  • The Best PSVR Games That Still Aren’t on PSVR 2

The Best PSVR Games That Still Aren’t on PSVR 2

The PlayStation VR2 is still a way away, but there are plenty of PSVR games you can play right now on the PlayStation 5. You’ll need the original PlayStation VR headset to play them.

The PSVR has held on as a surprisingly good doorway to a wide collection of the best VR games. It includes a number of Sony exclusives. So while you wait for the PlayStation VR2, you can hook up the existing PSVR to the PS5 and enjoy VR games. Some of them even benefit from better load times and graphics, too.

    ps5-psvrps5-psvr

The PlayStation VR lives on with the PS5… and a few extra accessories.

    Scott Stein/CNET

Some words of advice: The PSVR headset is older tech that requires a complex, cabled box and an older PS4 camera, which will plug into the PS5 with an extra dongle adapter you’ll have to get from Sony. Also, most PSVR games won’t work with the new PS5 DualSense controller (with a few exceptions, like Star Wars Squadrons). For most gamepad games, you’ll need to dig up an older PS4-era DualShock 4.

Sony’s PSVR has other optional gear, too: wand-like PS Move controllers (which you need for some games) and a light-gun-like VR Aim controller. For the sake of keeping this list simple, I left off games that only work with those; below are some excellent titles that just need a DualShock 4 to work.

Also, a lot of these games also can work without a PSVR headset. They’re VR optional, but the headset adds a different level of immersion that’s often really compelling, with the downside of a lower-res display than you’d get on a 4K TV.

    Media Molecule

Media Molecule’s browsable world of user-created things is impossible to explain, but you could build your own VR dreamscape here. Or explore others. Dreams will function without a VR headset, but VR just adds a whole new dimension to discover.

A pretty great Star Wars dogfighting game without a VR headset becomes even better with one. You can use your DualSense controller, since this game doesn’t track the controller’s motion in space.

The best Sony VR exclusive game, and a must-play if you get a PSVR headset. The same team that made Astro’s Playroom — the game that’s baked into your PS5 that shows off the amazing tricks of the DualSense controller — also made this showcase for the PSVR headset. It plays like a wonderful VR version of a Mario-type platformer. I like it even more than Astro’s Playroom.

An art piece exploration puzzle game involving fantastic alien worlds, impossibly strange creatures and a simple interface that will have you exploring what to do. It’s a great game to soak in some atmosphere. And really, it’s so strange — and beautiful.

    Sony Interactive Entertainment

Sony’s PS4 edition of the classic hovercar racing franchise works beautifully in VR, and it won’t make you too nauseous. The benefit of VR ends up being mainly about focus. (Sony’s Driveclub is another option.)

An infinite sci-fi space exploration game that’s gotten consistently better with age, No Man’s Sky now has VR support for the entire game (if you play the PS4 version). Recent updates have optimized graphics and load times, too. Again, you can also play this without a headset, or switch back and forth.

iOS 16.4 Will Bring These New Emoji to Your iPhone

Your iPhone already has thousands of emoji, but you’ll soon get more — 31 more, to be exact. The iOS 16.4 betas include new iPhone emoji that beta testers can use. And as soon as iOS 16.4 becomes available to the general public, others will be able to use them, too.

The new emoji include a shaking-head smiley, animals like a donkey, moose and a goose, and additional heart colors, including plain pink and light blue. The plain pink heart has been a long-sought emoji, according to Emojipedia, which named it one of the site’s top emoji requests in 2015. Last year’s significant emoji drop in iOS 15.4 included a melting face, a biting lip and a pregnant man, with 37 new designs in total.

There isn’t any word yet on when the new emoji will be available across iOS devices, and the designs of the new emoji might change between now and their final release on iOS.

  • Best Samsung Galaxy S22, S22 Plus and S22 Ultra Cases for 2023

Best Samsung Galaxy S22, S22 Plus and S22 Ultra Cases for 2023

The updated Galaxy S23 was just released in February, becoming the latest in a long line of outstanding phones. But just because the Galaxy S22 series is no longer Samsung’s flagship lineup, there’s no need to worry. The S22 series are all excellent phone options, featuring powerful hardware and cutting-edge displays. These state-of-the-art devices remain some of the best Android phones out there, but that doesn’t mean the devices are impervious to drops, dings and scratches. That makes it all the more crucial to protect your investment with a good case. But with so many options available, deciding which case is right for you may prove to be a bit difficult.

Finding a case the right price for your budget is important, and there are many affordable cases out there, but there are also added features and functions you’ll want to consider when looking at cases as well. And make sure you get the correct model when shopping for cases — even the best S22 Ultra case is going to be too big for the base S22 phone, for instance. So what are some features to watch for while shopping for protective cases and which offer top-notch protection? Your phone model and how you use your phone may determine whether you want a rugged case or one with a slim and lightweight profile.

For example, the best S22 Ultra case options might include a kickstand, which is helpful because the phone is quite hefty. A slim case might be best for the smaller S22 Plus (with a 6.6-inch screen), which we like to refer to as the middle child in the S22 lineup, as well as the standard S22 (6.1 inches), which is the most “compact” of the trio. A case with card slots or rugged protection might work best for your phone, or even a case that helps extend your battery life.

Everybody has their own opinions about which features make up the best Samsung case — and the best case for phones in general. Ultimately, the best protection depends on your unique needs. That’s why my picks come in a variety of styles, from clear to opaque ones, and from slimmer models to more rugged armor cases and folio wallet cases.

Note that some of the recommendations for these Galaxy S22 series cases are based on my experience using nearly identical models with preceding Galaxy smartphones, as well as iPhones. The cases below are listed at the starting price for the line, so make sure you’re buying the case that matches your S22. The same goes for tempered glass for extra protection — match the size to the specific model of your S22.

Without further ado, here are some of the best S22 Ultra case, Plus case and standard case options. I regularly update this best Samsung case roundup with new picks as more candidates arrive.

Leading case maker Speck brings a selection of protective case options to the Galaxy S22, including (from left to right in picture above) the Presidio Perfect-Clear Ombre, Presidio2 Grip and Presidio Perfect-Clear.

All the new models have very good drop protection (13 to 16 feet, depending on the model) as well as Speck’s Microban antimicrobial coating. The cases start at around $20 in various color options. Sometimes Speck offers discounts to first-time buyers on its site.

    Gear4

You’re receiving price alerts for Gear4 Cases

British case-maker Gear4, now owned by Zagg, makes cases that are right there with OtterBox and Speck. They’re all lined with the company’s D3O shock-absorbing material and feature beveled edges to protect your phone. Shown here from left to right are the Copenhagen (13-foot drop protection), Denali (16-foot drop protection), Milan (13-foot drop protection) and Crystal Palace (13-foot drop protection). All use some recycled plastic in their construction, but the Copenhagen, made out of 52% plant-based material, is technically the most eco-friendly.

Prices range from $30 to $50 for the top-end Denali, which is the Gear4 case I probably like best, though it’s currently on sale for just $10, along with several other options

    Amazon

You’re receiving price alerts for Spigen Cases

If you’re looking for a cheap clear case for your new Galaxy S22, Spigen’s Ultra Hybrid is a good value at around $15 to $17, depending on the version you get. I like the Ultra Hybrid S (second from the left in photo), which has an integrated kickstand. The Neo Hybrid, on the far right, is a fairly basic case, while the Cryo Armor (second from right) is a $22 triple layer “gaming” case that’s designed to “absorb and dissipate heat from your phone during hours of gameplay.”

No drop rating is listed for these Samsung phone cases, but most Spigen cases, except for the slimmest models, offer reasonable protection. If you want a tough case with decent protection, get one of its Armor models.

Note that a lot of these cheaper clear cases have a habit of turning yellow and degrading over time, which makes them less translucent. But they’re cheap enough that you probably won’t mind shelling out for a replacement if and when that happens.

    Amazon

    $26 at Amazon

You’re receiving price alerts for OtterBox Commuter Series

The company’s super protective Defender series case is available for all the Galaxy S22 models, but most people want something less bulky. I like the Symmetry series cases — they’re slim with beveled edges, making them a good mix of sleek and protective. That said, I’ve come to like the more protective Commuter Series better, thanks to the grips it has on the back and sides, as well as having raised edges on the front that should help protect your screen. The raised bezel acts as a screen protector to keep your screen scratch-free and the camera module gets the same treatment.

You’re receiving price alerts for Rokform S22 Rugged Case

Rokform’s been making tough smartphone cases for years and aside from their durability, their key feature is the ability to use them with various mounts — including bike, car and motorcycle mounts — that are sold separately.

Rokform’s cases have removable magnets and they’re compatible with wireless charging if you remove the included center magnet. “With the lower magnet still intact, you can still wireless-charge while utilizing magnetic mounting and all of our mounts,” Rokform says.

Available in a few color options, Raptic’s Shield case costs less than competing premium cases from Speck and OtterBox and is a pretty good value overall. It has 10-foot drop protection, as well as an antimicrobial treatment.

    Samsung

You’re receiving price alerts for Samsung Clear Standing Cover

Samsung’s Clear Standing Cover isn’t anything fancy but it’s a protective clear case that has an integrated kickstand. You can prop your phone up horizontally or vertically using the kickstand, which seems sturdy (it’s larger than Spigen’s integrated kickstand). Alas, it’s currently out of stock but will hopefully ship soon.

Available in black, burgundy and light gray, Samsung’s leather case offers a nice soft-to-the-touch feel with decent edge protection in a slim package. Alas, there’s no kickstand, but if you’re looking for a clean, elegantly designed case, this Samsung-branded case fits the bill. It also offers decent protection for the camera lenses on the back. I personally like the burgundy color.

You’re receiving price alerts for Otterbox Strada

When you have a phone with a large screen, it can be a good idea to get some added screen protection with a folio case that also has slots for a couple of credit cards. Otterbox’s folio case, the Strada, is nicely designed with a magnetic clasp. Its only drawback is that it doesn’t convert into a kickstand for watching videos. It’s only available in black for now.

Otterbox also makes the Strada Via folio, but I prefer this model.

    David Carnoy/CNET

    $18 at Amazon

You’re receiving price alerts for Cyrill Cases

Cyrill is a sub-brand of Spigen and like Spigen, its cases generally sell for less than $20. Cyrill doesn’t have quite the same selection for the Galaxy S22 as it does for the iPhone 13, but it has some protective clear cases with floral designs (pictured on right), as well as the Brick Matte Finish case (the blue and red cases in photo), which has a soft-to-the-touch finish. It has a raised frame on the back that provides some extra protection for the camera lenses. The corners of the case have a raised lip as well.

    Amazon

    $21 at Amazon

You’re receiving price alerts for ESR Kickstand Case

Particularly with the two larger models of the Galaxy S22, I find that having an integrated kickstand is a nice feature and the ESR kickstand case is about as affordable as you get at around $20. It should dip to closer to $15 with time.

    David Carnoy/CNET

You’re receiving price alerts for LifeProof Wake

The LifeProof Wake case is made out of recycled ocean plastic. It’s attractively designed but I wouldn’t call it super tough — it isn’t enclosed at the bottom and has 6-foot drop protection. (Note that some cases on this list have higher drop-protection ratings.)

    David Carnoy/CNET

    $60 at Amazon

You’re receiving price alerts for Mous Limitless 3.0

For the Galaxy S22, UK-based Mous brings its Limitless 3.0 case ($60) to the Galaxy S22. It comes in a few different eye-catching styles, all of them lined with the AiroShock material that the company says delivers excellent protection in a slim design. They do seem durable and all include a lifetime warranty.

Mous’ Limitless 3.0 cases are compatible with the company’s Limitless 3.0 accessories. That includes a wallet that magnetically adheres to the back of the phone case and a few mounts, one of which is an air-vent mount for your car.

It’s also worth noting that the Limitless 3.0 cases are the only ones I’ve seen that have a SIM-card storage slot on the inside of the smartphone case for international travelers in the habit of SIM-swapping. You can also grab select styles on sale right now at Mous.

We’ve gathered up some of the best recent titles that you can snag at a discount below.

    PlayStation console and accessory deals

    Sony

Plenty of PS5 games are still available for the PlayStation 4, too, and if you’re looking for a good price on a console, your best bet is to shop refurbished. GameStop currently has a selection of used 1TB slim models available for less than $300. That’s around $100 less than the limited quantity of new consoles that are still floating around out there. This refurb model also includes a DualShock Wireless controller.

    Turtle Beach

Turtle Beach is one of the top brands out there when it comes to gaming headsets, and the second-gen Stealth 700 is one of our favorite PlayStation headsets on the market. These headphones are compatible with both the PS4 and PS5, and are equipped with 50mm speakers for clear, immersive sound so you can hear every step and shot. They’re totally wireless thanks to the use of a Mini-USB transmitter, and the mic arm folds up into the headset so it’s out of your way when you’re not using it for voice chats.

    HyperX

If you don’t want to spend over $100 on a headset, there are plenty of more affordable options out there. The HyperX Cloud is a slight step down from the Cloud Alpha that made our list of the best PS5 headsets for 2023, and has plenty to offer for around $60. It’s Hi-Fi capable with 53mm drivers, is equipped with in-line audio controls for easy adjustments on the fly and has memory foam ear pads so it’s comfortable to wear during long gaming sessions.

    Sarah Tew/CNET

When it comes to game consoles, 500GB or even a full 1TB of storage can fill up pretty quickly. While you can certainly delete games and download them again later, an external storage drive is a much more efficient solution. This 1TB WD drive is compatible with the PS4 and PS5, but it can only store PS4 games. And with optimized speeds of up to 900Mbps, you can skip those loading screens and get right to the action.

You’re receiving price alerts for WD Black D30 1TB Game Drive: $110

    Samsung

If you have managed to score yourself a PlayStation 5, you may be looking to beef up the storage a bit to get the most out of your next-gen console. Fortunately, the PS5 has an extra internal storage drive slot, so you can easily expand it with an M.2 SSD. The Samsung 980 Pro is our overall favorite model on the market, and right now you can even pick it up on sale — impressive, considering that it is sometimes difficult to even find in stock. This model also features a built-in heatsink, which was missing on previous generations.

You’re receiving price alerts for Samsung 980 Pro 1TB Internal SSD: $120

    Sony

While this isn’t a deal, it’s worth noting that the new high-performance DualSense Edge PS5 controller is now available for purchase. This customizable controller allows you to fine-tune your playing style with mappable buttons and swappable stick caps. You can even create multiple control profiles so you can easily switch between different players or games.

This Mac App Makes Signing Documents a Breeze

Over the past decade, we’ve slowly moved from paper to digital documents. Whether you’re signing a lease, doing your taxes or filling out a contract, you can do it all from your computer. And if you’re a Mac owner, signing these documents is easier than you think.

You might be using third-party software like Adobe Acrobat Reader to fill out your docs, but there’s another way to do it that doesn’t involve downloading anything. Using the Preview app, which comes built in to MacOS, you can sign pretty much any document in seconds.

  • Google Discontinues Google Glass AR Headset Again

Google Discontinues Google Glass AR Headset Again

Google will immediately stop selling its augmented reality glasses, the Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2, the company announced on a support page Wednesday. The announcement marks the second time in the past 10 years that Google has discontinued the head-mounted optical display.

Google has been active in VR and AR for years, making its first foray into sales of smart glasses in April 2013 with the release of Google Glass. However, the $1,500 headset was largely seen as expensive and invasive, and Google stopped selling its first Glass edition in January 2015.

Two years later, Google re-entered the market with a hardware revamp of Glass in a similar design. Instead of pursuing the consumer market, Google aimed the customizable Glass Enterprise Edition at the business sector, specifically factories and surgeons. The latest edition got a speed boost in 2019 with the addition of a faster Qualcomm XR1 chip, a low-power processor designed for lightweight AR and VR devices.

Though Google said it would stop selling the headset as of Wednesday, it plans to continue supporting the glasses until Sept. 15. Google said the glasses will continue to work after Sept. 15, but it doesn’t plan to issue any software updates and its preinstalled Meet the Glass app may stop working after that date.

The support page didn’t give a reason for the discontinuation, nor did a Google representative when asked. “For years, we’ve been building AR into many Google products and we’ll continue to look at ways to bring new, innovative AR experiences across our product portfolio,” the Google spokesman said.

  • Try DuckDuckGo’s New AI Feature, DuckAssist, Now for Free

Try DuckDuckGo’s New AI Feature, DuckAssist, Now for Free

Privacy-focused search engine DuckDuckGo has a new optional artificial intelligence feature called DuckAssist. Users of DuckDuckGo’s browser apps or extensions can access a beta version of the feature now, for free.

Unlike ChatGPT or Microsoft’s Bing AI, DuckAssist isn’t a chatbot, DuckDuckGo says. Instead, it’s an addition to the search engine’s existing Instant Answers feature. Instant Answers taps various online sources to give you a quick answer to your query without you having to click one of the links in the search results. Now DuckAssist can lend a hand, but it pulls from a smaller set of sources.

Enter a question into the DuckDuckGo search bar and DuckAssist scans Wikipedia, and occasionally Britannica, to generate an answer. DuckAssist uses technology from ChatGPT creator OpenAI and Anthropic to summarize the answer and make the response more conversational. When DuckAssist answers, it also links to the Wikipedia or Britannica article it pulled its answer from.

For now, the best way to use DuckAssist is to ask questions with straightforward answers, Gabriel Weinberg, DuckDuckGo’s founder and CEO, wrote in a blog post. That means DuckAssist can answer questions like, “What is the capital of Nigeria?” better than questions with qualitative elements like, “What is the best Legend of Zelda game?” (But this writer says Majora’s Mask.)

Weinberg wrote that wording a query in the form of a question will make it more likely that DuckAssist will generate a response. He also wrote that if you’re pretty sure Wikipedia has the answer to your question, adding “wiki” to any question also makes it more likely that DuckAssist will appear.

DuckAssist answering the question "What color is 'the dress?'"DuckAssist answering the question "What color is 'the dress?'"

DuckAssist can settle the age old question, “What color is ‘the dress’?”

    DuckDuckGo

DuckAssist won’t always generate the correct answer, according to Weinberg. The tool might struggle to correctly answer complex questions, too.

“There’s a limit to the amount of information the feature can summarize,” Weinberg wrote. “Inaccuracies can happen if our relevancy function is off, unintentionally omitting key sentences, or if there’s an underlying error in the source material given.”

DuckDuckGo said DuckAssist is anonymous, doesn’t use queries to train its AI model and doesn’t share personally identifiable information with third parties.

Though DuckAssist is being released in beta, DuckDuckGo said that if the beta goes well, it plans to release DuckAssist to all search users in the weeks ahead. DuckDuckGo also plans to release other AI-enhanced search and browsing features in the near future.

You can also disable DuckAssist in search settings if you don’t want to use the tool. Disabling DuckAssist will also disable all Instant Answers outside of DuckAssist, too.

Microsoft’s and Google’s AI tools were introduced in February.

    CNET

DuckDuckGo joins other tech companies, like Microsoft and Google, that have introduced their own AI tools to the public in the last few months.

Many of these other tools are chatbots based on, or developed in opposition to, OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and they let you carry on a conversation with an AI, to a limited degree.

Despite the buzz around such tools, AI is still a work in progress. In December, OpenAI’s chief executive, Sam Altman, said users of ChatGPT should be careful.

“ChatGPT is incredibly limited, but good enough at some things to create a misleading impression of greatness,” Altman tweeted. “It’s a mistake to be relying on it for anything important right now. It’s a preview of progress; we have lots of work to do on robustness and truthfulness.”

In February, Microsoft began limiting the number of responses that its Bing AI can send, to stop conversations from getting weird and confusing the chatbot. It later relaxed the restriction, but only slightly.

Some AI tools, like Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s Bing AI, have also included inaccurate information in their responses. DuckDuckGo said that because DuckAssist draws from a limited number of sources, the chance of the tool generating incorrect information is reduced.

  • Grammarly’s New AI Tool Is More Than a Spell-Checker

Grammarly’s New AI Tool Is More Than a Spell-Checker

Grammarly, the company behind the digital writing assistant of the same name, is expanding its artificial intelligence resources with a new generative AI tool called GrammarlyGo. The company said the new tool is intended to improve communication, and most Grammarly users will be able to use it starting in April.

“Poor communication erodes relationships, stifles business growth and results, and slows feedback loops that devour our time, just to name a few effects,” Rahul Roy-Chowdhury, Grammarly’s global head of product, wrote in a blog post. “In research we conducted with The Harris Poll last year, we established that poor communication costs US businesses up to $1.2 trillion annually — or $12,506 per employee.” You can read the full report here.

According to Grammarly, GrammarlyGo will use personal, organizational and situational context to help craft messages for email, social media and long-form communication. That means if you use GrammarlyGo to write an interoffice message to your work team, the tool could help make your message sound more professional.

Grammarly has multiple subscription tiers, starting with free and laddering up to Premium and Business plans for $12 and $15 per month, respectively.

GrammarlyGo will give you prompts to improve, simplify or shorten a message, as well as a prompt to adjust the message’s tone for different scenarios. You’ll also be able to enter your own prompt to fit your needs.

GrammarlyGo can also be used to generate outlines or ideas, which can be added to messages or used as references. The tool will also have one-click prompts to help you get over writer’s block.

“By embracing new technologies like generative AI, we can advance our vision of supporting the entire process — from conception to comprehension,” Roy-Chowdhury wrote.

Grammarly is the latest tech company to announce an AI tool in the wake of OpenAI’s ChatGPT bursting onto the scene at the end of 2022. Other companies, like Microsoft, Google and Snapchat, have announced AI chatbot tools that a person can seemingly carry on a conversation with and that are poised to remake internet search and other familiar online activities, from writing essays to planning a week’s vacation to a new destination. These tools can also generate messages and ideas but don’t appear to take context into account when generating content.

GrammarlyGo’s ability to understand context and tone to a limited degree implies this AI tool is not only a generative AI but a very basic contextual AI, as well.

According to Techopedia, generative AI is an umbrella term that can apply to any type of AI that can be used to create things like text, images, video, audio and code. The technology company Symbl.ai writes that contextual AI can analyze cultural, historical and situational aspects of data to make the best decision.

Users need to give GrammarlyGo information about what kind of text they want the tool to create.

According to Grammalry, GrammarlyGo can understand situational context enough to create tailored communication for different scenarios. You still need to input certain data, like the level of formality and tone, into GrammarlyGo in order for it to create the right message. Although the tool may not intuitively be able to respond appropriately, it can differentiate between crafting a casual and formal response if it’s given the data.

GrammarlyGo will be available across other Grammarly products, like Grammarly Premium, Business, Education and Grammarly for Developers. Some Grammarly Free users in select markets will also be able to access GrammarlyGo.
