  • Take Stunning Landscape Photos With Your Phone With These Pro Tips

Take Stunning Landscape Photos With Your Phone With These Pro Tips

Today’s top phones, such as the iPhone 15 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, have incredible cameras that can snag the sort of stunning photographs you’d normally expect to see coming from pro-level DSLRs. Even older or more affordable phones like 2021’s iPhone 13 Pro or the new Google Pixel 8 can take beautiful images that you might want to print and display on your wall.

In this guide, I’ll show you how to take landscape photos with your phone, whether you’re heading into the countryside or deep into the heart of the mountains. While some of the tips apply to recent phones with multiple lens options, many are relevant whether your device is 3 months or 3 years old, Apple or Android.

    Sort your phone camera settings

Your phone is probably capable of taking a cracking landscape photo in its default auto mode, but let’s take things a bit further.

If your phone has a “pro” mode that gives you manual control of settings, switch into that. If it doesn’t, an app like Moment, Lightroom or MuseCam lets you take control of settings like ISO, shutter speed and white balance.

    20190621-151601-2

Crucially, these apps also let you shoot in raw format. Raw images don’t save many of the automatic camera settings that your phone would normally apply to a JPEG image, such as white balance or sharpening. The result is an image that lets you change the white balance, alter color tones and rescue detail from the highlights and shadows much more easily — and with less image degradation — than you can with a simple JPEG. I’ll come back to this more in the editing section below.

Apple’s last few generations of Pro iPhone can use the company’s ProRaw format, which uses some computational photography techniques like HDR blending but still generates an easily editable DNG file. Tapping the Raw button on the camera screen will turn on raw shooting. Google has a similar raw function built into its Pixel line.

In landscapes, altering white balance is often crucial as auto white balance might see a scene with a lot of warm tones (such as fall leaves on trees) and try to use a cool white balance to even it out, but in so doing, it loses all of that natural warmth. Being able to tone down some of the highlights from a bright sky or bring up the shadows in the foreground is important, and being able to alter your white balance after you’ve taken the shot gives you much more flexibility in your editing, rather than having the colors baked into the image when you take it.

The downside to shooting in raw is that your images will likely need some work in an editing app like Lightroom or Snapseed before you can share them. Photographing landscapes is often a slower, more methodical process, and spending time in editing is all part of the experience of crafting a beautiful image.

    20190426-193116-2

    Shoot early, stay out late

Time of day is everything in landscape photography, because the lighting changes completely as the sun passes overhead. The best time of day to catch dramatic light is either at sunrise or at sunset. The sun is low in the sky both times of day, resulting in directional light and long shadows cast over the scene.

Midday is typically the worst time to shoot, as the overhead light doesn’t create much in the way of shadow detail, resulting in scenes that can look flat and lifeless.

If you have a particular location in mind, it’s worth setting your alarm and getting out early to see what you can capture during the sunrise. If time allows, try and return to shoot the same scene at different times of day to see when it looks best.

    Watch the weather

Weather plays a huge part in any outdoor photography, but none more so than with landscapes. Different weather conditions will transform your scene, completely altering its mood, lighting and colors. But don’t assume that bad weather means bad photos.

    img-0690

Personally, I love the foreboding, moody atmosphere of a landscape with dark storm clouds billowing above. Often the light that comes after a storm can look particularly dramatic. So while the hike to your chosen location might be a miserable slog in pouring rain, keep your spirits up by imagining the beautiful photo you might get at the end.

The worst weather for landscapes is that plain, miserable gray sky where there’s no texture to the clouds, no interesting light on the land and no contrast to the scene in front of you.

Keep an eye on your favorite weather app and make the decision based on what’s predicted. As long as you’ve packed the right clothing, you can brave the worst of the weather, and if it gets too bad then navigate Google Maps to the nearest pub to sit it out with a good drink.

Experiment with your wide and zoom lenses

If your phone has a wide-angle mode, then now’s the time to give it a try. If you don’t have a wide mode on your phone as standard, you can use additional lenses to get the same effect.

    20190620-165645

Superwide landscapes can be particularly dramatic, as they capture so much of a scene in a single image. Mountaintops that would otherwise be out of frame are suddenly captured in all their majesty, while beautiful rivers can now be seen in their entirety, snaking their way into a scene.

But once you’ve had the excitement of seeing the scene in full, try using the telephoto zoom lenses on your phone to focus on some of the details within it. Look for interesting rock formations, patterns in the landscapes or unusual shapes in the scene — all of which can stand out when you zoom in or crop out other distracting elements.

    Concentrate on composition

It’s easy to think that just using as wide an angle as possible is a guarantee of a cool landscape photo, but that’s not the case. In fact, to get the best out of your wide shots you need to think about composition even more.

    Foreground interest

Look for foreground interest in your scenes. Tree stumps, moss-covered rocks, even some pretty wildflowers can all be used to draw the viewer’s eye into a scene. When you’re at the top of the hill taking your shot, spend a couple of minutes having a look around for something you can place in your shot to help bring the scene together.

    moment-photo-cecdb4a0-2

    Leading lines

Leading lines are also great elements of a brilliant landscape composition. Keep your eye out for pathways, nice walls or other long elements that wind their way farther into the scene — it’s exactly that winding perspective that allows your viewer’s eye to follow along a line and into your image.

    Straight horizons

If your phone shows grid lines or a leveling tool on the screen, use that to make sure your horizon line is straight. Then double-check you’re not accidentally chopping the top off your subject, be it a mountain, a building or some trees. Remember, you can do a lot to improve a mediocre image with editing, but you can’t do anything to rescue bad composition.

    Edit your photos

Your image isn’t finished once you’ve hit that shutter button; a few tweaks in an editing app is all it can take to transform a simple snap into a beautiful piece of art.

My favorite editing app is Adobe Lightroom Mobile, but I also get great results from Google’s Snapseed, which you can get for free on Android and iOS. You can check out my roundup of the best editing apps, which include various options for those of you who like to get a bit wild with your editing.

    20190619-201736-3
    20190619-201736-2

I tend to start by tweaking the white balance so the colors look accurate, or to give a warmth boost to a beautiful sunset. It’s here that shooting in raw becomes particularly beneficial. I’ll tweak the exposure levels, particularly the highlights and shadows, in order to bring a bright sky a bit more under control or to boost shadows in the foreground. A bit of additional contrast can help add some punch to the scene as well.

My advice is to make a coffee, sit back and play with the sliders in your chosen app to your heart’s content. Try out the different filters and experiment with layering different effects on top of each other by saving and reimporting your image. Remember that there’s no right or wrong way to edit an image, so enjoy playing around — you can always go back to the original image if you don’t like what you’ve come up with.

Is Black Friday a good time to buy a phone?

The best times of year for purchasing electronics like phones are Prime Day and Black Friday. As such, now is the perfect time to pick up a new phone if you’ve been wanting to, and with the whole of November now effectively Black Friday, you don’t necessarily need to wait for the actual Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend.

What is the best place to buy a phone on Black Friday?

Most of the major retailers are having big sales on phones, so it’s worth checking out Best Buy’s Black Friday sale and Walmart’s Black Friday offers. Amazon’s early Black Friday deals are also worth keeping an eye on. That said, some phone manufacturers might also be having sales on their sites that will give you extra bonuses; in particular, you’ll want to check out Samsung and Apple. It’s always a good idea to check the sites of other manufacturers and smaller retailers as well, but you likely won’t find as good a deal or as wide a selection there.

  • Buy With Prime: Here’s How to Snag Prime’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals From Other Retailers

Buy With Prime: Here’s How to Snag Prime’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday Deals From Other Retailers

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are right around the corner, and that means that Amazon already has tons of active deals for shoppers to peruse (with more to be coming in the days leading up to Black Friday and Cyber Monday). If you’re looking to take advantage of Amazon’s deals and tackle your holiday shopping this year, you’re in luck. Amazon’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals will extend beyond Amazon’s website thanks to “Buy with Prime”.

“Buy with Prime” gives Prime members discounts on products from a long list of brands that are offering Amazon’s Black Friday Deals on their websites. If a retailer is participating in “Buy with Prime,” they will include a “Buy with Prime” banner that allows you to add the product you wish to buy into your cart.

Read on to learn the ins and outs of “Buy with Prime” and what Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals are available on third-party sites right now.

What is Amazon Buy with Prime?

Amazon’s Buy with Prime program lets Amazon Prime members shop at non-Amazon online stores seamlessly by automatically including their email address, shipping address and payment method from their Amazon account.

Participating brands include a Buy with Prime purchase button on their product pages, most often with a coupon code that’s required at checkout. Although they’re linked to your Amazon account, purchases occur on the retailers’ sites, not Amazon’s. Since retailers aren’t required to offer the same selection and pricing on Amazon as on their own sites, Buy with Prime can get you some deals that aren’t available on Amazon.

a screenshot of a Buy with Prime offer

When you visit a product at an online store participating in Buy with Prime, you’ll see a blue button marked “Buy with Prime,” with an expected delivery date above or below the button. If the product is on sale for Amazon Prime Day, all you’ll need to do is click the “Buy with Prime” button.

When you click that Buy with Prime button, you’ll initiate a login process with Amazon. If you’ve never logged in to an external site with your Amazon account before, you may need to verify your identity with a one-time password sent to your email address or phone number.

After you punch in that six-digit code, you’ll get a confirmation that you’re securely signed in to Amazon on the retailer’s site, along with a brief description of what info Amazon will share with the retailer. If you have logged in to an external site with Amazon before, the Buy with Prime button will take you directly to the confirmation page to continue.

Hitting the “Continue as [your Amazon account name]” button will take you to a checkout screen on the retailer’s website that is hosted by Amazon Buy with Prime, with your delivery address and payment method automatically entered along with an expected delivery date. Clicking the shipping address or payment method will let you change them via the same process as on Amazon’s own website.

Once you’ve completed your purchases with Buy with Prime, Amazon will handle the shipping and returns of the product.

How do I get Prime Day deals with Buy with Prime?

If you’re interested in taking advantage of Buy with Prime, you can see a long list of Buy with Prime deals on the Amazon website. Brands include Sena Cases, Targus and k18.

Once you’ve made it to the Buy with Prime checkout page, you’ll continue to check out as you normally would, and the Prime Day discount will automatically apply to the price of the item. All Buy with Prime orders will be covered by the Amazon Pay A-to-Z Guarantee.

  • Apple’s Bringing RCS Support to iPhone Next Year

Apple’s Bringing RCS Support to iPhone Next Year

Apple could be making a big step toward improving texting between iPhone and Android devices by adopting the Rich Communication Services standard in 2024.

According to 9to5Mac on Thursday, an Apple spokesperson said in a statement that RCS — a more feature-rich texting standard that’s available on Android phones — will be coming to the iPhone and will work alongside iMessage. Apple did not respond to a request for comment from CNET.

“Later next year, we will be adding support for RCS Universal Profile, the standard as currently published by the GSM Association,” an Apple spokesperson said in a statement to 9to5Mac. “We believe RCS Universal Profile will offer a better interoperability experience when compared to SMS or MMS. This will work alongside iMessage, which will continue to be the best and most secure messaging experience for Apple users.”

An exact time frame wasn’t given. The move may lead to a vast improvement in how texts are sent between Apple iPhones and other phones, as RCS has the capability to support typing indicators, high-quality media sharing and in-line reactions. Currently, RCS handles these features for texts between Android phones that are using the Google Messages app, which is the default texting app on most Android phones.

“Everyone deserves to communicate with each other in ways that are modern and secure, no matter what phone they have,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement. “That’s why we have worked closely with the mobile industry to accelerate the adoption of RCS, and we’re happy to see Apple take their first step today by coming on board to embrace RCS.

“We welcome Apple’s participation in our ongoing work with GSMA to evolve RCS and make messaging more equitable and secure, and look forward to working with them to implement this on iOS in a way that works well for everyone.”

Should this indeed take place, it doesn’t necessarily mean that all of Apple’s best iMessage features would suddenly be available to Android users. Both Apple and Google have included their own exclusive features in their texting apps, such as Apple’s Check In feature for location sharing and Google’s Magic Compose feature that uses artificial intelligence to draft texts. It also might not mean the death of the green bubble versus blue bubble situation.

Update, 2:18 p.m. PT: Adds comment from the Google spokesperson.

  • Best Gaming Gifts for 2023

    Best Gaming Gifts for 2023

Gearing up for gift-giving for gamers can seriously break your brain, especially if you’re not well-versed in the gaming world. And it can quickly become expensive too — the coolest gear is not cheap. Yeah, there are a lot of selections on this list of the best gifts for gamers that are on the pricier side, but we’ve made an effort to include options across a range of budgets.

We’ve got the perennial favorites on here — the Nintendo Switch OLED, the Sony PS5, and Microsoft Xbox Series X and Series S — but chances are your intended recipient might already own one of these. What you won’t find on here, at least not yet, are the new handheld consoles that run Windows, like the Asus ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go. They’re expensive and in my opinion, not quite mass-market ready yet.

Going a little further afield, Meta’s Quest 2 is still the VR headset to beat, even though the Quest 3 just came out; it’s still good but cheaper, and that can make a big difference when you’re shelling out for a lot of presents. But we also haven’t finished reviewing the Quest 3, and so that opinion may change after we do. The update to Sony’s veteran PlayStation VR headset, the PSVR 2, is fab as well, but costs as much as the PS5 it attaches to.

These are nothing without accessories like gaming headsets, mice and keyboards, and those are cheaper and more gift-friendly, but can still get pretty pricey. I’m still plowing through a seeming infinite number of options, but am trying to provide recommendations at all price levels; I’ll be adding more choices between now and the last possible minute.
