  • Streaming Hits a New High This Summer. Here Are the Services You’re Watching Most

Streaming viewership beat out traditional TV platforms to hit a new record high in July, Nielsen reported Tuesday. While broadcast TV and cable snagged 20% and 29.6% of viewership respectively, streaming accounted for 38.7% of TV usage for the month. A surge in June — which Nielsen attributes to kids’ summer break — highlighted a trend that saw streaming outpace all other TV platforms by at least 6% of viewership share.

Per Nielsen, for kids ages 2 to 17, “non-traditional TV options accounted for 90% of their increased usage,” with streaming making up 62% of that bump for those ages 2 to 11. However, they’re not the only ones enjoying what’s on TV, with adults turning to Netflix, Tubi and other services this season.

New releases and children’s programming helped pushed streaming services to the top, with shows like Prime Video’s Jack Ryan, Bluey on Disney Plus and Suits on Netflix contributing to the increase. Nielsen reports that three services reached “all-time high” status — YouTube, Netflix and Prime Video — while gaming consoles make up the “other streaming” category.

  • Apple Maps Is Getting This Google Maps Feature Next Month

Say goodbye to the days of losing access to your iPhone’s GPS because you’re driving through a no-signal zone. Next month, your iPhone is finally getting a new feature that Android users have had for years. With the iOS 17 update, Apple Maps users will be able to use the GPS offline (if they have a compatible iPhone).

This isn’t the only update coming with Apple’s newest software. Electric-vehicle owners will also soon be able to see real-time charging availability via Apple Maps.

    How do offline maps work?

The iPhone is getting offline maps for its Maps app this year. That means you’ll be able to access any map you’ve downloaded, even if you don’t have Wi-Fi or a cell signal. For instance, if you’re going on a trip, you can download the route and access it without using cellular data. This is helpful if you’re low on data or if your route takes you through an area with little to no signal that would cause the Maps app to stop navigating correctly, potentially causing you to veer off course.

What can you do with Apple Maps offline?

When iOS 17 becomes available, you’ll be able to download designated areas and access turn-by-turn navigation while using Maps offline. Also, you’ll be able to see your estimated time of arrival and find places in Maps, among other things.

When will iPhone’s offline maps be available?

Offline maps will be available on iPhone with the launch of iOS 17, which is coming this fall. (It usually arrives in late September with the new iPhone.) You’ll want to make sure your iPhone is compatible with Apple’s latest software. If it isn’t, you won’t have access to this new feature.

What else is changing with Apple Maps?

Maps will make it easier to find thousands of trails in parks across the US. The app will also support drivers of electric vehicles with real-time charging availability information. This can be filtered by charging network and plug type, among other things. EV owners with compatible vehicles will also be able to designate a preferred charging network.

What else did Apple announce at WWDC? The company unveiled MacOS Sonoma, as well as the new 15-inch MacBook Air and the Vision Pro VR headset. Apple showed off a feature that will let you turn your photos into stickers with its Messages app in iOS 17. Also, changes are coming to the autocorrect feature in iOS 17, and Apple unveiled iPadOS 17 and WatchOS 10.

  • Samsung Brings New Z Flip 5, Z Fold 5 Features to Older Foldable Devices

Samsung’s older Z Flip and Z Fold phones are about to be able to perform a few new tricks. On Tuesday, the company said features from its operating system update One UI 5.1.1, which debuted with its new Z Flip 5 and Fold 5, will begin trickling down to older phones, starting with the Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 this month.

The rollout suggests Samsung wants to create a consistent experience across its Z Flip and Z Fold phones as it seeks to make foldable phones mainstream. The announcement follows Samsung’s Unpacked event in late July, where the company introduced the Galaxy Z Flip 5, the Z Fold 5, the Galaxy Watch 6 series and the Galaxy Tab S9 family.

The updates are minor changes that should add some polish to the Z Flip’s and Z Fold’s software experience in Flex Mode. This mode enables apps to shift to the top portion of the screen when the Flip or Fold is folded halfway, while displaying device controls on the bottom portion of the display.

With the update, Samsung is hoping to improve the way buttons and controls appear on the screen’s bottom half, so they’re easier to reach and customize. Flip and Fold owners will be able to show or hide Flex Mode controls on the bottom screen, and the media play button will also appear in this panel when streaming videos.

Samsung says that in addition to arriving on the Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 this month, the update will come to the Z Fold 3, Z Flip 3, Z Fold 2 and Z Flip. However, it didn’t specify a time frame for these devices. These additions fall in line with Samsung’s tendency to support older devices with new software. For example, it provides its phones with four generations of Android updates while its rivals typically offer only three.

Samsung is also expanding new software features from the Galaxy Tab S9 series and Galaxy Watch 6 family to older tablets and smartwatches. For the tablets, this includes two-handed drag-and-drop and the ability to more easily switch between Samsung’s pop-up and multi-window modes. Pop-up window opens an app in a smaller window, while multi-window is Samsung’s version of split-screen mode. There’s also an upgraded task bar that lets you access up to four recent apps.

These features will arrive on the Galaxy Tab S8 family, Tab S7 family, Tab S6 Lite, Tab A8, Tab A7 Lite, Tab Active 3 and Tab Active 4 Pro. The new tablet features should work on the Galaxy Z Fold 4 as well.

Galaxy Watch 5, Watch 5 Pro, Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic users will get an updated user interface with more-detailed sleep data, personalized heart rate zones, a new mode for recording runs on tracks, and support for running and walking in the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro’s Route Workout mode, among other features. Notifications of irregular heart rhythm are also arriving on the Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 4 series.

The updates are another sign that tech giants are delivering more meaningful new features through software as hardware upgrades have felt less dramatic year-over-year. The biggest update in the Galaxy S23 series, for example, is the Ultra model’s 200-megapixel camera sensor, while the S23 and S23 Plus received modest updates to performance and battery life.

Apple has taken a similar approach, particularly with the Apple Watch, which gained useful updates like low power mode and a suite of new workout features in last year’s WatchOS 9 update.

By bringing fresh updates to older devices, Samsung is putting more emphasis on software, hoping to breathe new life into aging products as it continues its efforts to establish a device ecosystem that rivals Apple’s. That’s especially important with devices that are as expensive as Samsung’s Z Flip and Z Fold, which start at $1,000 and $1,800 respectively.

How to watch the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 online from anywhere using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view the tournament locally, you may need a different way to watch this match — that’s where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds on game day by encrypting your traffic, and it’s also a great idea if you’re traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you’re able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the game. Most VPNs, like our Editors’ Choice, ExpressVPN, make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Australia, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you’re streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

Quick tips for streaming the 2023 Women’s World Cup using a VPN

    • With four variables at play — your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN — your experience and success when streaming the Women’s World Cup action live may vary.
    • If you don’t see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the “search for city or country” option.
    • If you’re having trouble getting the game after you’ve turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs — like Roku — don’t have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you’ll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you’re using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
    • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network’s sports app, you’ll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
    • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you’re using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend Brave.

  • Onyx Boox Tab Ultra C Review: At Last, a Color E Ink Tablet

I don’t want to brag, but I’ve just spent a fair amount of time with the Holy Grail for E Ink enthusiasts: a color E Ink tablet. That’s right — after many years of waiting and hoping, E Ink lovers can finally get their hands on a 10.3-inch color E Ink tablet with an included stylus, the Onyx Boox Tab Ultra C. And although it might cost $600, it could be worth every penny for comic, manga and graphic-novel lovers. Not a fan of comics? You’ll still find plenty to love here for school or on the job as a productivity device that’s not all about games and video.

The Boox Tab Ultra C may be a color tablet, but it’s otherwise the same type of E Ink display as e-readers like a Kindle or a Kobo. The Ultra C is the first device to use E Ink’s newest Kaleido 3 color screen, which utilizes an RGB filter array over a black-and-white paper film to create over 4,000 different colors. Despite the colors, the screen is designed mostly for reading, writing and note-taking in a low-distraction environment. While you can technically play games, surf the web and watch movies on this device, that’s not the point here.

Boox Tab Ultra C color e-reader

The tablet doesn’t even use backlighting for illumination and is instead equipped with adjustable warm and cool LED front lights — which is great for reading at night, but horrible for watching movies. In other words, the Tab Ultra C utilizes a totally different technology from your typical tablet and isn’t intended to be used like one. That seems like enough of a fair warning. Moving on…

    Design and display

The Boox Tab Ultra C has more in common with its colorless sibling, the Boox Tab Ultra, than it does with an iPad. Both versions of the Tab Ultra feature a sleek metallic design, giving the devices a premium feel.

Boox Tab Ultra C color e-reader

Both models come loaded with a speedy advanced Qualcomm octa-core processor, along with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Both offer battery life that measures in weeks, not days — though the Tab Ultra C and its color display tends to need more frequent charging, depending on use. Both Tab Ultra models also include a 16-megapixel rear camera and a fingerprint sensor, and they run on the Android 11 operating system with full access to the apps on the Google Play store. They’re also compatible with the $110 Boox Tab Ultra Keyboard case, which offers an excellent typing experience for those looking to up their E Ink productivity.

So yes, it’s the color E Ink display that separates the Tab Ultra C not only from its sibling, but also from all other E Ink tablets on the market. The Ultra C offers color at 150 pixels per inch and black-and-white text at 300 ppi. For comparison, most other E Ink tablets — including the original Tab Ultra — can only muster 227 ppi on a black-and-white screen with zero capacity for color. The result is a unique display that pushes the boundaries of the entire category.

The color on the Tab Ultra C isn’t particularly vibrant and looks nothing like what you’d find on a phone or a traditional tablet. Instead, it has a muted, print-like quality reminiscent of color pictures in a newspaper — and that’s exactly the point. The device is not meant to render websites or videos in full, accurate color, but to give life to books, comics or any other documents that rely on still images. In fact, the Tab Ultra C might be the best digital device for graphic novels and comics that’s ever been created.

Getting into comics on devices can be hard for me because the screen never quite works for the content. The screen is either too big or too small to hold and read on comfortably. But I didn’t feel that way at all on the Tab Ultra C. I read the first installment of the Sandman graphic novels by Neil Gaiman, and it was a completely pleasurable experience. The colors appeared as if they’d been printed directly onto the page, and the 10.3-inch screen meant I didn’t need to crop, scan or zoom into the document to see the entire page at a legible size.

Boox Tab Ultra C color e-reader next to its black and white sibling

The experience wasn’t entirely flawless. I needed to play around with the E Ink settings in order to manage screen flickering and ghosting — issues that plague all E Ink devices. Thankfully, Boox makes it easy to access those settings by swiping down from the upper-right corner of the device. There you’ll find five presets that automatically alter the screen’s refresh rate depending on which you choose. The settings menu also lets you adjust the dark color, the vividness and the color brightness of the text. I found the middle setting — Fast Mode — was the sweet spot for smooth page-turning and minimal ghosting. Boox warns that the faster your refresh mode, the more detail you’ll lose in the image, but I didn’t notice any change in image quality while reading my book.

I can’t say the same for videos. Yes, you can watch them on the Tab Ultra C, but trust me — you don’t want to. The tablet has access to the internet through its own NeoBrowser. Once again, webpages have a newspaper-like quality to them, with duller and more pixelated images compared to those found on LCD screens. Videos look a little like a colorized version of old newsreels that played before movies during World War II.

There’s a fair amount of ghosting and pixelation, even when the tablet is on the Ultra-Fast E Ink setting. It’s nice to have the capacity to watch videos in a pinch, like when you’re studying and need to watch a quick YouTube video to refresh your memory on content while looking at your notes. But the Boox really isn’t built for that purpose. You can play games on it too, but please, don’t bother.

    Apps and software

Boox Tab Ultra C color e-reader displaying the Google Play store.

The Boox, like all E Ink tablets, is best suited to reading and writing, and its software, though based on Android 11, has plenty of its own native features. The built-in reading app offers a true smorgasbord of customization options; it’s not just font-size adjustments here. There are sliders for bolding the text, enhancing the sharpness, shifting individual word spacing and line and paragraph spacing. If you really want to go wild, there are even dark-color enhancement, watermark bleaching and image-smoothing options.

Boox turns both Ultras into true productivity devices with features I could’ve only dreamed of having in college. You can view two different documents at once or take handwritten notes on one doc while reading in another, for example — perfect for class notes or homework. And then you can export all your notes through integration with Dropbox, Evernote, Google Drive or OneDrive. Or you can use Boox’s own syncing service that comes with 10GB of free storage.

All options are easy to use and set up, but I was impressed with how simple it was to use the BooxDrop app to wirelessly drag and drop files from my computer to the device. All I had to do was log into the website on my computer while both it and the Boox device were connected to the same Wi-Fi network. All my notes appeared instantly on my computer and could easily be transferred between the two devices. There are plenty of other third-party applications that do the same thing, but it’s good to know that the device’s native solution works just as well.

Boox Tab Ultra C color e-reader

In fact, Boox’s native note-taking app is just as impressive. It comes with over 30 templates for work, study, math, music and more. It’s the only notebook app I’ve encountered that rivals the note-taking options on the ReMarkable 2 E Ink tablet. It has a full set of robust features, including the ability to add shapes, layers and links. You can also handwrite notes in five different pen types and a plethora of colors. You can even add audio recording to make sure you don’t miss a thing. Oh, and you can also convert your handwriting to text at the push of a button. These notebooks are clearly made for people who need to take detailed, high-quality notes, and I’d feel incredibly confident in using them for classes or other important meetings.

The included pen comes with 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity and charges wirelessly when it’s magnetically attached to the tablet. The screen doesn’t have a pen-on-paper feel and is instead similar to writing on an iPad or other LCD tablet. There’s no lag between your handwriting and the ink on the page — at least in Boox’s apps — which makes it useful, if not entirely pleasurable.

Most third-party apps on the Google Play store are, unfortunately, unable to take advantage of Boox’s pen. For example, you can access all of your Kindle content on the Kindle app — and even take notes with an onscreen keyboard — but you won’t be able to take advantage of your pen to write directly on your books. This is slightly disappointing, but unsurprising given that Amazon’s own Kindle Scribe, which also includes a pen, can only take handwritten notes on a sticky-note app instead of directly on the page.

I wish there were more third-party options to take advantage of the Ultra’s unique capabilities, but I’m grateful to have access to all of my reading apps in one place. I can access all my documents in Google Docs, read my library books on Libby, and browse all the latest comics on Marvel Unlimited. No other E Ink tablet offers access to all these reading options — and certainly not with color.

    Expensive but worth it

Boox Tab Ultra C color e-reader

Ultimately, the Boox Tab Ultra C is in many ways the epitome of E Ink technology. It offers an impressive array of features with a display that transforms the device into a premium tablet that is more than the sum of its parts. It’s far from a perfect product, though: the hardware could be better integrated with third-party software and the color display, though picturesque, could be brighter and more vivid (though these could be limitations of the current technology). That said, I’ve found the Tab Ultra C is one of the most useful E Ink tablets I’ve ever laid hands on, after years of testing these devices. It’s expensive, and for some, an iPad will be the better choice for the money. But for a productivity device that does a little bit of everything — and excels at PDFs, books, comics and note-taking — this is an easy recommendation.

Lionel Messi: How to Watch, Stream Philadelphia Union vs. Inter Miami on MLS Season Pass Today

Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami head north tonight to take on Philadelphia Union, with a place in the Leagues Cup final at stake for the winner.

The Argentine forward comes into this clash having so far lived up to his superstar billing, notching up an impressive eight goals and one assist since joining the MLS side from Paris Saint-Germain in June. Subscriptions to Apple’s MLS Season Pass have reportedly doubled since the World Cup winner arrived in south Florida.

Tuesday’s fixture looks set to be Messi’s toughest test yet since making his Stateside switch, however, as Miami prepare to face a Philadelphia side that finished last season atop the Eastern Conference and as MLS Cup runners-up.

Philadelphia edged past Mexican side Querétaro with a 2-1 win to set up this evening’s fixture, while Miami reached the semifinals after a resounding 4-0 win over Charlotte last week.

The winner of tonight’s game will face either Monterrey or Nashville SC in the inaugural final of this new cross-border knockout tournament on Saturday.

Kickoff for Tuesday’s match is set for 7 p.m. ET (4 p.m. PT) and will stream on Apple TV’s MLS Season Pass. Here’s everything you need to know on how to watch.

Lionel Messi’s next game: Where and when is Philadelphia Union vs. Inter Miami CF?

This Leagues Cup fixture is set to take place at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, Aug. 15. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET, 4 p.m. PT in the US and Canada. That makes it a 12 a.m. BST start in the UK and a 9 a.m. AEST kickoff in Australia on Wednesday morning.

How can I watch Messi’s MLS and Leagues Cup games?

Apple TV now has a 10-year deal with Major League Soccer and is the exclusive broadcaster of every MLS game in the 2023 season, plus Leagues Cup fixtures, in most parts of the world via its MLS Season Pass service.

That means you’ll need an Apple TV Plus or MLS Season Pass subscription to watch this game live.

In the US, MLS Season Pass costs $13 a month or $79 for the season if you’re already a subscriber to the Apple TV Plus streaming service. If you don’t subscribe to Apple TV Plus, the MLS Season Pass costs $15 a month or $99 for the season.

MLS Season Pass subscriptions are also available in more than 100 other countries, including Canada, Mexico, the UK and Australia. For prices outside the US, check here.

You can watch the games on any device that has the Apple TV app, including TVs, phones, tablets and computers. This includes iPhones, iPads, Apple TVs and Macs, as well as smart TVs and streaming devices that run the Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV and Google TV platforms.

If you have a game console, there’s an Apple TV app for Microsoft’s Xbox One and Xbox Series S and X, and Sony’s PlayStation 4 and PS5. Recent TVs from Samsung, LG, Sony and Vizio also have Apple TV apps. More details on supported devices can be found on Apple’s site.

Though Apple doesn’t have Apple TV apps for Android phones and tablets or Windows computers, it does let you stream its shows and MLS games using a web browser by going to tv.apple.com.

The StanbyMe Go is a display and entertainment center packed into a svelte suitcase that you can take with you. The 27-inch, 1080p resolution LED screen is attached to a swivel, so you can raise the screen up, prop it at an angle, put it in table mode and then pack it up again.

The 20-watt speaker it comes with adapts to the screen’s rotation and provides surround sound with Dolby Atmos, according to LG, along with Dolby Vision technology. There are compartments inside the case to hold its accessories, and a battery that’s already built-in. In terms of battery life, there’s about three hours of viewing time between charges.

It has an HDMI input so you could plug in a gaming console if you had another power source nearby, and it can display content from Apple devices via AirPlay. A built-in app store gives you access to games you can play in table mode, like chess, and streaming apps such as Netflix, Disney Plus, Prime Video and Max.

“Content viewing is no longer confined to the living room or even the home, but until now, consumers have had to sacrifice screen size in favor of portability,” David Park, head of HE product marketing at LG, said in a press release.

The StanbyMe Go is available for preorder for $1,000 on LG’s website. If you order the new portable touchscreen by Aug. 27, you’ll get a free XBoom 360 Bluetooth speaker, a $200 value.

Preorders are expected to start shipping the week of Aug. 28.

  • YouTube Cracks Down on Cancer Treatment Misinformation

YouTube Cracks Down on Cancer Treatment Misinformation

YouTube is no stranger to having to deal with misinformation on its platform. Now, the video-sharing site says it’s stepping up enforcement of its medical misinformation policies and will begin removing false info about cancer treatments.

YouTube will begin cracking down on videos that promote cancer treatments proven to be harmful or ineffective, the company said Tuesday. It will also remove content that discourages people from seeking professional medical treatment.

The removal of this medical misinformation will start Tuesday and ramp up in the coming weeks, YouTube said.

The crackdown is part of an effort to update and simplify YouTube’s medical misinformation policies. Going forward, the company will “streamline dozens of our existing medical misinformation guidelines to fall under three categories – Prevention, Treatment, and Denial.” YouTube will remove content that contradicts health authority guidance on the prevention, transmission and treatment of certain health conditions, or videos that deny the existence of specific diseases such as COVID-19.

“Our goal is to make the rules of the road clearer and have a more transparent framework in place for evaluating whether certain diseases or conditions would be included in the future,” reads a post from YouTube Vice President Matt Halprin and Global Head of Healthcare Dr. Garth Graham.

If you come across medical misinformation on YouTube you can report the video. The platform has a “Report” button located on every video and “Misinformation” is an option available when reporting. These kinds of reports will require a timestamp and a description of what false info the video contains.

YouTube has struggled to contain videos with medical misinformation, especially since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the last two years, YouTube broadened its ban on vaccine misinformation, while also removing videos about unsafe abortion methods.
