  • Google Reveals Brand-New Android Logo and 3D Robot

Google has updated its Android logo and mascot, revealing a new 3D look for the robot.

A gif shows the Android robot going from its traditional green coloring to blue, yellow, rainbow and also wearing a hard hat, decorated as a disco ball and even covered in hair.

“The bugdroid — the face and most identifiable element of the Android robot — now appears with more dimension, and a lot more character,” Goole said Tuesday. “As a visual signifier of our brand, we wanted the bugdroid to appear as dynamic as Android itself.”

The full-body version of the bugdroid has also been 3D-ified, so that it can be “a versatile and reliable companion across channels, platforms and contexts,” Google said.

For the logo, “Android” now has a capital A and a rounder font to match the Google logo.

Android also has some new features, including one on its Lookout App that uses artificial intelligence to generate detailed descriptions of any images you open in the app, to make it more accessibility friendly for people who are blind or low-vision.

Google’s new Assistant at a Glance widget also uses AI, and will bring you information on your home screen “like high-precision weather alerts, dynamic travel updates and upcoming event reminders,” Google said in its blog post Tuesday.

Here are some other features for Android announced:

    • Google Wallet Pass photo import: so you can store any kind of ticket or pass with a barcode or QR code in your Google Wallet.
    • Zoom and Cisco’s Webex are coming to Android Auto.
    • Saying “Hey Google, good morning” will bring you a recap of your sleep stats from the night before.

Android 14 is set to be released this fall. Here’s how to download the beta version and all the big Android 14 features announced at Google I/O in May.

Google will also launch its new phone, the Pixel 8, on Oct. 4.

  • Starfield: Xbox Game Pass, Release Date and Everything Else You Should Know

Five years after it was announced, Starfield is finally available on both PC and Xbox Series consoles tonight. The new first-person space RPG from Bethesda Game Studios is filled to the brim with stuff to do, whether it’s hunting down bounties or developing your own outpost on a deserted planet.

Originally revealed in 2018, Starfield is one of Bethesda’s biggest games yet and already a contender for 2023’s Game of the Year. The game is also available on Xbox Game Pass starting tonight.

Here’s what you need to know about this epic space adventure.

    When does Starfield come out?

Starfield’s official launch date is technically Sept. 6, but the game will be available tonight in the US. Microsoft set the release time for 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT) on Sept. 5, which is 1 a.m. BST in the UK and 10 a.m. AEST in Australia on Sept. 6.

Those who preordered the Premium Edition or Constellation Edition of the game got to play the game on Friday, thanks to an early access preorder bonus.

    How much does Starfield cost?

Starfield Standard Edition costs $70. The Premium Edition comes with the Constellation Skin Pack, access to the Starfield Digital Artbook, original soundtrack and the Shattered Space story expansion that will arrive sometime after the game’s release, and it has a price tag of $100. Those who preordered the Standard Edition and decide they want to step up to the Premium Edition can pay $35 for the upgrade.

There’s also the Starfield Constellation Edition for $250 that comes with a Starfield Chronomark watch and watch case, but it sold out earlier in the year.

Is Starfield on Xbox Game Pass?

Yes. It will be available on Xbox Game Pass for consoles and PC when it launches tonight. Starfield will also make use of the Xbox Play Anywhere option that allows owners of a digital copy of the game to jump from Xbox to PC without needing to pay for both versions.

Xbox Game Pass is a monthly subscription with different tiers. A PC-only subscription costs $10 a month while an Xbox-only subscription is $11. To have access to both PC and Xbox games, along with cloud gaming, you’ll have to subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for $17 a month.

    What platforms is Starfield on?

Starfield will be released on the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, and on PC via Steam and the Windows Store.

    Can I preload Starfield?

Preload for Starfield on Xbox and PC started on Aug. 17.

    How big is Starfield?

For the Xbox Series X and S, Starfield requires slightly less than 140GB of hard drive space. The PC version needs 125GB of storage.

    What’s the story of Starfield?

Starfield takes place in 2330. Humanity has gone interstellar thanks to gravity engines that allow travel between planets and star systems.

Players take the role of a miner who’s given the basic job of gathering materials on a moon. It’s there you’ll come across an artifact that gives you a vision. It becomes apparent your character is special. The space adventure begins from there with more than 1,000 planets to explore.

How long does it take to beat Starfield?

Starfield’s main story missions take 17 hours to complete, according to HowLongToBeat.com. One speedrunner already completed the game in less than three hours, and that time will likely continue to get shorter as more people start playing the game.

    What Starfield-branded accessories are there?

Microsoft has released a Starfield Limited Edition Xbox Wireless controller for $80 and a Starfield Limited Edition Wireless Headset for $124. For those who want to give their Xbox Series X a new Starfield look, console wraps in the theme of the game are now available for preorder for $45, and will ship Nov. 10.

Other Starfield merchandise such as mugs, shirts and even skateboards are available at the Bethesda store.

  • Disney Yanks ESPN From Spectrum: What You Need to Know About the Channel Dispute

Spectrum subscribers across the United States have lost ESPN, FX, Freeform and all of Disney’s other programming. Turns out, Disney-owned channels have gone dark over a carriage dispute with Charter Communications, the company behind the Spectrum brand. This blackout caused viewers to miss out on parts of the U.S. Open and the kickoff for college football.

Ordinarily, Disney and Charter have an agreement on how much Charter will pay Disney in exchange for the right to broadcast its many channels. But as the two companies have been renegotiating the price of Disney’s programming, they’ve failed to reach an agreement. This breakdown led to Disney pulling its channels from the cable provider’s Spectrum service last week.

This included ESPN, one of the largest sports-broadcasting networks, meaning that because of the dispute, viewers missed out on the US Open and the kickoff of college football.

Read on to find out what you can do if you’re a Spectrum subscriber affected by Disney’s channels going dark.

    What are my options?

If you’re a Spectrum subscriber who’s missing some of your favorite content now that these channels have disappeared — and you just can’t wait for the dispute to be resolved — you’ve got some options. Almost all your favorite shows, news and sports are also available to stream.

Disney Plus will be able to provide viewers with all their beloved Disney programming. You’ll be able to catch children’s content that would ordinarily be found on the Disney Channel or Disney Junior, and more adult-focused programs that are on Freeform and FX. These shows won’t be airing live, though, so you might miss out on live premieres of your favorite shows. Disney Plus subscriptions start at $8 a month and can be canceled at any time.

If you’re missing news broadcasts, you could turn to over-the-air TV to get your fix of local news. You’ll need to purchase an antenna if you don’t have one and hook it up to your television, and then you’ll be able to access channels like ABC. You won’t have as many channels as you’d ordinarily get with cable TV, but if you’re just looking to watch your preferred local news broadcast, this could be a pretty solid fix.

If you’re a sports fan feeling the loss of ESPN, you’re also covered. There are plenty of sports streaming platforms that’ll keep you caught up on all your favorite teams and players.

The downside is that all these options cost money, on top of the cable service you’re already paying for. Companies generally are able to overcome these carriage disputes, though negotiation troubles in the past have led to weeks-long channel blackouts.

If this breakdown in communication is making you question your commitment to cable – you’ve got a handful live TV streaming services to consider. There are options like Hulu plus Live TV, Youtube TV and Sling, each offering different channel lineups and other features to consider.

When will my channels come back?

Though it’s hard to say when exactly the two companies will reach an agreement, it’s safe to assume they’re actively working on coming to a solution.

Charter has launched a website, called disneyespnfairdeal.com, about the carriage disagreement. On the site, Charter calls the pricing increase “excessive” and encourages subscribers to call on Disney to come to a deal.

In response to CNET’s request for comment, Charter said the “current video ecosystem is broken. With The Walt Disney Company, we have proposed a model that creates better alignment for the industry and better choices for our customers.” Despite its disagreement with Disney, Charter noted that it remains “hopeful for a path forward.”

Disney has also launched its own website in response to the disagreement, called keepmynetworks.com. Disney highlights “a highly successful track record of negotiating with providers of all types and sizes across the country” and says it’s “committed to reaching fair, market-based rates and terms.”

In response to CNET’s request for comment, Disney said, “Contrary to claims, we have offered Charter most favorable terms on rate, distribution, packaging, advertising and more.” Disney also said, “We value our relationship with Charter and we are ready to get back to the bargaining table as soon as possible.”

Fingers crossed it’s all sorted out before the NFL season kicks off on Sept. 7, with a matchup between the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs.

  • Work Faster With $200 Off the Mac Studio M2 Max

The Apple Mac Studio is a great computer for people who don’t want to live that laptop lifestyle. It’s a pro-level Mac that usually comes with a pro-level price, but right now it can be had for just $1,799, which is a big discount on the price you’d normally pay.

Order your new M2 Max Mac Studio from B&H Photo today and you’ll save $200 as part of the retailer’s 50th anniversary celebrations. It’s likely that this price won’t be available for long, so we’d definitely suggest ordering your new Mac Studio soon if you want to be certain of locking in this deal.

The configuration on offer here is the most recent, base-spec Mac Studio, but it’s by no means a slouch. Your $1,799 will get you a machine equipped with an M2 Max chip with a 12-core CPU and whopping 30-core graphics processor, with a 16-core Neural Engine included for good measure. The big numbers continue with 32GB of RAM as well as a 512GB solid-state drive.

This Mac Studio was built with advanced video and audio workflows in mind and it’s been optimized for work in Final Cut Pro, Compressor, DaVinci Resolve Studio and more. And because the Mac Studio uses Apple silicon, you’ll hardly ever hear this thing running — even during heavy workloads.

Whether you’re just starting out in the world of creative endeavors or are upgrading from an old Intel Mac, the Mac Studio could change the way you get work done. And we didn’t even mention that it can be a great machine for gaming.

  • Find Hidden Netflix Treasures With This Simple Trick

You may be one of the millions of Netflix users who’s streamed Suits during the past few months (despite the password crackdown), along with a variety of dramas and originals. While Netflix may tune in to your habits with movie and TV show recommendations that are spot on, it’s not always the best way to find something new to watch. There’s a chance you’re overlooking a few gems and niche genres. There’s also a chance those personalized suggestions are based on a profile you shared with someone.

You’re in luck, though. There’s a secret hack for filtering Netflix’s catalog by genre to find exactly what you’re searching for: Netflix codes. Learn how to use them to choose your own next binge-watch instead of accepting the algorithm’s suggestions.

    CNET Tech Tips logo

    What are Netflix codes?

Netflix codes are based on a number system that corresponds to a different genre or subgenre, which the algorithm uses to categorize and serve up recommendations. For example, instead of scrolling through Romance, search for movies using 8883, or 5475 (romantic comedies) for more specific results. You can also get into the hype surrounding code 9875, which will take you down a rabbit hole of true crime.

So far, Netflix has about 36,000 codes. Note that codes can only be used on Netflix’s website and not in its apps.

    netflix-codes-1

Where do I find Netflix’s secret menu?

Check out netflix-codes.com for a full list. There are about 20 categories like anime, foreign movies and classic movies. Those categories are broken down into more specific subgenres. For example, horror movies — coded 8711 — houses 12 more codes like deep-sea horror movies, zombie horror movies, teen screams and more.

How do I use Netflix codes?

The easiest way is by installing the Better Browse for Netflix extension for Chrome. Here’s how:

    1. Go to the Chrome Web Store and search “Better Browse for Netflix.”
    2. Click Add to Chrome.
    3. Click Add Extension.
    4. Log into your Netflix account in a new tab.

At the top of the Netflix home screen, you should see a new option — Browse All — next to My List. Click that to search manually or scroll through the subgenres available.

    netflix-codes-2

Another way is through the Netflix codes website. Here’s how:

    1. Visit netflix-codes.com in your PC or mobile browser.
    2. Find the genre or subgenre you want to explore.
    3. Tap the code next to the genre or subgenre you want.
    4. If you’re on a device that has the Netflix app installed, the app should open and take you directly to the genre or subgenre you chose. If you don’t have the app installed, it’ll open Netflix through the browser and you can view the specific movies and shows available.
    5. Tap the title you want to watch.

You can also use the Netflix codes manually in your browser. Here’s how:

    1. Visit netflix-codes.com in your PC or mobile browser.
    2. Find the genre or subgenre you want to explore.
    3. In another tab, type in http://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/INSERTNUMBER, but replace INSERTNUMBER with the specific genre or subgenre code.
    4. You’ll be taken to Netflix to peruse the titles available in that section.

From there, you can either make a mental note of the movie you want to watch and go back to the app on your preferred device, or log in to watch in your browser.

  • Trouble Placing Your iPhone Cursor? Learn How to Use the iOS Hidden Keyboard Trackpad

Despite the many cool features packed into your iPhone, the one iOS feature that tends to get the most complaints is the stock keyboard. Some complain about sluggishness and others about the odd placement of the period when typing in Safari, but one consistent source of frustration is difficulty placing the cursor when trying to type or edit text.

The conventional method of tapping and holding your finger down on the screen to bring up a magnifying bubble can be frustrating when you can’t get the cursor to go exactly where you want. Luckily, there’s another way to move the cursor when typing in iOS, and it works even if you’re running an older software version, like iOS 15.

Read on to learn how to unlock and use your iPhone’s hidden trackpad.

For more, check out how to fix the most annoying features and settings on your iPhone.

A phone keyboard with blank keys

How to bring up the secret trackpad on an iPhone or iPad

Here’s how to discover the hidden trackpad on an iOS device.

1.Anywhere you’ve written a block of text, bring up your keyboard and press and hold your finger down on the space key until the keyboard goes blank. You should feel a bit of haptic feedback and see the cursor enlarge for a second, which means you can now use the keyboard as a trackpad.

2.With your finger still pressed down, move it around the entire keyboard to move your cursor, just like you would on your Mac’s trackpad.

    3. To place the cursor, simply lift your finger off the screen. You can then use any of the other keys, like Delete, to make any edits in the text. If you want to move the cursor once again, press your finger down on the space key to bring up the hidden trackpad.

  • Here Are the Best Game Subscription Services

Just like movies and television, gaming streaming services have taken over. Every gaming platform has at least one, with Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo building their gaming subscription servicesaround multiplayer and a library of playable titles.

That’s right, even if you aren’t interested in a digital gaming library, it might be more cost-effective to subscribe to one just to access things like multiplayer — and you might even find a new favorite game along the way.

With cloud gaming and the PC version of Xbox Game Pass, subscriptions are a big part of PC gaming, but not yet the default. It helps that PC gamers can buy games a la carte from a variety of shops (Steam, GOG and so on), which means individual games are often discounted.

    White Xbox and PS5 controllers.

And if content subscriptions are the future of gaming, then cloud gaming subscriptions are the future of that future, as they require almost no specialized hardware, and generally work anywhere, from an iPad to a cheap Chromebook. For this roundup, we’re including both download and cloud-based subscription services.

That said, the road to cloud gaming isn’t always a smooth one. Google shut down its Stadia service in January. And the very first cloud-gaming service, On Live, started in 2010 and shut down in 2015.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate remains the gold standard, offering a catalog of games across console, PC and cloud (which works on practically any device). But Sony has revamped its PlayStation Plus service to be much closer to what Microsoft offers.

The top tier of services includes:

    • Xbox Game Pass Ultimate
    • PlayStation Plus
    • Nintendo Switch Online
    • GeForce Now
    • Apple Arcade

    Other players include:

    • EA Play
    • Ubisoft Plus
    • Google Play Pass
    • Amazon Luna
    • Amazon Prime Gaming

    Also tested

    EA Play

For $5 to $15 a month, you get access to a catalog of EA games, but EA Play is also included in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

    Ubisoft Plus

For $15 a month, you get access to Ubisoft games as a stand-alone PC subscription, or as a paid add-on to Stadia or Luna, and eventually Xbox.

    Google Play Pass

Like Apple Arcade, the Google version for Android phones includes lots of games, but also other apps. It works on Android devices only.

    Amazon Luna/Prime Gaming

Luna is Amazon’s cloud-based service, like Stadia, that offers different catalogs for between $5 and $18 a month. Prime members can stream some games at no additional cost, and also get access to “a rotating selection” of full downloadable games. Amazon also owns Twitch, so there’s deep built-in integration for streamers.

    Stadia

Google’s cloud-based service is no more, but you can still go back and read our launch review of Google Stadia.

It’s a tenkeyless model that’s around 65% smaller than a full-size keyboard, which means it’s small enough to toss in your backpack and take just about anywhere.
