Get In on the October Prime Day Action: Sign Up for Amazon Prime and Save Big

Amazon’s Big Deal Days, which is essentially Amazon’s October Prime Day event, is coming on Oct. 10 and Oct. 11, just in time to start your winter holiday shopping. These big shopping events usually see some of the online retailer’s best deals of the year on products, and you can already find some early deals to take advantage of right now.

If you’re looking to save big ahead of the holidays, now might be a good time to go ahead and take the plunge on a Prime membership, which you’ll need if you want to advantage of Prime Day deals. A standard Prime membership will run you $139 a year, or $15 a month. If you’re a student, you can get a Prime membership for $69 a year, or $8 a month, and if you qualify for government assistance programs the monthly subscription price drops to $7.

You won’t just get free shipping with your Prime membership. With your subscription you’ll also receive access to Amazon Prime Video, Amazon Music Prime, discounts at Whole Foods and on Amazon Alexa products, and even more perks.

Prime Days usually see big deals on tech (think phones, tablets and smartwatches) and home products (like air fryers and espresso machines). So, if you think a Prime membership is right for you, read on and we will walk you through signing up for an Amazon Prime account. If you’re still on the fence, no worries, you can still sign up for Prime’s 30-Day free trial.

For more, Amazon’s Layaway program could be an ace up your sleeve for big ticket items next week.

How to sign up for Amazon Prime

To take advantage of Prime Day deals, you’ll want to be a Prime member. To sign up for your Amazon Prime account, all you’ll need to do is:

    1. Navigate to www.amazon.com/amazonprime

    2. Tap the rectangular orange box that says Start Your 30-Day Trial.

    3. If you only already have an Amazon account, you can go ahead and sign-in. If you don’t have an Amazon account, tap Create Account. You will be prompted to enter your name, email address and password. Amazon will require you to verify your email address with a one-time password.

    4. Select your payment method — which can be a credit card, debit card, gift card or whatever other payment method you choose — and add that information. Then click Continue.

And that’s it! You are now officially a prime subscriber.

How to cancel your Prime membership

If you decide that a Prime membership is no longer right for you, or if you want to cancel before your 30-day free trial ends, ending your membership is pretty easy too.

    1. Sign into your Amazon account, and tap the Account & Lists dropdown menu.

    2. Then select Prime Membership in the Your Account column.

    3. Next, under the Manage membership heading, tap Update, cancel and more.

    4. Then, simply select End Membership.

If you don’t want to follow these steps, you can also go to and jump directly to the End Membership button. Either way, after selecting End Membership you will no longer be subscribed to Amazon Prime.

  • Amazon Layaway Could Be the Ace Up Your Shopping Sleeve During October’s Prime Day Event

October Prime Day is days away, and you can already find early deals now. If you’re a frequent Amazon Prime shopper, you might’ve heard about , which is Amazon Prime’s layaway program. If you’re curious about Amazon layaway and wondering if it’s the right fit for you, we’ve got you covered.

Amazon Layaway could be useful if you’re making a big purchase or you’re waiting for payday to arrive before shelling out all at once for something you want to buy. This isn’t the same as Amazon’s Affirm payment plan, which lets you buy now and pay later — we’ll explain below.

Keep reading to find out more about how to use Amazon Layaway. And check out these Amazon Prime benefits, as well as how to sign up for Amazon Prime.

Read more: Buy Now, Pay Later vs. Credit Cards: Which Is Right for You?

    How to use Amazon Layaway

If an item you’re looking at is eligible for layaway, you’ll see a tag that says Reserve with Layaway — you may also see this when you add it to your cart. If you don’t see it, your item likely isn’t eligible for layaway.

Once you add all eligible items to your cart, select Reserve with Layaway at checkout next to each item you’d like to place on layaway. If you’re using Amazon Layaway you will not have to have your credit checked, so you won’t need to worry about this program affecting your credit.

Currently, Amazon’s layaway program isn’t available for orders shipping to Connecticut; Illinois; Maryland; Ohio; Pennsylvania; Washington, DC, or outside of the US.

    How does Amazon Layaway work?

Amazon divides up the total price of the product you’re buying into five payments — this does not include tax and shipping. You’ll pay 20% upfront and make four additional 20% payments on the scheduled dates Amazon assigns. Your bill will come due every two weeks, for a total of eight weeks. Taxes and shipping costs will be included with your final payment so it’ll be a bit more than the other payments.

When you make the first payment, Amazon reserves your item until it’s paid off. Once you pay it off, Amazon will ship the item to you. You won’t be charged interest while making payments, as you’re not financing your order.

What if I forget to make a payment?

If you forget to make one of your scheduled payments, Amazon will send you an email letting you know your payment attempt was unsuccessful. If you don’t make the payment before the next scheduled date, Amazon will cancel your layaway plan and refund you all the money you’ve paid so far.

You won’t be charged any fees for overdue or canceled layaway plans. Also, if you have an overdue layaway plan, you won’t be able to start a new layaway plan.

If you decide to pay the balance in full ahead of time, log in to your Amazon account and go to My Orders > Order Details > Manage Payment Plans, and then click on Pay early.

How is this different from Amazon’s Affirm payment plan?

Using Amazon Layaway has no additional fees: Your only charges are for the product and any shipping costs and taxes. The Affirm payment plan lets you buy now and pay later, but you get your items immediately. This is because it finances your order, which means you’ll have to go through a credit approval process first.

However, with Affirm, if you miss a payment, it could potentially harm your credit score since Affirm reports some payments, positive and negative, to the credit bureaus. Plus, it could come with interest, causing you to pay more in the long run — Affirm payment options can range anywhere from six weeks to 60 months, and some may also be interest-free.

If you can wait eight weeks for the items you’ve ordered to be delivered, we recommend going with the layaway plan and avoiding buy now, pay later programs.

  • Save $70 on These Ausounds Noise-Canceling In-Ear Headphones

Save $70 on These Ausounds Noise-Canceling In-Ear Headphones

Earlier versions of the Ausounds AU-Stream were billed as competitors to the AirPods, and while the most recent generation of the AU-Stream haven’t reached those heights, they are a great budget alternative. In fact, for a discounted price of $30 from B&H Photo, they’re a surprisingly great pair of earbuds to grab if you don’t want to spend a ton of money.

While they don’t quite make our list of the best noise-canceling earbuds, they still manage to do quite well with the low frequencies, while higher frequencies are handled by the passive noise canceling of the ear tips. You will hear a bit of hiss from the ANC, which is pretty common with budget earbuds and headphones, but it’s not noticeable unless you’re in a quiet room. Thankfully, it doesn’t impact audio fidelity, so you’re fine on that front.

Speaking of audio fidelity, the earbuds do pretty well with lower frequencies and don’t have too many issues in the higher frequencies. They have a solid battery life of about five to six hours, with another 15 hours or so in the case, so you essentially get a whole day’s worth of use. The call audio is pretty good, too, with both sides able to hear each other clearly, so if you make many calls, you’re all set.

While the AU-Stream can’t compete with higher-end earphones, they’re a great option for keeping costs down. That said, If you want something a bit better, you can check out these earbuds and headphone deals for alternatives.

  • Can You Return That Prime Day Gift After Christmas? Return Policies for Amazon and More

Can You Return That Prime Day Gift After Christmas? Return Policies for Amazon and More

We’re now in October, and that means the holiday season is just around the corner. With that in mind, several big sales are coming up, including Amazon’s October Prime Day and Black Friday. If you’re planning to buy gifts during these huge sales events, you’ll likely need to know what the return policy is just in case the items don’t work out.

See below for the return windows and policies for major retail stores Amazon, Walmart, Target, Best Buy and Macy’s. For more shopping tips, here’s how to get $30 ahead of October Prime Day. Also, here’s how to get shipping costs cut at these chain retailers.

    Amazon returns

When you make a purchase on Amazon — even Amazon Warehouse — you’ve got 30 days to return the items. That’s not a lot of time if you’re buying gifts that you intend to give during the holidays. My suggestion? Open the item you’ve purchased to check that it has all the parts and pieces, and to make sure it’s what you’re after. If not, box it back up and ship it back as soon as possible.

If you do keep the item that you plan to gift past 30 days and the recipient finds that it doesn’t work for them, they can still get a refund for up to 80% of the total price on an Amazon gift card. They can also choose to exchange the item — for instance, if it’s the wrong size or color.

Note that some Amazon sellers may have different return policies.

    Walmart returns

If you buy something from Walmart (online or in-store), you typically have a 90-day window to return it. However, Walmart does offer extended holiday returns for items purchased between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31 that give you until Jan. 31, 2024, to return the item. So if you buy something as a gift during one of its sales events, you or the person receiving it will have time to return or exchange the item.

    Target deals graphic

    Target returns

If you buy something at Target and decide you’d like to return it, you have 90 days to do so. And if you have Target’s credit card, RedCard, you have 120 days to make the return. If you’re returning a Target brand item or something from your registry, Target gives you a full year.

Similar to Walmart, Target also has an extended holiday return policy. Here’s how it works:

For all electronics and entertainment items (excluding Apple products) purchased between Oct. 1 and Dec. 24, the 30-day refund period will start on Dec. 26 and must be returned by Jan. 24, 2024.

For Apple products (excluding iPhones) purchased between Oct. 1 and Dec. 24, the 15-day refund period will start on Dec. 26 and must be returned by Jan. 9, 2024.

For mobile phones purchased in-store or online as a pick up order between Oct. 1 and Dec. 24, the 14-day refund window starts on Dec. 26 and must be returned by Jan. 8, 2024.

    Best Buy returns

Best Buy gives you 15 days to return items you’ve purchased, and 14 days if it’s an activatable device like a phone or tablet. However, if you’re a My Best Buy Plus or My Best Buy Total member, you have 60 days to return anything you’ve purchased, excluding activatable devices.

If you’re returning a gift you received, you’ll get store credit for the purchase price if you return it in a store. If you return the gift by mail, the gift buyer will get the credit.

If Best Buy follows last year’s holiday return policy, items purchased between Oct. 24 and Dec. 31 have until Jan. 14 to be returned.

    Macy’s returns

Any item purchased from Macy’s must be returned within 30 days. If it’s an item from a gift registry, you have 90 days from the event date to return it.

If Macy’s follows last year’s holiday return policy, items purchased Oct. 3 and later have a 90-day return window. This policy would end Jan. 31, 2024.

The story is based on 1964’s Astro Boy: The Greatest Robot on Earth, and introduces a setting where humans and robots coexist. Things turn dark, however, and the robot detective Gesicht investigates the murders of powerful robots and human lawmakers.

According to Netflix’s official synopsis, “As Gesicht investigates, he meets the highly advanced robot Atom, whose emotions and AI leave him questioning his own identity. Together, they uncover a dark plot that could spell the end of the world as they know it. But with the clock ticking, can they stop the greatest evil in history before it’s too late?”

Pluto premieres Oct. 26 on Netflix.
