  • Samsung Galaxy S24 Wish List: More AI, Faster Charging

Samsung Galaxy S24 Wish List: More AI, Faster Charging

Samsung focused on practical upgrades in the Galaxy S23, like longer battery life, adding more base storage to the pricier models and bringing a sharper camera sensor to the Ultra model. But the Galaxy S24 may be more than just a hardware refresh if Samsung’s Galaxy AI features end up being worthwhile.

That said, flashy new AI capabilities alone aren’t enough to make a smartphone worth recommending. Basics like battery life, screen quality and camera performance still matter more when it comes to general usability. But as generative AI becomes a bigger part of the apps and services we use everyday, that could change.

Read more: Best Android Phone of 2023

Here’s a look at what I’m hoping to see from the Galaxy S24, which is expected to launch early next year.

    Useful AI features

A screenshot showing what the chat interface for Bixby Text Call looks like for the recipient.

Samsung may not have been as vocal about its AI ambitions in 2023 as companies like Google, Meta and Microsoft. But it’s clearly been thinking about how the technology can potentially improve the way we use our phones. Bixby Text Call, which combines the experience of a text message and a phone call for times when it may not be ideal to answer the phone verbally, is an example of that.

But based on Samsung’s recent announcements, it sounds like AI will be front and center in the Galaxy S24 series, similar to Google’s approach with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. Samsung recently announced Gauss, a new generative AI model that spans language, images and code, and Galaxy AI, an “experience” likely coming to the S24. Details on Gauss and Galaxy AI are scarce. So far, Samsung has said Gauss will be able to handle tasks like composing emails and summarizing documents, while Galaxy AI can translate phone calls.

There’s also an opportunity for AI to expand S Pen functionality on the next Ultra model. For instance, I could imagine AI being used to improve handwriting recognition or to enable new features that let you merge hand-drawn sketches with AI-generated art. But that’s just my own speculation; we’ll have to wait to see what Samsung has in store.

One of my biggest criticisms of Samsung’s smartphone software is that it lacks the additional handy features you get with Pixel phones, like Google Recorder for transcribing recordings in real time and Google’s suite of phone call assistance features and photo editing tools. Generative AI could be just what Samsung needs to catch up. The trick, however, is that these features will have to walk a fine line between being useful without going overboard. As my colleague Sareena Dayaram has written in the past, some of the Pixel 8’s new image editing features raise big questions about the authenticity of images we encounter online.

    Faster charging

    Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

The Galaxy S23 lineup offers the same charging speeds as the phones’ predecessors: You get 25-watt charging on the regular S23 and 45 watts on the Plus and Ultra variants.

This lags behind some competing phones. The Lenovo ThinkPhone, for example, offers 68-watt charging that can take it from empty to 92% in 30 minutes. The Motorola Edge Plus, which also has 68-watt charging, replenished its battery from 3% to 80% in 30 minutes during CNET’s testing. Both of those beat the Galaxy S23 Plus’ 45-watt charging, which only 11% to 72% in the same amount of time.

While faster charging isn’t a deal breaker, it’s a practical upgrade that would make the S24 appealing to those who find themselves with only a few minutes to power up their devices.

More storage in the base Galaxy S24

    Samsung's Galaxy S23

Given all the apps, photos and videos we store on our devices, it’s easy to run out of space. Most phone makers stopped including a microSD card slot that allows you to add extra space as you need it a long time ago, meaning you now have to rely on your phone’s built-in storage and the cloud.

Samsung increased the amount of storage in the cheapest version of the Galaxy S23 Plus and Ultra from 128GB up to 256GB, but the regular S23 still only includes 128GB of space. It would be great to see Samsung upgrade the base S24’s storage capacity to match the rest of the lineup moving forward. Doing so would also help the S24 further compete against Google’s Pixel 8 lineup and provide another differentiating factor that separates it from the $600 Galaxy S23 FE.

    More years of Android updates

green android symbol against yellow backdrop

Samsung was the leader when it came to Android version support for flagship phones, but Google recently surpassed it. While Samsung guarantees four generations of Android version updates, Google’s Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will get seven years of software updates. That’s a big deal because it means Pixel 8 owners will continue to get major platform-wide updates until 2030. I’m hoping this motivates Samsung to at least match Google, especially since Samsung’s premium phones usually cost $1,000 or more.

Overall, the ideal smartphone upgrade includes a combination of practical improvements — like better battery life or faster charging — and new features that make it feel meaningfully different from its predecessor. When it comes to the Galaxy S24, I’d like to see that manifest in storage and charging upgrades along with creative AI-powered tools that are helpful rather than gimmicky.

    What to Consider

    Price

To access 4K, expect to pay anywhere from $8 per month to $20 per month (excluding account-sharing fees). Consider whether the catalog size is worth the cost and choose a streaming service that lines up with your budget and content tastes.

    Library

Not every streaming service has all the titles you want in 4K, so review each one’s catalog to make sure there’s enough you want to watch. This can include TV shows, exclusive originals, newly released feature films or older movies.

    Device capabilities

One of the first things you need to check is your device’s abilities to stream in 4K. Smart TVs, and streaming media players like Roku Express 4K+, Amazon’s Fire TV Stick 4K and Apple TV 4K make it easy to watch in UHD. Double check that your device is supported by your streaming service.

What’s the best streaming service for 4K overall?

We chose Netflix as our top pick due to its extensive collection of 4K content. Although there is an additional cost for streaming it, the platform’s original content, user-friendly interface, optimized features and regularly updated catalog help it stand out from the competition. Max and Apple TV Plus come with their own advantages, but each service has limitations compared to Netflix.
There are other high-quality streaming services that offer 4K so even though Netflix is currently our first choice, it may not align with your budget or preferences. And, you may opt to buy Blu-ray discs to see 4K-resolution video. But a streaming service is the most convenient way to go. Here’s a look at the top streaming services for 4K content.

    See at Netflix

    Best overall for 4K

    Netflix

Netflix has one of the largest 4K libraries among the streamers, with more than 1,200 titles available in the US alone. However, you must have its highest-priced subscription at $20 a month to access any of it. Most Netflix originals are available in 4K UHD, as the company began requiring that original productions be shot in the format in 2014. Non-originals like Seinfeld, Minions: The Rise of Gru and Groundhog Day are also streaming in 4K.

In addition to the platform’s vast lineup, the premium plan also offers Dolby Atmos, spatial audio and four simultaneous streams. Look for the Ultra HD icon in the description or search for 4K content by typing “4K” or “Ultra HD” in the search bar. Pro tip: If you’re watching a 4K title on Netflix that doesn’t seem to be streaming in the correct resolution, check the app’s playback settings to make sure it’s set to “high.”

    See at Disney Plus

    Best budget-friendly streamer with 4K

    Disney Plus

Disney Plus has a varied selection of 4K movies and TV shows, with about 600 titles available globally in the UHD format. The best part? It’s offered for all subscription plans at no extra cost as long as you have a supported device. You can watch Marvel hits like Ironman or Guardians of the Galaxy, Pixar films, Star Wars titles and more.

Find content by looking for the 4K UHD badge in the title’s description. For the movies menu, there’s a designated filter for 4K content. Note that Disney Plus says content will automatically stream in the highest video quality your device supports, so be sure your TV or media player is compatible.

    See at YouTube TV

Best live TV service with 4K

    YouTube TV

YouTube TV offers the most 4K action out of the major live TV streaming services, which includes live and on-demand programming. A subscription costs $73 monthly, but you have to pay an extra $10 per month for the 4K Plus add-on option. With it, you’ll receive unlimited simultaneous streams in your house and access to UHD content from these networks:

    • Discovery
    • ESPN
    • FOX Sports
    • FX
    • Nat Geo
    • NBC Sports
    • Tastemade
    • NBA TV

There’s a 4K tab on the home screen that shows you upcoming sports events as well as a lineup of on-demand programming. You can also look for the 4K symbol while scrolling through channels, or type “4K” in the search bar. YouTube TV notes that 4K resolution is very limited for Apple TV and PS4 Pro. As with all streaming services that offer 4K content, you must have a compatible streaming device or smart TV.

    See at Max

Best for premium 4K TV shows, feature films

    Max

Like Netflix, Max has a large selection of 4K content, and it also charges more to stream it. You need the $20-a-month Ultimate plan to access content in this format. When the service relaunched in May, the company said it would have over 1,000 movies and TV show episodes available in 4K at rollout. Warner Bros. Discovery promised to add more in the coming months, plus all-new WBD theatrical films that hit the streamer will arrive in ultra HD.

Right now, you can stream a range of titles including The Flash, The Last of Us, Euphoria, The Lord of the Rings trilogy and House of the Dragon in higher resolution. You can also watch classics like The Wizard of Oz and Casablanca in 4K. There’s no dedicated hub for the content, but viewers can check for the 4K UHD badge in the title’s details.

    See at Apple TV Plus

Best for affordable, high-quality 4K originals

    Apple TV Plus

With roughly 125 titles available in the highest resolution, Apple TV Plus’ 4K collection may not seem that robust at first glance. But your $10-a-month subscription is all you need to access it. All Apple Originals are in 4K with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision support, though TV shows and movies from other studios may only stream up to 1080p resolution.

You can watch Ted Lasso, Foundation, Severance and kids’ shows like Stillwater or The Snoopy Show in 4K. Your viewing experience is even better if you’re streaming with an Apple TV 4K box, or another compatible device like a Roku 4K stick or smart TV.

Best service you probably already have

    Prime Video

Prime Video’s 4K lineup includes Amazon originals as well as a variety of mainstream films, including Good Omens, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Top Gun: Maverick, and the 1996 anime Ghost in the Shell. You can also stream older movies such as The Goonies or 1989’s Batman in 4K. You can locate 4K content on Prime Video several ways. There’s a filter on the web page, but if you type in “4K” or “4K UHD” on your TV screen, rows of TV shows and movies will pop up.

Freevee content is included in the Prime Video app, and some offerings like Despicable Me 3 are available in UHD. You can also buy or rent content on this service, which is handy when you want to stream a new digital release such as Barbie in 4K.

    Other streaming services we’ve checked

Hulu: Hulu is a great streaming platform for broadcast television, originals and on-demand content. However, there is a limited amount of titles available in 4K.

Hulu with live TV: There is no 4K programming available at this time.

Paramount Plus: This service has less than 200 TV show episodes and movies you can stream in 4K, and you need a premium subscription to watch. Compared with the other streaming platforms on this list that require a more expensive plan, Paramount Plus has less 4K content. However, if you like this service, there is something for you to stream.

Peacock: Peacock has a nice selection of originals, big movies like Fast X and titles like Yellowstone in 4K. Though the platform provides 4K streaming for both of its premium subscription plans, its library is fairly small with roughly 60 offerings.

Fubo: The live TV streaming service has a selection of sports content in 4K, but overall, its UHD roster is limited.

Starz: Starz doesn’t offer 4K streaming at this time.

    How we test streaming services

It’s likely you’re already familiar with most of the platforms on this list, but this list isn’t comprehensive. There are hundreds of services out there. In general, we evaluate streaming services according to design (ease of use across different TV and mobile platforms), features (like 4K HDR, mobile downloads, recommendations, watch lists and number of streams), content (number of shows and quality of originals and back catalogs) and value (price compared to these other factors). You can read our full reviews for more details.

Most streaming services offer a smattering of 4K content, and I researched the number of titles on each along with how they’re labeled, how easy it is to search for 4K programming, quality and cost.

The ‘Barbie’ Movie Streaming on Max: Release Date and Time

Lots of people went to see Barbie — the Greta Gerwig-directed movie about the Mattel doll — in theaters. Now, Max is offering the hot pink cultural phenomenon to its streaming subscribers.

Set in Barbie Land, Barbie sees Margot Robbie’s and Ryan Gosling’s versions of Barbie and Ken travel to the real world, which holds all sorts of surprises. The star-studded cast also includes Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, America Ferrera, Rhea Perlman, Will Ferrell, Emma Mackey, Simu Liu, Ariana Greenblatt, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Michael Cera and more.

Barbie is Warner Bros.’ highest grossing global release of all time. Here’s how you can stream the blockbuster film from your human-size couch.

Margot Robbie smiles as she looks over her sunglasses with a cloudy sky in the background in the Barbie movie.

When to watch Barbie on Max

Dec. 15 is the best day ever, as Robbie’s Barbie might say, because it’s when you can stream the Barbie movie on Max. The movie will be available to stream at 12 a.m. PT/3 a.m. ET. The film will also stream on the platform in American Sign Language.

Max has three plans: $10 a month Max With Ads, $16 a month Max Ad-Free and $20 a month Max Ultimate Ad-Free. The streamer’s offerings include HBO and Max originals, Warner Bros. movies, DC Comics films, and programming from brands like HGTV, Food Network, Discovery Channel, TLC and ID.

You can also rent Greta Gerwig’s Barbie for $6 from services like Amazon, Apple TV and Vudu. If you want to pair Barbie with Christopher Nolan’s movie Oppenheimer, which notably hit theaters on the same day in July, it’s available to buy for $20 from the same services.

How to watch Barbie from anywhere with a VPN

Perhaps you’re traveling abroad and want to stream Max while away from home. With a VPN, you’re able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the movie from anywhere in the world. There are other good reasons to use a VPN for streaming too.

A VPN is the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds by encrypting your traffic. Using a VPN is also a great idea if you’re traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network and want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins. Streaming TV can be a bit smoother with a reliable, quality VPN that’s passed our tests and security standards.

You can use a VPN to stream content legally as long as VPNs are allowed in your country and you have a valid subscription to the streaming service you’re using. The US and Canada are among the countries where VPNs are legal, but we advise against streaming or downloading content on illegal torrent sites. We recommend ExpressVPN, but you may opt for another provider from our best list such as Surfshark or NordVPN.

Follow the VPN provider’s instructions for installation, and choose the United States, where Barbie will be streaming on Max. Before you open the streaming app, make sure you are connected to your VPN using your selected region. If you want to stream Barbie on more than one device, it’s possible you’ll need to configure each one to ensure you are signed in. Go to settings and check your network connections to verify you’re logged in and connected to your VPN account. Now you’re ready to open Max to stream.

If you run into issues with streaming, first make sure your VPN is up and running on its encrypted IP address. Double-check that you’ve followed installation instructions correctly and you’ve picked the right geographical area for viewing. If you still encounter connection problems, you may need to reboot your device. Close all apps and windows, restart your device and connect to your VPN first. Note that some streaming services have restrictions on VPN access.

Broncos vs. Chargers Livestream: How to Watch NFL Week 14 Online Today

The Broncos struggled to recover from an early 13-0 hole in Week 13 against the Texans, dropping the contest and falling to 6-6 on the 2023 season.

On Sunday they head out to California to take on the Chargers. Los Angeles has similarly endured its own struggles so far this season and sits at 5-7 on the year after a 6-0 win against the Patriots last Sunday.

Kickoff is called for 4:25 p.m. ET (1:25 p.m. PT) on CBS. We’ll show you how you can watch, even if the game isn’t available on your local CBS channel.

The game will be shown on TV in the Denver and Los Angeles areas (according to 506 Sports) on live TV streaming services, but there may be cases where you’re blocked because of an internet location glitch or just want an added layer of privacy for streaming. There is an option that doesn’t require subscribing to something like NFL Sunday Ticket or NFL Plus, or searching the internet for a sketchy website: You can use a virtual private network, or VPN.

Here’s how you can watch the game from anywhere in the US with a VPN.

Broncos vs. Chargers game today: When and where?

This Week 14 NFL fixture sees the Chargers host the Broncos at 4:25 p.m. ET (1:25 p.m. PT) on Sunday. The game will take place at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, home of the Chargers.

How to watch the Broncos vs. Chargers game online from anywhere using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view the game locally due to incorrectly applied blackout restrictions, you may need a different way to watch the game; that’s where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds on game day by encrypting your traffic, plus it’s a great idea for when you’re traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you’re able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the game. So if your internet provider or mobile carrier has stuck you with an IP address that incorrectly shows your location in a blackout zone, a VPN can correct that problem by giving you an IP address in your correct, non-blackout area. Most VPNs, like our Editors’ Choice, ExpressVPN, make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US and Canada, as long as you’ve got a legitimate subscription to the service you’re streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

How to watch Broncos vs. Chargers in the US

This week’s Broncos-Chargersgame is on CBS, so in addition to a VPN, you’ll need a live TV streaming service that carries a local CBS affiliate that’s broadcasting the game. The good news for football fans is that CBS is available on most of the major streaming services. The least expensive option is Paramount Plus.

Numerous other live TV streaming services carry local CBS stations as well, namely YouTube TV, Hulu Plus Live TV, DirecTV Stream and Fubo. They all cost far more than Paramount Plus, but they also carry many live channels, including football broadcasting channels like Fox and ESPN. Check out our live TV streaming services guide for details.

If you live in an area where the game is being broadcast, an over-the-air antenna connected to your TV provides another option for CBS. The best part about antennas is that there are no streaming or monthly fees required, though you will need to make sure you have good reception.

Quick tips for streaming the Broncos vs. Chargers game using a VPN

    • With four variables at play — your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN — experience and success may vary.
    • If you don’t see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the “search for city or country” option.
    • If you’re having trouble getting the game after you’ve turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs — like Roku — don’t have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you’ll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you’re using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
    • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network’s sports app, you’ll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
    • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you’re using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend Brave.

Week 14 of the NFL season sees the 49ers host the Seahawks at 1 p.m. ET (10 a.m. PT) on Sunday. The game will take place at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, home of the 49ers.

How to watch the Seahawks vs. 49ers game online from anywhere using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view the game locally due to incorrectly applied blackout restrictions, you may need a different way to watch; that’s where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds on game day by encrypting your traffic, and it’s a great idea for when you’re traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network and want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you can virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the game. If your internet provider or mobile carrier has assigned you an IP address that incorrectly places you in a blackout zone, a VPN can solve for that by giving you an IP address in your correct, non-blackout area. Most VPNs — like our Editors’ Choice, ExpressVPN — make it really easy to do this.

Livestream the Seahawks vs. 49ers game in the US

This week’s Seahawks-49ers game is on Fox, so in addition to a VPN set to an area carrying the game (see tips below) you’ll need a live TV streaming service that carries a local Fox affiliate that’s broadcasting the game. The least expensive such service is Sling TV Blue.

Numerous other live TV streaming services carry local Fox stations as well, namely YouTube TV, Hulu Plus Live TV, DirecTV Stream and Fubo. They all cost more than Sling TV, but they also carry more channels, including football-broadcasting channels like ESPN. Check out our live TV streaming services guide for details.

If you live in an area where the game is being broadcast, an over-the-air antenna connected to your TV provides another option for Fox. The best part about antennas is that no streaming or monthly fees are required, although you will need to make sure you have good reception.

Quick tips for streaming Seahawks vs. 49ers using a VPN

    • With four variables at play — your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN — experience and success may vary.
    • Sling Blue is only an option if and when the ability to get Fox local affiliates is active on your account. You may want to verify that your billing address is eligible for that option before committing your credit card.

Jaguars vs. Browns Livestream: How to Watch NFL Week 14 Online Today

It’s likely to be a battle of backup QBs between these two AFC playoff hopefuls in Cleveland on Sunday. Joe Flacco is expected to start for the second straight week for the 7-5 Browns, while C.J. Beathard will fill in if Trevor Lawrence is unable to play for the 8-4 Jaguars. Flacco is the fourth quarterback to start a game for the Browns this season.

The 38-year-old looked good in his first start in Los Angeles in a loss to the Rams last week. It would be the first start for Beathard this season, who has seen little action backing up Lawrence until the Jags’ starting quarterback suffered a high-ankle sprain during the team’s loss last week on Monday Night Football.

The Jaguars and Browns kick off in Cleveland at 1 p.m. ET (10 a.m. PT) on CBS. We’ll show you how you can watch, even if the game isn’t available on your local CBS channel.
