Bot and Ernie: Everything You Need to Know About China’s ChatGPT Equivalent

At a developer conference in Shenzhen, China, this week, tech company Baidu announced its Ernie chatbot has amassed 200 million users in eight months.

While this is a fraction of China’s population, Nicole Greene, a VP analyst at research firm Gartner, noted Ernie fills a market gap due to government restrictions.

While US consumers have had access to generative AI since November 2022, tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot aren’t available in China. As a result, homegrown tech companies like Baidu are eager to capitalize on the opportunity to serve an unmet need — and, like US companies, they are eager to tout advancements.

Jason Alan Snyder, global CTO of Momentum Worldwide, called Ernie “a major milestone in Chinese AI development … [which] demonstrates the country’s commitment to rivaling Western tech giants in the generative AI race.”

If this is the first you’ve heard of Ernie, this explainer is for you. Here’s everything you need to know about the Chinese AI tool.

    What is Ernie?

Ernie Bot is a large language model and generative AI tool. Like ChatGPT, users interact via text to create content. But instead of English, Ernie understands Chinese — and, according to Baidu, its responses “[approach] human level.”

In a blog post, Baidu said Ernie is capable of multi-modal generation, which means it can create different types of content like text and visuals. This includes both literary and business writing, as well as mathematical calculations. (It can also create a variety of Thanksgiving turkey images.)

Read more: AI Atlas: Your Guide to Today’s Artificial Intelligence

Why did Baidu name this bot Ernie?

Ernie stands for Enhanced Representation through Knowledge Integration.

    How do you use Ernie?

To access Ernie, users can visit Baidu’s website or download the bot from app stores.

They must create an account and be logged in to make queries. Users outside China can access Ernie. However, in order to sign up for an account, you must provide an ID number from a Chinese resident identity card.

How long has Ernie been available?

Baidu launched Ernie in March 2023.

However, it wasn’t publicly available until August 2023. Reports say that’s when Chinese regulators gave Baidu approval for rollout. (Baidu didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.)

    Who are Ernie’s competitors?

Alibaba has a large language model called Tongyi Qianwen, which debuted in April 2023. AI platform SenseTime released its SenseChat chatbot the same month, while TikTok owner ByteDance was reportedly testing a chatbot code-named Grace in June 2023, and WeChat owner Tencent announced its Hunyuan chatbot in September 2023.

ByteDance didn’t respond to a request for comment.

    What is Ernie’s latest version?

Ernie 4.0 was released in October 2023.

Baidu CEO Robin Li noted Ernie 4.0 can better understand complex requests and generate text, images and videos.

Baidu announced Ernie 3.5 four months earlier, which the tech company said included improvements in writing, reasoning and code generation, as well as in its ability to make inferences.

Like many US chatbot models, Ernie 3.5 is reportedly free for the public to use, while Ernie 4.0 is accessible via a subscription.

How does Ernie compare to US chatbots?

While functionality and access are similar, Baidu said Ernie 3.5 can beat GPT-4 in multiple Chinese language capabilities.

While we don’t necessarily have an apples-to-apples comparison for reach, Baidu said Ernie has 200 million users. In November 2023, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said ChatGPT had 100 million weekly users.

What are the risks associated with Ernie?

Ernie faces the same challenges as US chatbots, including hallucinations, as well as security, privacy and copyright violations, along with ethical and bias concerns and deepfakes.

But chatbots in China face the additional challenge of government censorship, which experts say can make the problem of chatbot bias even worse.

Watch Europa League Soccer: Livestream West Ham vs. Bayer Leverkusen From Anywhere

West Ham have it all to do on Thursday as they host Bayer Leverkusen in the second leg of this UEFA Europa League quarterfinal at the London Stadium.

Despite a disciplined defensive display in the opening encounter in Germany last week, the Hammers slipped to a 2-0 defeat, leaving them with the challenging task of beating a side that has yet to suffer a defeat in any competition this season.

The hosts will be without suspended pair Lucas Paquetá and Emerson Palmieri, but could be boosted by the return of top scorer Jarrod Bowen.

Bayer Leverkusen secured the first Bundesliga title in their history at the weekend, and Xabi Alonso will be determined to ensure his side don’t suffer any hangover from that triumph, as they go in search of another piece of silverware.

Below, we’ll outline the best live TV streaming services to use to watch every game live wherever you are in the world.

If you find yourself unable to view Europa League matches locally, you may need a different way to watch the action — that’s where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds on game day by encrypting your traffic, and it’s also a great idea if you’re traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you’re able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the game. So if your internet provider or mobile carrier has stuck you with an IP address that incorrectly shows your location in a blackout zone, a VPN can correct that problem by giving you an IP address in your correct, nonblackout area. Most VPNs, like our Editors’ Choice, ExpressVPN, make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you’re streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

Quick tips for streaming UEFA Europa League matches using a VPN

    • With four variables at play — your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN — your experience and success when streaming Europa League games may vary.
    • If you don’t see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the “search for city or country” option.
    • If you’re having trouble getting the game after you’ve turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs — like Roku — don’t have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you’ll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you’re using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
    • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network’s sports app, you’ll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
    • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you’re using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend Brave.

Benfica head to southern France on Thursday holding a slender 2-1 advantage over Marseille, ahead of what looks set to be an entertaining second leg of this UEFA Europa League quarterfinal.

Rafa Silva gave Benfica the lead in last week’s first leg, before Argentinian veteran Angel di Maria doubled their advantage. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s 67th-minute strike, however, will have given Marseille hope of turning the tie around at home today in the intimidating confines of the Stade Vélodrome.

Ismaila Sarr, Jonathan Clauss look likely to miss out for the hosts, with both players suffering from hamstring injuries, while left-back Juan Bernat is rated as doubtful for Benfica for today’s game.

Aston Villa hold a narrow 2-1 lead as they head to northern France to take on Lille in the second leg of this Europa Conference League quarterfinal.

Goals from Ollie Watkins and John McGinn gave Villa a flying start in the opening encounter. But Bafodé Diakité flicked in a header from Angel Gomes’ cross with just six minutes remaining, earning Lille a potentially crucial goal going into this decisive second leg.

Lille have the advantage of having had a weekend off from domestic Ligue 1 action. Gomes, a former England Under-21 and Man United forward, is likely to have fully recovered from the hamstring injury that restricted him to a brief cameo in the first leg.

Villa boss Unai Emery’s defensive selection options have been boosted by the return of Clément Lenglet and Matty Cash, meanwhile.

Now you can find out if you have what it takes to keep your people safe and fed when the seasons change and the harsh winters approach.

    Have a Nice Death

    Available: April 30

Even Death needs a break every now and then, and that’s the goal of this roguelike game. You play as Death, the CEO of Death Incorporated, who finds himself needing a restful vacation. The only thing standing in your way from a relaxing stay at the beach — or wherever Death would vacation — is a mountain of paperwork and reminding your demonic subordinates who’s in charge. Just another day at the office.

Games coming to Game Pass Core

Game Pass Core ($10 a month) is the cheapest Game Pass subscription, and it’s a good option if you only want to play certain games online. It also gives you access to a handful of games, and on April 23, Game Pass Core subscribers can access these titles, too:

    Titles leaving Game Pass

While Xbox is adding the above titles to Game Pass Ultimate, it’s also removing six titles on April 30. So, you have some time to finish any side quests before you have to buy these titles separately:

For more on Xbox, here’s what Diablo 4 on Game Pass likely means for the service, other titles available on Game Pass Ultimate now and everything to know about the gaming service.

Amazon Just Knocked $30 Off Some of Our Favorite Wireless Earbuds for Running

Fitness enthusiasts know all too well how difficult it can be to find wireless earbuds that stay put during exercise. The Shokz OpenFit earbuds are some of our favorite running earbuds and are perfect for those who lead an active lifestyle. What’s more, if you order from Amazon today you’ll get them at their best-yet price of just $150. That price represents a $30 saving off the original asking price, but it’s a limited-time deal which means that it might not be here for long. On a more positive note, the deal is available on both the black and beige versions so be sure to pick your favorite before adding them to your cart.

Because the Shokz OpenFit are earbuds with ear hooks they’re more likely to stay secured when performing strenuous activity. They also have an IP54 rating, so they’ll handle sweat, dust and the elements in general, but don’t plan to go swimming with them. It’s also worth mentioning that the controls are touch-based, which might be frustrating for some who prefer the more tactile feel of a button.

Beyond that, the audio fidelity is surprisingly good, and the app even lets you fiddle around with the EQ so you can set it just right, but note that there’s no noise cancelation. The OpenFit features an open design that fires sound into your ears using what Shokz dubs “air conduction” technology. Being open-ear, you still have an awareness of your surroundings which is handy when pounding pavements or lifting weights in the gym.

As for battery life, you can get up to seven hours on the earbuds plus another 21 hours or so in the charging case, giving you a total of 28 hours. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have wireless charging, but you can get an hour’s worth of battery with a five-minute charge, so even if you’re in a hurry, you can get some battery life out of it. The case charges via USB-C.

All in all, it’s a solid set of earbuds if you’re looking for something for your workouts. That said, if you’d like a few more options, be sure to check out these other great earbud deals.

Huawei Debuts New Pura 70 Phones in Fresh Revival Attempt

Huawei’s new flagship Pura 70 series has a sleek and stylish design as well as multiple rear cameras. The company launched the new line in China on Thursday, in a bid to revive its smartphone business that has suffered due to US sanctions.

The Pura 70 line appears to be a rebrand of Huawei’s P phone series, which were also notable for their rear cameras. The Pura 70 has four models running from 5,499 yuan (roughly $760) for the base Pura 70 all the way up to 9,999 yuan (roughly $1,380) for the 70 Ultra.

Huawei quietly launched its Mate 60 series last year, The Mate 60 runs on the company’s in-house Kirin 9000 processor, which enables 5G connectivity. The Kirin 9000 surpassed people’s expectations of Chinese chipmakers at the time. It’s not clear at the time of writing what processor the Pura 70 or 70 Ultra is using.

Since 2019, Huawei’s been grappling with US sanctions that aim to restrict the Chinese company’s access to American technology. Huawei eventually lost access to critical global components required to make state-of-the-art processors for its smartphones, among other products. This lead Huawei to release outdated 4G phones such as 2023’s Mate X3 at a time when 5G phones had already hit the mainstream.

The Mate 60 series, launched in August 2023, is credited with driving up Huawei’s phone sales. In the first six weeks of 2024, Huawei witnessed a surge in phone sales per unit by 64% compared to the previous year, according to research firm Counterpoint. In that same timeframe, Apple’s iPhone sales in China experienced a decline of 24%.

The Pura 70 series appears to be a rebrand from Huawei’s high-end P series. It targets people who care about aesthetics and photography, while the Mate series focuses on pixels and processors.

The Pura 70 series runs on HarmonyOS, Huawei’s self-developed operating system. It was released in 2019 after US sanctions meant the company’s phones lost access to Google Managed Services, which includes Google Maps, Gmail and the Google Play Store.

Huawei’s phone business has shown signs of recovery, but it doesn’t seem to be back to where it was before US sanctions. The Shenzen-based company has survived and even grows in some areas. It posted a net profit for the year of 2023 of 87 billion year, which rose by 144.5% from the year before. In fact, 2023 represented Huawei’s third year straight of revenue growth, but revenue remains below its 2020 peak.

The US has long alleged that Huawei maintains a tight relationship with the Chinese government and that equipment from the company could be used to spy on other countries and companies. Huawei has repeatedly denied this.
