphones for years when it comes to features like voice recognition, language translation and object recognition in photos. But the boom in generative artificial intelligence, or AI that can create content based on prompts, following the success of ChatGPT, has fueled greater interest in AI.

Qualcomm designed its next-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 smartphone chip around AI use cases and applications. The AI-powered photo-editing features in the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro are the biggest factors that separate them from last year’s Pixel 7 family. And Apple is said to be developing new AI features for iOS 18, according to Bloomberg. Now, we’re getting a sense of how Samsung will incorporate AI into its Galaxy phones with One UI 6.

Samsung’s new software, launched in beta for the Galaxy S23 in August, and social media posts spotted by 9to5Google and Android Authority suggest the software has launched in parts of Europe. A Samsung spokesperson told CNET it will come to US devices in the coming weeks.

  • Apple ‘Scary Fast’ Event: What We Expect to See Tonight

Apple ‘Scary Fast’ Event: What We Expect to See Tonight

You won’t need to wait until Halloween to receive treats from Apple. The company is hosting a product launch event online tonight at 5 p.m. PT (8 p.m. ET). If you peep the Apple Events page, you’ll see the Apple logo morphing into a version of the Finder icon that vaguely resembles a jack-o’-lantern. It not only fits into the Halloween theme for this time of year but also gives us a hint that it will be a Mac-related announcement.

And that would make sense, since Apple released new iPhones in September and then followed that up last week with a new Apple Pencil (but no new iPads). It’s too early for another iPhone, and if Apple had new iPads to roll out, we would have seen them last week. That leaves Macs as the chief suspects for Monday’s event.

    M3 iMac on the way?

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is prepping a new 24-inch iMac based on a new M3 processor. The current iMac is nearly two-and-a-half years old, so it’s well overdue for a refresh. Apple released the M1 iMac in May 2021, and it has yet to update it with the M2 chip that can be found in the company’s MacBook, Mac Mini, Mac Studio and Mac Pro lines.

The rumors point to a spec update and not a design overhaul, other than perhaps different color options. The current iMac is already available in a rainbow of colors: blue, green, pink, silver, yellow, orange and purple.

    Apple iMac with M1 chip

    M3 MacBooks, too?

Gurman also points out that stock is low for MacBook Pros, which could be a hint that new models are coming soon. The 13-inch MacBook Pro is the oldest MacBook in Apple’s lineup. It was released in June 2022 with Apple’s M2 chip. It could get the M3 treatment alongside the iMac on Monday. If the 13-inch MacBook Pro receives an update, it could mean the end of the much-derided Touch Bar that’s not as useful as simply having a row of physical Function keys above the keyboard. The 13-inch Pro is the last MacBook equipped with the Touch Bar.

Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch Touch bar

Apple is famously tight-lipped ahead of its product announcements, so we won’t know what it has in store until Monday’s event. My best guess? We see a new M3 iMac. And if Apple rolls out the M3 chip to the 13-inch MacBook Pro, then we will also get a 13-inch M3 MacBook Air update. The least compelling MacBook Pro is the 13-inch model, and I don’t see it headlining Apple’s M3 MacBook announcement. The 13-inch MacBook Air is much more popular and is also primed for an update; it was last updated at WWDC in June 2022 with an M2 chip alongside the 13-inch Pro.

Stock may be low for the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros, but they are newer than their smaller, 13-inch sibling. These models were released in January 2023 with Apple’s M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. I’d wager it won’t be until 2024 that we see them updated with M3 Pro and Max chips.

What about the 15-inch MacBook Air, you ask? It’s not even six months old, far too new to receive an M3 update. Perhaps Apple will close or remove entirely the $200 price gap between it and the 13-inch model if the 13-inch model moves to the M3 and the 15-inch Air stays with the M2. Hopefully, that means the 15-inch Air gets a price cut and not the other way around, with the starting price of the 13-inch Air going up. Completing the MacBook Air shuffle could be the M2 Air replacing the M1 Air as the entry-level MacBook Air model at $999.

Again, Apple’s “Scary Fast” event starts at 5 p.m. PT (8 p.m. ET, 1 a.m. BST, 11 a.m. AEDT) tonight and can be streamed live on Apple’s website and Apple TV.

If you’re in the market for some high-end wireless headphones or ANC earbuds, you really do need to consider what Sony has to offer before making a purchase anywhere else. The WH-1000XM5 and WF-1000XM5 are among the best you can buy, and right now you can get your hands on a pair of either with a fairly considerable discount.

That discount comes via Amazon, with the Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones now just $330 (down from $400) and the WFH-1000XM5 earbuds yours for just $250 (down from $300) if you act quickly. Amazon hasn’t said when either of these deals will come to an end, so you should consider ordering now if you want to make sure you lock in these discounted prices.

Both of these offer active noise cancellation and long battery life, but there are other options if you’d rather spend a little less. The Sony WH-CH720N are a solid choice and are just $98 today — a big saving over the $150 you’d normally pay.

Looking for cheaper earbuds than the premium WFH-1000XM5? The Sony LinkBuds S are discounted by $72 today, making them just $128. While their sound and noise canceling don’t quite measure up to the XM5’s, they’re still a solid set of earbuds.

Keep in mind that not all colors are always part of these deals so double-check the price before you add anything to your cart. There are other deals to be had on the Sony audio page on Amazon, so make sure to peruse them all before making your choice.

With inflation still pretty high, you’re probably looking to make every penny count. And one of the best ways to save some cash is by purchasing your groceries and other everyday essentials in bulk. A Costco Gold Star membership is typically $60 per year. But when you sign up right now through StackSocial, you’ll automatically get $40 back in the form of a digital Costco gift card, which essentially drops the price down to just $20.

This offer is available only to new customers, or those whose memberships have been expired for more than 18 months. • Snag One of Our Favorite VPNs for Just $3 Monthly With a Discounted Subscription

Snag One of Our Favorite VPNs for Just $3 Monthly With a Discounted Subscription

There are a lot of things that a VPN can help with, whether it’s adding a layer of security or letting you access content that would otherwise be locked due to your location. While VPNs tend to be expensive, you can get some big savings if you go for longer subscription periods, and the same goes for IPVanish, one of the best around. If you grab the two-year subscription, you’ll get a whopping 76% off, which comes out to just $3 per month. If two years sounds like a lot to you, there’s a yearly subscription discount that’s almost as hefty at 73% off, which is $3.50 per month. Whichever deal subscription period you decide to go for, do it quick, because this deal ends on Nov. 13.

IPVanish helps protect you when you’re using an unsecured Wi-Fi connection, like at a coffee shop, but it can also be super handy even when you’re at home and using your trusted network. Why? Because with servers in more than 75 regions, it can help you appear as if you’re somewhere else. And that’s huge if you want to watch content that might not be available in your country.

IPVanish can help you route your internet traffic via other countries to unlock content otherwise not available easily (or at all) in your home area, including movies, TV shows and sports. The service doesn’t have any data caps for you to worry about, nor does it log any of the traffic you send or receive over its connection. That’s all good stuff for folks keen to use their VPN to the max without worrying about their privacy.

IPVanish also boasts 24/7 support for those times when something isn’t quite right, and with multiple connection protocols on offer, you’ll always be able to get the best connection, no matter your device. Apps are available for Windows PCs, Macs, iPhones, Android phones and more. You can even use IPVanish with your Apple TV and Fire TV devices, too.

  • Upgrading to iOS 17? You’ll Want to Back Up Your Device Before Updating

Upgrading to iOS 17? You’ll Want to Back Up Your Device Before Updating

With the iOS 17 update release and the temptation to upgrade to the new iPhone 15 or 15 Plus (or even the iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max), it’s probably a good idea to consider backing up your iPhone. Maybe you want to try out the cool new features from the software upgrade, or maybe you’re taking precautions in case your iPhone is lost or stolen. Whatever the reason, taking a few minutes to safeguard valuable memories like photos, videos and text messages can spare you a future regret. Even better, there’s several ways you can do it.

The easiest way to back up your iPhone is through iCloud, but Apple’s online service does have its limits. You might see the dreaded “not enough iCloud storage” error message, which won’t allow you to back up, but don’t fret.

I’ll also walk you through backing up your iPhone to iCloud to both Mac and Windows, which don’t require cloud storage. And I’ll even show you how to troubleshoot and work around some of iCloud’s limits.

For more, check out this checklist of things you should do before updating to iOS 17 before it drops today. (Spoiler: Backing up is definitely one of them.)

iCloud: When everything works like it’s supposed to

iCloud is a free service (more on that later) that’s tied to your Apple ID and that you can use to back up your iPhone. However, it doesn’t back up everything on your phone. Things you buy with your Apple ID, such as apps or music, won’t back up because Apple has a receipt that you already bought them so you can download them again for free. Email, contacts and calendars are usually synced with your email account like Gmail, but in some cases, you might also sync these things with iCloud.

You can double-check all this by going to Settings and then going into either Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Notes or Reminders. In any of these settings, you can tap Accounts to view your various accounts. Under each account, you can see what’s being synced: mail, contacts, calendars and so on.

To start a backup to iCloud, connect your iPhone to Wi-Fi and then go to Settings and tap the Apple ID/iCloud tab at the top, which also has your name. If you’re not signed in, take a moment to do so and then tap iCloud. On the next page, scroll down and tap iCloud Backup, enable iCloud Backup, and then tap Back Up Now to start.

screenshots showing steps to back up your iPhone using iCloud

Depending on how much data you have, or if this is your first time backing up to iCloud, the backup process could take a few minutes or an hour. Check below the Back Up Now button to see the exact time and date your phone was last backed up. Now, any time your iPhone is connected to power, locked and on Wi-Fi, it will automatically back up whatever new data you have to iCloud.

‘This iPhone cannot be backed up because there is not enough iCloud storage’

If that iCloud backup worked just fine, then great, you’re done. But I realize a lot of people won’t be able to back up to iCloud without a little work. You might see this message on your iOS device: “This iPhone cannot be backed up because there is not enough iCloud storage available.”

Every iCloud account gets 5GB for free. But most people have more than 5GB of data on their phone — or they have more than one iOS device that needs backing up. Hence, 5GB just isn’t enough space. And maybe one day Apple will change its free tier to give us more data and make backing up easier for everyone. But until then, we need to do some calculations to optimize our iCloud accounts.

    Figure out iCloud backup size

As I mentioned earlier, iCloud doesn’t back up every last thing on your phone. Instead, it takes a smart approach and won’t back up things that are synced with your internet accounts or that you’ve purchased with your iTunes Apple ID. To figure out exactly how much iCloud space your backup file will take, go to Settings, tap on your Apple ID and then go to iCloud > Manage Account Storage > Backups. There’s a list of devices that are backing up or trying to back up with your account.

By the way, if you see multiple backups of the same phone, take a look at how old each one is. You might have an older iPhone backup that you can delete to open up iCloud space. Once you’re done purging this list, tap on the name of the device you’re currently using.

Give your phone a few moments to figure things out, then look at the top of the screen. You should see the following details: Last Backup, Backup Size and Next Backup Size. If you haven’t backed up your iPhone to iCloud before or in a long time, the Next Backup Size will be a pretty large amount of data. Obviously, if it’s more than 5GB, you must either buy more storage or adjust what you’re backing up.

Change what gets backed up to iCloud

Lower on the screen under Next Backup Size is a list where you can Choose Data to Back Up. This list will have apps and how much data each has to back up. The list goes from what takes up the most space to the least. If you just need a slightly smaller backup file, uncheck larger data items from the list if you don’t mind whether or not they’re backed up.

If all you wanted to back up was your camera roll, the only setting you’d need to toggle would be iCloud Photos. Besides Photos, there is a list of every other iCloud-enabled app on your iPhone, starting with Apple’s own apps. Besides Photos, the two biggest data hogs using your iCloud storage tend to be Mail and Messages. If you turn off the iCloud backup settings for these two apps however, old messages won’t be restored in case you get a new phone.

Buy more iCloud storage with iCloud Plus

This is the part no one likes to do, but Apple does offer four price tiers for storage: the free 5GB, $1-per-month 50GB, $3-per-month 200GB or $10-per-month 2TB plans. For even more space, iCloud Plus is getting two more options that gives you the option to buy 6TB or 12TB storage plans for $30 per month and $60 per month, respectively. (Note, Apple doesn’t have annual pricing.)

I realize that the idea of paying Apple more money on top of what we already spend on devices, accessories and AppleCare may not sit well. But if you lost your iPhone and were told you could download a backup of all of the data from your lost phone for just $36, you’d probably say yes. And that’s how much the 200GB extra storage plan on iCloud costs for a year. (If you need more space than that, well, it does get a bit spendier.)

17 Hidden iOS 17 Features and Settings on Your iPhone

    See all photos

    Use your Mac

A few years ago, with the release of MacOS Catalina, Apple replaced and fragmented iTunes, which used to be how you backed up your iPhone. Now, you must use Finder, but the process to back up your phone is still as simple as ever.

On your Mac, open a Finder window from the Dock. Next, select your device from the sidebar under Devices. Then on the right-hand side click on the General tab. Finally, click Back Up Now. Depending on how much data you have, this could take a while.

    Use your Windows

If you’re on Windows, good ol’ iTunes is still alive and kicking (you can download it here), and you can use it to back up your iPhone. According to Apple, all you have to do is plug your iPhone into your computer, give your devices permission to talk to each other and then click on the small iPhone icon on the top left side of the iTunes window.

Click Summary and then scroll down to the Backup section, and under the Backup section click Back Up now. After some time, your computer will have a backup file of your iPhone. To double-check the file, go to the iTunes menu, select Edits, then Preferences and then choose the Devices tab. From there, you can see a list of any iPhone backups that you’ve made via iTunes.

Keep in mind that your backup is only as current as the last time you ran the process. Also, your backup file is only as safe as your computer is.

  • Installing iOS 17? Check Out These Steps First

Installing iOS 17? Check Out These Steps First

Along with the new iPhone 15 series and Apple Watch 9, September’s Apple event brought us the release of iOS 17, the latest version of the iPhone’s operating system. The latest version of iOS contains major updates to apps like Messages, Maps and Siri, while adding new features like StandBy Mode and NameDrop.

Read more: 7 Hidden Features of iOS 17 That You Shouldn’t Miss

iOS 17 has been out for several weeks, but if you didn’t update right after it hit your phone, it’s never too late to try it out. Before you think about doing that though, there are a few things to know. Read on to learn everything you should do before installing iOS 17 on your iPhone.

To learn more about iOS 17, check out all the best features on iOS 17 and whether or not your iPhone supports iOS 17.

First, is your iPhone even compatible with iOS 17?

As long as you own an iPhone XS or later, you should be able to download iOS 17. Below is a full list of every iPhone compatible with Apple’s new software update. And if your current phone isn’t on the list, here are some more recent iPhone models to consider purchasing.

The iPhone 15 series, Apple’s latest phones, comes with iOS 17 already installed, so you won’t have to do any updating.

Next, make sure your iPhone is fully updated

Before you update to iOS 17, make sure you’re updated to the latest iOS 16 version so that you don’t encounter any issues if you decide to revert. Also, it’s just good to always be updated to the newest mobile software version in case there are major bugs or other issues in older iOS versions.

To update your iPhone to the latest version iOS 16, go to Settings > General > Software Update and check for any available updates.

Now, back up your iPhone before installing iOS 17

This is important: Even though iOS 17 has been out for a couple of weeks, updating your phone can still put it in jeopardy. You could potentially lose pictures, text messages, app data and other treasured memories you’ve stored on your phone. However, you can protect against the risk of losing data when you update.

The best way to protect your info is to back up your iPhone while it’s still running iOS 16. The reason is that if you update to iOS 17 but then decide to go back to iOS 16, you have an up-to-date backup to revert to, so that you keep your most recent photos, text messages, app data and more.

Now, there are two ways to back up your iPhone: via iCloud and your computer.

Back up your iPhone with iCloud

Your iPhone should automatically back up by default once a day, as long as your device is connected to both a power source and Wi-Fi and locked.

To check if this feature is enabled, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud Backup and make sure that Back Up This iPhone is enabled. Also, if you have a compatible 5G iPhone, including the iPhone 12, iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 models, you can enable Back Up Over Cellular to have your iPhone back up over your cellular network when you’re not connected to W-Fi.

You can also just manually back up your iPhone with iCloud. In the same iCloud Backup page, simply tap Back Up Now. Underneath that, you’ll see the last time a successful backup was created. Under All Device Backups, you can check out more information about your backups, including backup size, and customize what is backed up.

Using iCloud Backup on your iPhone

Back up your iPhone with Mac or Windows

If you don’t have storage on your iPhone or iCloud, you always have the option to back up your device via your computer.

On Mac, connect your iPhone to your computer via lightning cable, open Finder and select your iPhone. Next, check the circle next to Back up all of the data on your iPhone to this Mac and then hit Back Up Now.

Backing up your iPhone on your Mac

The process with Windows is pretty similar. Again, connect your iPhone to your computer via cable, but this time open the iTunes app and click the iPhone button on the top-left of the window. In the Summary page, click Back Up Now to back up your iPhone to your Windows PC.
