Premier League Soccer Livestream: How to Watch Man United vs. Chelsea From Anywhere

Manchester United will be hoping to bring some rare cheer to Old Trafford today, as Erik ten Hag’s struggling side face Chelsea at home in the English Premier League.

United have had a week to forget, after their damaging 3-3 draw in their Champions League trip to Galatasaray was followed by an equally demoralizing 1-0 defeat at Newcastle on Saturday.

Unlike United, Chelsea are showing signs of improvement after their poor start to the campaign, with Mauricio Pochettino’s men coming into this fixture off the back of a feisty 3-2 victory against Brighton.

One point of optimism for the hosts ahead of this match is United’s recent record against the Blues. The Red Devils are currently on an unbeaten run of 11 league games against their west London rivals, with their last loss against Chelsea coming in a 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge all the way back in November 2017.

Below, we’ll outline the best live TV streaming services for watching all of the action live wherever you are in the world.

Manchester United vs. Chelsea: When and where?

Manchester United host Chelsea at Old Trafford on Wednesday, Dec. 6. Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m. GMT local time. That’s 3:15 p.m. ET or 12:15 p.m. PT in the US and Canada, and 7:15 a.m. AEDT early on Thursday morning in Australia.

How to watch the Manchester United vs. Chelsea game online from anywhere using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view the game locally, you may need a different way to watch — that’s where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds on game day by encrypting your traffic, and it’s also a great idea if you’re traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you’re able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the game. So if your internet provider or mobile carrier has stuck you with an IP address that incorrectly shows your location in a blackout zone, a VPN can correct that problem by giving you an IP address in your correct, non-blackout area. Most VPNs, like our Editors’ Choice, ExpressVPN, make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Canada, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you’re streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

Livestream the Man United vs. Chelsea game in the US

Wednesday’s Man United vs. Chelsea match is streaming on Peacock. You’ll need a Peacock Premium or Premium Plus account to catch the game live.

Livestream the Manchester United vs. Chelsea game in the UK

Premier League rights in the UK are split between Sky Sports, Amazon Prime Video and TNT Sports (previously known as BT Sport). Man United vs. Chelsea is part of a full program of Premier League games being shown exclusively live on Amazon Prime this week.

Livestream the Man United vs. Chelsea game in Canada

If you want to stream this match live in Canada, you’ll need to subscribe to Fubo Canada. The service has exclusive rights for this Premier League season.

Livestream the Man United vs. Chelsea game in Australia

Football fans Down Under can watch this EPL fixture on streaming service Optus Sport, which is showing every single Premier League game live in Australia this season.

Quick tips for streaming the Premier League using a VPN

    • With four variables at play — your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN — your experience and success when streaming EPL matches may vary.
    • If you don’t see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the “search for city or country” option.
    • If you’re having trouble getting the game after you’ve turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs — like Roku — don’t have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you’ll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you’re using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
    • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network’s sports app, you’ll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
    • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you’re using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend Brave.
  • iOS 17.2: Apple’s Journal App and More Are Almost Here

iOS 17.2: Apple’s Journal App and More Are Almost Here

Apple released the iOS 17.2 release candidate, or RC, on Tuesday, which means the iOS update will likely be released to the general public in the next week or two. The RC includes at least a dozen new features, including long-awaited additions such as the Journal app and Contact Key Verification. Developers and beta testers can download and try the RC and all the new features now.

We recommend downloading the RC on something other than your primary device. Since this isn’t the final version of iOS 17.2, these features might be buggy and battery life may be shortened, and it’s best to keep that experience to a secondary device.

If you’re a developer or public beta tester, here are some of the new features you can find in the iOS 17.2 RC. Note that these might not be the only new features to land on your iPhone when iOS 17.2 is released.

    The Journal app

Apple finally debuted the Journal app with iOS 17.2 beta 1. The tech giant announced the app at the company’s WWDC event in June alongside iOS 17, but it was absent from the update’s launch on Sept. 18. It now appears Journal will be included in iOS 17.2.

Apple said at WWDC that the app uses on-device machine learning to create personalized writing suggestions. Some of these suggestions are created using information on your iPhone, like photos you’ve taken and music and podcasts you’ve listened to throughout the day. And if you forget what podcast you listened to earlier in the day — like I regularly do — the app shows you that information when you go to make an entry.

    Reflections in the Journal app

The app also shows you a handful of topics to write about, called Reflections. Some of my Reflections included, “Write about a time you gave someone an unexpected gift,” and, “Who cheers you up when you’re feeling down?”

But if you don’t want to write about whatever you listened to or use a Reflection, you can just write by tapping the New Entry button. In New Entry, you can write whatever you want, or create a voice note, take a photo or create a video to add to your journal entry.

You can also lock the app after it’s closed for a set amount of time for some privacy. So if you close the app and don’t reopen it for a certain amount of time, like five minutes, it will ask for your Face ID or passcode to open it again.

With iOS 17.2 beta 3, Journal asks you to set up a journaling schedule the first time you open the app. You can set the schedule for a certain time every day, every other day or however often you’d like to journal. Once that’s done, Journal will notify you when it’s time to journal. The option to schedule notifications to remind you to journal isn’t new, but this splash screen is.

    Contact Key Verification in Messages

Apple announced Contact Key Verification in December 2022, and the security feature finally appeared in iOS 17.2 beta 1.

“With iMessage Contact Key Verification, users who face extraordinary digital threats — such as journalists, human rights activists, and members of government — can choose to further verify that they are messaging only with the people they intend,” Apple said in a news release in December.

Apple wrote that many people won’t be the target of a cyberattack, but Contact Key Verification gives people who might be a target an additional security layer.

To enable Contact Key Verification go to Settings > Apple ID >Contact Key Verification, tap the slider next to Verification in iMessage and follow the on-screen prompts.

    React with Live Stickers

A text showing a picture of a dog

Live Stickers is a new feature Apple introduced in iOS 17 at launch. The feature lets you create your own stickers from pictures you’ve taken. And in iOS 17.2 beta 1, you can react to texts in Messages with your Live Stickers. To react with a Live Sticker, long-press on a text like you would to add a reaction, then tap Add Sticker in the dropdown menu to pull up your stickers.

    New Apple Music settings

If you subscribe to Apple Music — which costs $11 a month — iOS 17.2 beta 3 lets you automatically add songs you’ve favorited to your library. If you don’t like this, you can turn the setting off by going to Settings > Music and tapping the toggle next to Add Favorite Songs.

    More Memoji customization

In iOS 17.2 beta 1, there’s a new menu in the Memoji editor called Body that lets you edit the appearance of your Memoji’s body. You can adjust your Memoji’s waist, bust, shoulders and arms in this menu. However, there are only three options in each of these sections as of the time of this writing, so Memoji isn’t a full-on character creator menu as you’d see in a video game.

Change your default notification sounds and haptics

In iOS 17.2 beta 4, Apple allows you to change the default notification sound. This is the first time Apple has allowed iPhone users to change the default notification sound. To change this sound, go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Default Alerts, and you’ll be able to select new and classic tones.

In the Default Alerts menu, you can also change your haptics by tapping Haptics near the top of the page. Here you can choose between a handful of haptic patterns, and you can create a custom haptic by tapping Create New Vibration.

Photos and Apple Music working together

If you go into the Photos app after updating to the iOS 17.2 beta 3, Photos will ask permission to access your Apple Music library. The screen says it will use songs from your library to curate songs for your Memories.

    AppleCare and Warranty menu

In iOS 17.2 beta 4, if you go to Settings > General you’ll see a new option called AppleCare and Warranty. If you tap into this option, you’ll see all of your devices that are or aren’t covered under AppleCare or a warranty. In previous betas, this option was called Coverage.

    Catch-up arrow in Messages

A new feature in iOS 17.2 beta 1 can help you understand what’s happening in a texting group or if someone sends you a lot of messages. The beta brings the catch-up arrow back to Messages, so if you wake from a nap with a lot of messages, you can jump to the beginning of the new messages and follow the drama for context.

The catch-up arrow was in some early iOS 17 betas, but it has been absent since.

New options for sharing Contact Posters

In iOS 17.2 beta 3, you can now share your Contact Poster through Phone and FaceTime. If you go to Settings and either Phone or FaceTime, you will see an option called Share Name and Photo. Tap this and you can select whether to automatically share your Contact Poster with your contacts or whether to require your phone to always ask before sharing. This feature was only in Message before.

iPhone 15 Pro action button updated

Action button on the iPhone 15 Pro Max

According to the Apple news blog iSoftware Updates, iOS 17.2 beta 1 updates the iPhone 15 Pro’s action button. With the beta, the action button now has a translate function. The new function will reportedly allow you to translate phrases or have a conversation with someone in another language.

Sharing content between your iPhone and Apple Vision Pro

Apple announced its Vision Pro headset at WWDC in June. While you can’t buy the Vision Pro yet — Apple plans for the headset to be available in the US in early 2024 — iOS 17.2 beta 1 introduces a setting to allow your iPhone to work as an additional screen for it.

The setting is called AirPlay Receiver and can be found under AirPlay & Handoff in Settings. Apple writes that AirPlay Receiver allows you to stream or share content from your Vision Pro headset to your iPhone.

Spatial Video recording for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max

The second iOS 17.2 beta has a new feature that allows iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max users to record Spatial Video. This feature will supposedly allow the video to be viewed in 3D on the upcoming Vision Pro headset. Spatial Videos can also be viewed in the Photos app as normal videos.

Disable inline predictions on your keyboard

Keyboards option with Show Predictions Inline outlined in red

Have you ever been typing a text in Messages and suddenly a gray word appears in front of your cursor? This is called inline text predictions, and if you’ve ever been confused or annoyed by this feature, iOS 17.2 beta 3 introduces the ability to turn it off. In the beta, you go to Settings > General > Keyboard and tap the slider next to Show Predictions Inline.

    More Sensitive Content Warnings

Sensitive Content Warnings were introduced in iOS 17 and blur out images and videos that show up in certain Apple services and that might contain nudity. With iOS 17.2 beta 2, these warnings have been expanded to include contact posters that might include nudity.

    More Siri requests

With iOS 17.2 beta 2, you can ask Siri a few new questions, like what your altitude is and what’s your estimated arrival time if you’re using the voice assistant for directions.

Siri responding that a person's altitude is 919 feet above sea level

    Collaborative playlists in Apple Music

With iOS 17.2 beta 1, Apple introduced collaborative playlists for Apple Music subscribers. However, this feature disappeared in iOS 17.2 beta 4. It’s unclear now if collaborative playlists will be included in iOS 17.2 when it’s released to the general public later this year.

    Updated Weather widget and app

In previous iOS versions, you’d have three options for a Weather widget: a small tile, a medium size tile bar and a large tile that took up half your screen. All showed the current weather conditions in more detail as they went up in size.

In the first beta of iOS 17.2 though, you have six Weather widgets to choose from. The first three are the original small, medium and large tiles. The three new widgets are all the same size as the small tile, but show more details for the day.

One tile shows the current condition, precipitation, UV index, wind levels and air quality index. Another tile shows the current conditions plus the expected conditions for the next four days. And the final new tile shows when you can expect the sunrise and sunset.

The Weather app also has a few new features, like an interactive moon calendar, the amount of rain for your area over time, and wind speed and direction. The updated Weather app is like having your own meteorologist in your pocket.

    New digital Clock widget

In iOS 17.2 beta 1, the Clock widget gets an update as well. The Clock widget now gives you the option for a digital clock to easily read the time.

The clock widget showing 2:42 and the Weather widget showing the forecast for Denver

    News app supports Live Activities

The News app also gets an update in iOS 17.2 beta 1. Now, you can enable Live Activities for the app, so you can follow news events, like elections, as they happen on Live Activity-enabled iPhones.

    Apple TV app updated

The Apple TV app also gets an update with iOS 17.2 beta 1. If you open the app and tap Store in the bottom menu, you’ll see the Movies and TV Shows sectionsacross the top of your screenare gone.

Local Awareness option in Emergency Alerts

Emergency Alerts menu in iOS 17.2 beta 1

With iOS 17.1 beta 1, there’s a new option in the Emergency Alerts menu called Local Awareness. Apple writes that if you enable this option, it uses your approximate location to improve the accuracy, timeliness and reliability of emergency alerts you receive.

    More Contact Poster customization options

Contact Posters is another new feature Apple introduced with iOS 17. With iOS 17.2 beta 1, you can customize your Contact Posters even more by giving you the option to give a contact poster rainbow-colored text.

Here are the full release notes for the iOS 17.2 RC:

Snag Portable Sonos Roam Speakers for as Little as $119 Right Now

If you’re looking for top-notch sound, Sonos has a lot to offer. While the brand’s speakers are notoriously expensive, you’ll find the occasional deal that makes it a little more affordable to invest in one without breaking the bank. Right now both the Sonos Roam and the Roam SL are discounted by up to $46 at both Best Buy and Sonos, meaning you can snag one for as little as $119. That makes it a great time to grab one of these portable mini speakers for yourself or as a holiday gift for a loved one. We’re not sure how long these markdowns will last, so we recommend making your purchase sooner rather than later to take advantage of this deal.

The Sonos Roam is one of our favorite portable mini Bluetooth speakers for 2023. It weighs less than a pound and has an ultra compact design for portability, plus it comes equipped with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, is rated IP67 water- and dustproof and delivers a good sound for its size. And full charge will deliver up to 10 hours of playback, depending on which settings you use. It’s also compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for voice control and automatically optimizes sound based on your location. This speaker’s main drawback is the hefty price tag of $179 — but right now you can score the Roam for just $134 at Best Buy, which has price matched the cost of buying from Sonos directly. That’s a $46 discount.

But if you don’t need a smart speaker per se and won’t mind going without the voice control features available on the Roam, then you may prefer to opt for the cheaper Roam SL. It’s discounted by $41 right now, bringing the price to just $119 at Best Buy — once again price matching the deal Sonos is offering.

Both companies are also sweetening the deal, with Best Buy offering four months of SiriusXM to new subscribers and Sonos offering three months of Apple Music to new subscribers with the purchase of the Roam or Roam SL. And be sure to check out other smart home deals to get all the devices you’ll want for your home.

In his full review last year, CNET’s headphone expert David Carnoy praised the Buds Pro’s “very good sound and impressive noise canceling,” as well as their battery life and voice call quality.

It’s important to note that Amazon hasn’t yet said when this deal is going to end, which means that it might disappear without notice — make sure to get your order in now if you plan on taking advantage of that hefty $80 saving. • Google’s New Gemini AI Will Understand Your Photos and Videos, not Just Text

Google’s New Gemini AI Will Understand Your Photos and Videos, not Just Text

Google has begun bringing a native understanding of video, audio and photos to its Bard AI chatbot with a new model called Gemini.

The first incarnations of the new technology arrived Wednesday in dozens of countries, but only in English, providing text-based chat abilities that Google says improves the AI’s abilities in complex tasks like summarizing documents, reasoning and writing programming code. The bigger change with multimedia abilities, for example understanding the data underlying a graph or figuring out the result of a child’s dot-to-dot drawing puzzle, will arrive “soon,” Google said.

The new version represents a dramatic departure for AI. Text-based chat is important, but humans must process much richer information as we inhabit our three-dimensional, ever-changing world. And we respond with complex communication abilities, like speech and imagery, not just written words. Gemini is an attempt to come closer to our own fuller understanding of the world.

Gemini comes in three versions tailored for different levels of computing power, Google said:

    • Gemini Nano runs on mobile phones, with two varieties available built for different levels of available memory. It’ll power new features on Google’s Pixel 8 phones, like summarizing conversations in its Recorder app or suggesting message replies in WhatsApp typed with Google’s Gboard.
    • Gemini Pro, tuned for fast responses, runs in Google’s data centers and will power a new version of Bard, starting Wednesday.
    • Gemini Ultra, limited to a test group for now, will be available in a new Bard Advanced chatbot due in early 2024. Google declined to reveal pricing details, but expect to pay a premium for this top capability.

The new version spotlights the breakneck pace of advancement in the new generative AI field, where chatbots create their own responses to prompts that we write in plain language rather than arcane programming instructions. Google’s top competitor, OpenAI, stole a march with the launch of ChatGPT a year ago, but already Google is on its third major AI model revision and expects to deliver that technology through products that billions of us use, like search, Chrome, Google Docs and Gmail.

“For a long time we wanted to build a new generation of AI models inspired by the way people understand and interact with the world — an AI that feels more like a helpful collaborator and less like a smart piece of software,” said Eli Collins, a product vice president at Google’s DeepMind division. “Gemini brings us a step closer to that vision.”

AI is getting smarter, but it’s not perfect

Multimedia likely will be a big change compared to text when it arrives. But what hasn’t changed is the fundamental problems of AI models trained by recognizing patterns in vast quantities of real-world data. They can turn increasingly complex prompts into increasingly sophisticated responses, but you still can’t trust that they didn’t just provide an answer that was plausible instead of actually correct. As Google’s chatbot warns when you use it, “Bard may display inaccurate info, including about people, so double-check its responses.”

Gemini is the next generation of Google’s large language model, a sequel to the PaLM and PaLM 2 that have been the foundation of Bard so far. But by training Gemini simultaneously on text, programming code, images, audio and video, it’s able to more efficiently cope with multimedia input than with separate but interlinked AI models for each mode of input.

Examples of Gemini’s abilities, according to a Google research paper, are diverse.

Looking at a series of shapes consisting of a triangle, square and pentagon, it can correctly guess the next shape in the series is a hexagon. Presented with photos of the moon and a hand holding a golf ball and asked to find the link, it correctly points out that Apollo astronauts hit two golf balls on the moon in 1971. It converted four bar charts showing country-by-country waste disposal techniques into a labeled table and spotted an outlying data point, namely that the US throws a lot more plastic in the dump than other regions.

The company also showed Gemini processing a handwritten physics problem involving a simple sketch, figuring out where a student’s error lay, and explaining a correction. A more involved demo video showed Gemini recognizing a blue duck, hand puppets, sleight-of-hand tricks and other videos. None of the demos were live, however, and it’s not clear how often Gemini fumbles such challenges.

Gemini Ultra awaits further testing before appearing next year.

“Red teaming,” in which a product-maker enlists people to find security vulnerabilities and other problems, is underway for Gemini Ultra. Such tests are more complicated with multimedia input data. For example, a text message and photo could each be innocuous on their own, but when paired could convey dramatically different meaning.

“We’re approaching this work boldly and responsibly,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in a blog post. That means a combination of ambitious research with big potential payoffs, but also adding safeguards and working collaboratively with governments and others “to address risks as AI becomes more capable.”

After being controversially held to a draw by Spurs at the weekend, Man City faces another tricky fixture as they take on top-four-chasing Aston Villa.

Sunday’s six-goal thriller at the Etihad means Manchester City have now gone three consecutive league matches without a win — the first time Pep Guardiola’s side have experienced such a run in over six years.

They face a Villa side that was also left frustrated at the weekend after being held to a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth. Villa remain in the top four following that result, but with their superb home form this term, they’ll be confident of pulling off a statement win against a City side that has been uncharacteristically conceding goals.

Below, we’ll outline the best live TV streaming services for watching all of the action live wherever you are in the world.

Aston Villa vs. Manchester City: When and where?

Aston Villa host Manchester City at Villa Park on Wednesday, Dec. 6. Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m. GMT local time. That’s 3:15 p.m. ET or 12:15 p.m. PT in the US and Canada, and 7:15 a.m. AEDT early on Thursday morning in Australia.

How to watch the Aston Villa vs. Man City game online from anywhere using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view the game locally, you may need a different way to watch; that’s where using a VPN can come in handy.

These Are the Most Annoying iOS 17 Features. Here’s How to Fix Them

If you have a supported iPhone, you’re able to download iOS 17, the latest iteration of Apple’s iOS software. Launched alongside the iPhone 15 family back in September, the new iPhone OS brings a few cool new features to iPhones, like StandBy mode, interactive widgets, full-screen contact posters for phone calls, an improved and more personalized autocorrect and much more.

While most of these features are welcome additions and changes, if you’re like me, you might not love every new offering from iOS 17. Sometimes I just don’t want change, especially when the change is super drastic.

I get used to a way of doing certain things. For instance, I wasn’t a fan of the new search button at the bottom of each home page when I upgraded to iOS 16, because I’d accidentally trigger it all the time. It isn’t necessarily a bad feature, I just personally didn’t like it.

With iOS 17, there are a few features I’m not a huge fan of, as well. If you want to find out about some of the iOS 17 settings I sometimes find annoying, keep reading. Even better, there’s a “fix” for all of them, so you can either get rid of them or never have to deal with them again.

While you’re here, check out the iOS 17 settings you need to change ASAP and the best hidden features in iOS 17.

Stop NameDrop from automatically sharing your contact info

The new NameDrop feature on iOS 17 allows you to quickly swap contact information via AirDrop simply by bringing your iPhone near another iPhone or Apple Watch. Your name and Contact Poster (also new with iOS 17) are shared with NameDrop, along with your phone number, email address and other information.

Some people have had issues with NameDrop sharing info when they don’t want to. For example, if you place your iPhone near another iPhone in general, NameDrop may attempt to transfer your contact information. If you carry two iPhones in your bag — one personal and the other for work — NameDrop could attempt to share contact info between the two, which can be annoying when you’re not trying to use the feature on purpose.

Fortunately, there’s an easy way to disable NameDrop completely. In the Settings application, go to General > AirDrop and toggle off Bringing Devices Together. Once the feature is off, you won’t be able to swap numbers and information via NameDrop.

    Hide notifications in StandBy

The StandBy feature is arguably one of the biggest new iOS 17 features to the iPhone, turning your phone into a smart display when it’s charging horizontally and showcasing information, like the time, your calendar, photos and notifications, in large blocks that are easy to see. StandBy is a great way to quickly absorb information by glancing at your phone, but if people are around and you want to keep some of your information private, you may not want StandBy to show notifications.

In Settings > StandBy, toggle off Show Notifications. Now when you’re in StandBy mode, you won’t see all of your notifications displayed. Critical notifications, like weather emergencies, will still be shown in StandBy mode.

Alternatively, you can hide notification previews instead of the entire notification. That way, you can still see what notifications you’re getting, you just can’t check out the exact details unless you tap on the notification. For this to work, you’ll need to enable Show Notifications, as well as the Show Preview on Top Only setting underneath.

Stop Siri from activating so easily

Siri received a few major changes in iOS 17, including the ability to activate the voice assistant by only saying “Siri” — no more “hey” needed. It’s an easier way to quickly open an application or run a shortcut with just your voice, but at the same time, you might accidentally trigger Siri more often, since the new trigger is just a single word now.

If you want to go back to only having Siri activated when you say “Hey Siri” and not just “Siri,” go into Settings > Siri & Search > Listen for and choose the solo “Hey Siri” option. Your iPhone will no longer activate Siri simply when you say “Siri.”

  • Android vs. iPhone: 15 Years of Rivalry and Innovation

Android vs. iPhone: 15 Years of Rivalry and Innovation

“I’m going to destroy Android, because it’s a stolen product,” Steve Jobs says in author Walter Isaacson’s 2011 biography of the late Apple co-founder.

Jobs’ fury around Google and its smartphone software is well documented, and the many lawsuits involving Apple and various Android partners showed that Jobs was serious about his allegations of theft. But the reality is that both Apple and Google have taken inspiration from each other for years and that neither company would be where it is today without the work of the other.

So, because this year saw Android mark its 15th anniversary (since the launch of the first Android-based phone, the T-Mobile G1), let’s take a look back at the journey the companies have taken to becoming the most dominant forces in the tech world — and how their competition pushed them to innovate.

The T-Mobile G1 phone, with its keyboard exposed

Smartphones have arguably changed the world more than any other invention in human history, from radically altering how we interact with one another to creating a whole new category of companies that deal in various mobile technologies. And though Jobs may have been outspokenly vitriolic about Android in the early days, it’s clear that ideas and inspiration have echoed back and forth between Apple and Google in the years since.

During the last 15 years of competition between the two companies, it’s often felt like we’ve been watching siblings bickering at playtime, falling out over who had which toy first or crying to their parents when the other one took something that wasn’t theirs. Most siblings will argue to some extent throughout their lives, but history is also rife with pairings that, through spirited competition, pushed each sibling to succeed.

“When we play against each other, we always raise each other’s game,” global tennis star Venus Williams once said, referring to her competition with sister Serena, who, like Venus, was a dominant Grand Slam player during her time in the sport.

Serena and Venus Williams on the tennis court

The Williams sisters grew up with competition in their blood, challenging each other on the court and learning to read each other’s movements so precisely that they could respond with the exact play needed to counter — and win. Competing against the best helped Venus and Serena reach the top of their game, learning how to beat not just each other but also other rivals in the sport, in much the same way Apple and Google have done.

The two companies’ volleying back and forth pushed them ahead in the game, and allowed them to fight off other challengers, like the once-dominant BlackBerry, as well as Nokia and its short-lived Symbian platform. Even tech giant Microsoft and its Windows Phone failed to thrive in the face of the heated competition from Apple and Google.

But though the relationship today between the iPhone maker and the Android purveyor hardly matches the Williams’ friendly, familial rivalry, that wasn’t always the case. Let’s take a look back.

    Beginnings

Android began as its own company (Android Inc.) back in 2003, and it wasn’t acquired by Google until 2005. Meanwhile, Apple already had success with mobile products in the form of the iPod, the iPhone began development in secret in 2004 and Jobs was reportedly approached to become Google CEO.

Jobs didn’t take the role, but Google found a CEO in Eric Schmidt, who in 2006 became part of Apple’s board of directors. “There was so much overlap that it was almost as if Apple and Google were a single company,” journalist Steven Levy wrote in his 2011 book In the Plex: How Google Thinks, Works, and Shapes Our Lives. Things didn’t stay as cozy, however.

Steve Jobs on stage introducing iOS 3.1

In January 2007 Apple unveiled the first iPhone, and in November 2007 Google showed off two prototypes. One, a Blackberry-esque phone that made use of hardware buttons and scroll wheels, had been in the prototype phase for some time. The more recent prototype was dominated by a large touchscreen and appeared to be much more like the iPhone.

That didn’t go down well with Jobs, who threatened the destruction of Android using “every penny of Apple’s $40 billion in the bank.” The first Android phone, the T-Mobile G1, combined elements of both those prototypes, with a touchscreen that slid out to reveal a physical keyboard. Schmidt left Apple’s board of directors in 2009 due to potential conflicts of interest, and so began a series of lawsuits involving Apple and various Google partners over alleged infringement of phone-related patents.

The most notable of the Google partners was Samsung, which Apple accused of infringing a number of patents, including patents related to basic functions like tap to zoom and slide to unlock. These legal battles raged for years, with Apple claiming that “it is a fact that Samsung blatantly copied our design” and Samsung pushing back. The long dispute finally came to an end in 2018, when both sides agreed to settle out of court.

Despite the competing claims made during those long courtroom struggles, if we look at the development not just of the software but of the phones that run it, it seems clear both sides continued to liberally borrow ideas from each other.

    Samsung's Galaxy S phone

Features like picture-in-picture, live voicemail, lock screen customization and live translation were all found on the Android operating system before eventually making their way to iOS. And though the use of widgets to customize your home screen was long held as a differentiator for Android, that feature too eventually found its way to iOS.

On the other hand, Android’s Nearby Share feature is remarkably similar to Apple’s AirDrop, and Android phones didn’t get features like “do not disturb” or the ability to take screenshots until some time after the iPhone had them.

Apple removed the 3.5mm headphone jack from the iPhone in September 2016, and I distinctly remember that at Google’s launch event for the Pixel the following month, chuckles went round the room when the exec on stage proclaimed, “Yes, it has a headphone jack.” Still, Google itself went on to ditch the headphone jack, with the Pixel 2.

    Google Pixel 2 phone

Sometimes it’s difficult, if not impossible, to say whether these companies are copying each other’s ideas or simply coming up with the same conclusions after paying attention to consumer trends, rumors in the press and the general evolution of supporting technologies.

Rumors that Apple would remove the physical home button on the iPhone X were circling long before the phone was officially unveiled in September 2017. Are they the same rumors Samsung responded to when it “beat Apple to the punch” and removed the home button from its Galaxy S8 earlier that same year? Or did both sides simply arrive at such a big design decision independently?

It’s impossible to pick a side in this argument — and somewhat reductive to even try. And regardless, you wind up with the same thing: Phones and software from different manufacturers that seem to evolve in unison.

    Today

In 2023, Android is by far the dominant smartphone platform, with 70.8% market share globally against Apple’s 28.4% (according to information from Statista). But Google’s focus has always been on getting the Android operating system onto as many devices as possible, from phones costing less than $50 to those costing over $1,500. Apple, meanwhile, offers iOS only on its own devices, and those devices come at a hefty premium, so it’s fair to expect that iOS won’t be as widespread.

Lots of phones laid out flat.

Google’s business model is primarily one of a service provider, though, and not a hardware manufacturer. It makes its money chiefly from selling advertisements across all its platforms, and so it typically benefits from a mass market approach. Android itself is free for companies to use — hence the large number of installs. But to use Google services (Gmail, YouTube, Chrome and so on, along with access to the Google Play Store) companies must pay license fees to Google. Still, the free use of Android is why you’ll find the operating system on phones from Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, Oppo, Nothing and a huge variety of other brands — and yes, on Google’s own Pixel phones.

Apple, however, is a closed shop. Only iPhones can run iOS, and Apple has every intention of keeping it that way. It has full control over how that software works on its phones (and charges developers accordingly for apps sold in its own App Store) and how it can be best optimized for the hardware. That’s why Apple phones typically perform better than many high-end Android phones, despite the hardware often being less high-spec on paper. Android by its nature has to take more of a “one size fits all” approach, where each new version has to run well on a huge variety of devices, with different screen sizes and under-the-hood components.

Android struggled with the arrival of tablets, as software designed for 4-inch phones suddenly had to stretch to fit screens much larger in size. Android 3.0 Honeycomb was primarily designed for tablets, but various issues meant it didn’t hang around for long, and some of its features were simply absorbed into future versions. Apple takes a different approach: Though at first it used iOS for both devices, now it keeps iOS solely for its phones, optimizing for the smaller screen sizes, with the newer iPadOS as the software for its tablets.

    The Pixel 7 Pro phone

Yet it’s still clear to see the ways the two operating systems have converged over the years. Though Android was always the more customizable of the two, Apple eventually introduced home-screen widgets, customizable lock screens and even the ability to create icon themes to transform the look of your device.

Meanwhile, Google worked hard to limit the problems caused by fragmentation and has arguably taken more of an “Apple” approach in its own line of devices. Like Apple’s iPhones, the phones in the more recent Pixel range — including the recent Pixel 8 Pro — were designed to show off “the best of Google,” with processors produced in house (as Apple does with the chips for its iPhones) and software optimized for the Pixel phone it’ll run on.

Though Android may be ahead in terms of numbers of users, Google has clearly seen that Apple is leading the way in terms of a more premium, refined hardware experience, and the Pixel series is Google’s answer. Having reviewed the Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 6 Pro myself, I can say with certainty that they’re the most Apple-like experience you can get from an Android phone.

    The future

“We are at an interesting crossroads for Android,” says Ben Woods, industry analyst at CCS Insight. “Although its success in volume terms is undisputed, it is increasingly losing share to Apple in the premium smartphone space.” Google’s Pixel phones are some of the best Android phones around, but sales of the devices are a fraction of what Apple sees with the iPhone.

    A half-dozen of Samsung's phones

It’s a different story when you look at Android partners, chiefly Samsung, which is jostling with Apple for the position of No. 1 phone manufacturer in the world — a title that seems to frequently slip from one of the companies to the other. But Samsung has a much wider catalog of products, with unit sales being bolstered by a larger number of phones at lower price points. In the premium segment, Apple still rules, and that’s showing no sign of slowing down.

But Android is increasingly betting on longer-term success from its innovation with foldable phones. Samsung is now multiple generations into its Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold devices, with Google’s own Pixel Fold joining the party earlier this year, along with foldables from the likes of Oppo, Motorola and OnePlus. Apple has yet to launch a foldable device, and it remains to be seen whether that’s simply because its take on the genre isn’t ready, or because it believes foldables are a fad that’ll pass (like 3D displays or curving designs).

    iPhone 15 Pro Max

Rather than looking toward more-experimental innovations like foldable displays, Apple has instead continued to refine its existing hardware, equipping its latest iPhone 15 Pro series with titanium designs and improved cameras. And Apple’s approach also includes pulling people into the wider Apple ecosystem, with iPhones syncing seamlessly with other Apple products, including Apple Watches, iPads, Macs, HomePods and Apple TV.

With each new iPhone customer comes an opportunity for Apple to sell additional products from its own catalog, along with services like iCloud storage, Apple Music, Apple Fitness or subscriptions to its Apple TV streaming service. Though Google offers products like this to some extent, it has yet to offer the sort of cohesive package Apple does, which could make Google’s offerings less enticing for new customers and tempt Android users to jump ship to Apple.

Still, Android’s proliferation across devices at lower price points will continue to make it a popular choice for people on tighter budgets. And its presence on a huge number of devices from third-party manufacturers means it’s where we’ll see more innovation that seeks to answer the question of what role the smartphone plays in our lives.

A Fairphone opened up to show its components

With smartphone shipments expected to hit their lowest point in a decade, more companies will be looking for ways to use new, exciting technologies to capture an audience’s attention and present a product that serves up new ways of doing things. We’ll see this from Android and its partners and from Apple with the iPhone, its software and its peripheral devices, including new tech like Apple’s Vision Pro headset.

We’ll also see a bigger focus from all sides on sustainability: Apple, for instance, went to great lengths during its iPhone 15 launch event in September to flex its green credentials. While Samsung is making larger efforts in sustainability and smaller companies like Fairphone are using planet-friendly features as primary selling points, other manufacturers have yet to make sustainability a key part of their business model. It’s likely, then, that as consumers increasingly look toward sustainable options, the next major competition in the smartphone industry could be who can make the greenest product.

There’s no question that the development of both the software and hardware side of iOS and Android smartphones has at times happened almost in tandem, with one side launching a feature and the other responding in “me too!” fashion. And like the Williams sisters using their sporting rivalry to reach stratospheric new heights in tennis, Apple and Android will need to continue to embrace that spirit of competition to find new ways to succeed in an increasingly difficult market.

Ditch Fire TV’s Ads and Save 33% With This Roku Ultra Streaming Box

Following the news that Amazon is starting to display full-screen ads when owners turn on their Fire TV devices, you might be looking to ditch it in favor of something new. The Roku Ultra streaming box is one option and right now it’s available with a steep discount that makes it a great option to replace Amazon’s devices.

The Roku Ultra would normally sell for around $100 but if you place your order now for just $67, saving you a full third and a cool $33. You won’t have to work for that discount, either, with no on-screen coupons or discount codes in sight. And ironically, the retailer making it cheaper to get rid of your Amazon Fire TV device is Amazon itself.

The Roku Ultra is at the top end of Roku’s lineup and it has all of the features that you’re likely to need from such a streaming device. Those features include support for 4K streaming, not to mention HDR including Dolby Vision. There’s also support for Dolby Atmos for those with compatible audio systems as well.

That isn’t all, either. This Roku Ultra comes with a rechargeable Roky Voice Remote Pro which does more than let you control what you’re watching. By plugging in the included earbuds you’ll be able to watch your favorite shows without disturbing others, making the Roku Ultra the perfect solution for late-night bedroom TV viewing. The remote also includes quick-launch buttons for popular streaming services like Netflix, Apple TV Plus, Prime Video and Paramount Plus. All of this and more is yours for just $67, but the deal is unlikely to stick around for long — be sure to factor that into your buying decision before the price goes back up.
