  • This Turntable Is the Perfect Pick for a Beginner Collector

This Turntable Is the Perfect Pick for a Beginner Collector

I love music, and though modern music streaming allows me to have any album or song I could possibly think of, right in the palm of my digital hand, there’s something so special about playing physical copies of my favorite songs. Long before I ever had a means to play them, I collected vinyl records, CDs and cassette tapes. Then in high school, I scrimped and saved so I could buy a small suitcase record player, which I basically lived in front of for several years… until it broke.

Over time, I’d become more involved and educated in the world of vinyl record care and collecting, so I was much more discriminating when I went to upgrade my turntable. I wanted something that was in my budget, was (sort of) portable, delivered high-quality sound and kept my records in good condition. Enter Audio-Technica’s AT-LP60XBT.

This entry-level turntable delivered on everything I needed. It’ll set you back $219, which is more expensive than suitcase record players, but for a high-quality turntable, it’s a pretty reasonable price. The AT-LP60XBT is easy to move — mine has withstood four moves over the last three years, and all the shuffling hasn’t compromised its quality.

Most important, it delivers great sound, and keeps my records nice and safe. I take comfort in knowing that I can spin my favorite LPs and I won’t have to worry about my turntable inflicting damage on my records.

The AT-LP60XBT is Bluetooth capable, so all you’ll need is a solid bluetooth speaker, and you’ll be set. Though the turntable doesn’t come with speakers, you can purchase a speaker and turntable bundle on Amazon. I was in college when I bought my turntable, and I purchased the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 (which has been discontinued, but the Wonderboom 3 will do the trick just the same).

If you’re looking for a solid starter turntable to fire up your collection, the AT-LP60XBT is a pretty perfect choice.

  • No iOS 17 Update on Your iPhone? Here’s Why

No iOS 17 Update on Your iPhone? Here’s Why

Apple’s iOS 17 software has been available to most iPhones since Sept. 18, but some people never got the update. That’s because some older iPhone models were left out of the newest software upgrade, including those from 2017 or before. If that’s you, you won’t be able to try out the new features in iOS 17 unless you buy a supported iPhone.

If you aren’t sure which iPhone you’ve got, a quick check in your settings can show you. Open your Settings app and tap General > About. Next to Model Name, you’ll see which iPhone you have.

We’ll show you how to find out whether your iPhone is compatible with iOS 17. Also, check out our list of the best iPhones to compare and see if there’s a newer model that might work for you.

Which iPhones are compatible with iOS 17?

If you’ve got one of these iPhones, you should now have access to iOS 17, Apple said.

Which iPhone models won’t run the new iOS 17?

With the release of iOS 17, there are three more iPhone models that won’t run Apple’s latest mobile operating system: iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X. Apple stopped providing feature upgrades for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 7 series with the release of iOS 16 last year. Those phones still run iOS 15.

What if your iPhone isn’t on the iOS 17 compatibility list?

If your iPhone isn’t listed above, it won’t support iOS 17, and you won’t get a notification to download the newest software. For instance, if you have an iPhone X or iPhone 8, the latest software you’ll ever be able to use on that phone is iOS 16.

Although older iPhones won’t support the latest version of iOS or get any of the new features, they should still be functional for a while. They will also continue to receive security updates for iOS 16. Apple released the latest security update for iOS 15 in July 2023 and will continue to release iOS 16 security updates in the near future.

When is Walmart’s Black Friday sale?

Walmart’s online Black Friday sale officially kicked off on Nov. 8. Plus members got access a few hours early, but the sale is currently open to everybody. Many of the in-store deals kicked off Nov. 10 with no set expiration for the sale at the moment, but it’s likely that it will roll into Cyber Monday, which falls on Nov. 27 this year.

Are Walmart Black Friday deals available in store?

Yes, Walmart will be offering in-store savings for Black Friday, though they kicked off 6 a.m. (local time) on Nov. 10. It’s worth noting, however, that there are some deals that will be available only online, so be sure to double-check before you rush down to your nearest branch.

  • Best Black Friday TV Deals: Save Hundreds on TVs From LG, Samsung, Sony and More

Best Black Friday TV Deals: Save Hundreds on TVs From LG, Samsung, Sony and More

As the weather turns cold, many of us may spend extra time in front of the TV, catching up on the latest shows and blockbusters. But investing in the right TV can significantly alter how you experience your favorite content and how convenient it is to find something to watch. For those with older model TVs or a screen that’s just too small, it may be a good time to upgrade the entertainment hub.

With Black Friday less than two weeks away, numerous retailers are slashing prices on TVs from a wide variety of brands. Regardless of what size or style you’re looking for, now is a great time to find price cuts on a screen you’ll love. We’ve searched the web to find the best Black Friday deals currently available on several major TV brands and have highlighted them below. We expect to see even more offers arrive as we get closer to the big day, so be sure to check back for updates on new deals and discounts.

TVs from LG, Sony and Amazon are displayed against a periwinkle-gray background.

Is Black Friday a good time to buy a TV?

If you’re looking for a solid deal on a TV, you’ll find plenty of opportunities throughout the year. That said, major shopping events like Prime Day, Black Friday and other seasonal sales are probably going to give you the best value for your investment.

What sort of TV should I buy?

When it comes to TVs, a few key factors should be considered: size, resolution and budget. We tend to recommend sizing up to the larger screens when you can, as a big picture will make a more noticeable difference than image quality will, generally speaking. If you’re looking for the best picture quality with the highest contrast you can get, however, OLED or mini-LED TVs are your best bet. With the popularity of streaming services continuing to surge, considering a smart TV with a built-in platform may be a good idea — though you can always purchase a streaming device of your choosing later.

Where is the best place to buy a TV on Black Friday?

You’ll find major discounts on TVs across several retailers during Black Friday. In fact, Amazon’s Black Friday sale has already discounted a multitude of Fire TVs ahead of the big day, and you can find numerous deals on a wide variety of TVs at both Walmart’s Black Friday sale and Best Buy’s Black Friday sale, among others. We expect even more deals to drop as we get closer to the big day. While you’ll find plenty of in-store doorbuster deals on TVs, we often find that shopping online allows you a chance to compare specs and prices across various models so that you can find the right fit for you. Plus, the convenience of having a TV shipped right to your door is hard to beat.

  • Nothing Chats Aims to Bring iMessage to Android, but It Sounds Messy

Nothing Chats Aims to Bring iMessage to Android, but It Sounds Messy

A new texting app claims to bring Apple’s iMessage system to an Android phone, but you’ll want to pay close attention to how it works, as it’s certainly not sanctioned by the iPhone-maker.

Nothing Chats, which UK-based phone-maker Nothing announced Tuesday, will launch in beta on Nov. 17 as an alternative to the Google Messages app that currently ships with its Nothing Phone 2. Nothing Chats uses Sunbird — a cross-platform texting service currently in its own beta period — to offer support for Apple’s iMessage service, which in theory will allow users of Nothing’s flagship phone the ability to text iPhone users as if they’re on an iPhone themselves, appearing as a blue bubble. Nothing Chats will also support texting over RCS to other Android phones, along with SMS and MMS.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Even though there are many cross-platform text services that work across the iPhone and Android devices like WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram, many people prefer to use the standard texting app as their primary method to text friends and family. Apple’s iMessage service, which is built into the iPhone’s Messages app, has a particular cultural dominance in the US for providing features that can only be sent between iPhone users, like enhanced media sharing, security and games. While rival services often match these features — Signal, for instance, just announced “spoiler” text formatting that functions like Apple’s Invisible Ink — the convenience of having these features built into iOS is often a draw that keeps iPhone customers from considering Android phones.

To set up iMessage inside of Nothing Chats, you’ll first need the $599 ( 579, AU$1,049) Nothing Phone 2. A Nothing representative confirmed that the app won’t currently work on the original Nothing Phone 1, nor any other Android phone at launch. The app will be available to download from the Google Play Store, and will initially be available in the US, Canada, the UK and other European countries.

After downloading the app, you’ll need to log in to Nothing Chats with an Apple ID username, or create one if you don’t have one already. Even though Nothing promises that neither it nor Sunbird will store any of your message data or Apple ID information, you should keep in mind that you are initially entering in your login details that might also be tied to other Apple services. A Nothing rep explained that these details are tokenized by Sunbird, used to set up a relay with one of Sunbird’s Mac Mini computers that make the connection to iMessage and after setup are destroyed by Sunbird. This process is different from using the Sign in with Apple feature to make an account on another website, which does use an Apple ID but does not require you to provide any sensitive information or passwords.

You should then set Nothing Chats as your default messaging app to start sending and receiving iMessage chats from iPhone users alongside texts from Android devices.

    Nothing Chats image

You’ll want to keep in mind that iMessage texts you send will use the email address attached to your Apple ID instead of your phone number. It’s similar to using iMessage from an iPad or Mac computer, when you don’t otherwise have an iPhone. Nothing plans to build phone number compatibility in a future update. For now, this might mean your texts will show up as coming from an email address instead of your phone number, though whoever you text can fix that by including your Apple ID email within your contact information on their phone. Nothing suggests sending your frequent iMessage contacts an updated vCard contact file to save, but this last step might be the most complicated, since it requires proactively updating other people’s phones.

Nothing Chats for desktop web browsers is also in the works for allowing texting from a computer or tablet, but a company representative said there isn’t yet a timeline for when that will launch. Message reactions are also not available at launch, with Nothing planning to add those before the end of the year.

Nothing Chats isn’t the first service to provide a workaround for iMessage texting from an Android phone, but none of the options are particularly simple. Beeper, which is also currently in beta, also aims to provide access to iMessage and other chat apps. AirMessage takes a self-hosted approach, where it’s installed directly on a Mac that must be running at all times with messages forwarded over to an Android phone. These approaches may allow for Android phones to send and receive iMessage texts, but they come with their own security tradeoffs and are unlikely to maintain feature parity as Apple updates its official iMessage service with new features.

While we would need to try out Nothing Chats before offering a clear verdict on it, it’s important to understand that the app’s iMessage access isn’t exactly an ideal way of jumping into Apple’s texting ecosystem, since it requires a technical workaround that relies on setting up a connection through a remote Mac Mini computer. And if you’ll be asking your contacts that absolutely must text you on iMessage to save your email address, the same effort could probably be used to figure out a different chat app to use.

The Nothing Chats app does provide two ways to end the connection to Apple’s iMessage if you decide it doesn’t work for your needs. One is a manual option from within the app. The other is an automatic disconnection from the service after two weeks of inactivity.

Nothing’s iMessage access — being developed entirely separately from Apple — also may lag behind any new iMessage features that Apple adds into iOS. That said, if you understand all those caveats and absolutely need blue bubble texting, Nothing Chats is potentially an option, as long as you have Nothing’s latest phone.

Update 2:38 p.m. PT: Adds additional information on how Nothing and Sunbird handles Apple ID information, and how the service connects to iMessage.

The new iMac would normally cost around $1,300 but you can pick one up today for just $1,199 if you choose the base configuration and, importantly, the silver color option. We also don’t know how long this deal will last, so you’ll want to lock in the savings now if you’ve been eyeing up Apple’s new desktop machine.

This 24-inch iMac, of course, comes with that new M3 chip which means you’re getting an integrated system with an eight-core CPU and eight-core GPU married to 8GB of RAM. Storage is handled by the built-in 256GB SSD and inputs come in the form of a pair of Thunderbolt 3/USB 4 ports. There’s also a 3.5mm headphone jack, too.

Amazon’s Already Affordable Fire TV Sets Are Up to 45% Off in Pre-Black Friday Sale

Black Friday sales are always a good time to treat yourself to a new home theater upgrade, but today you don’t even have to wait that long. Amazon is already offering deep discounts across its Fire TV range, including its Amazon Fire TV Soundbar.

There are multiple TV configurations available with a maximum 45% saving at the time of writing. However, we can’t vouch for how long any of these prices are likely to remain on offer, so that’s absolutely something to keep in mind if you’re planning on making a purchase. These deals could all come to an end without any warning.

There are plenty of different options here so we’re going to start with the one Amazon Fire TV Soundbar deal that you won’t want to ignore. Normally $120, the 2.0 speaker supports DTS Virtual:X and is now yours for just $100.

Fancy a new TV to pair your new soundbar with? The biggest percentage discount is available on the 32-inch 2-Series, which is 45% off and now yours for just $110. Looking for something bigger? The 55-inch 4-Series is a 4K TV that’s now just $340, a savings of $180. We loved the 4-Series’ brightness, which earned it a spot on our list of the best budget TVs.

Don’t worry if you don’t see a deal that fits the bill. There are plenty of other Black Friday TV deals to choose from already with more launching every day as we get nearer the big day.

  • How Qualcomm Plans to Bring Apple’s Ecosystem Perks to Windows and Android

How Qualcomm Plans to Bring Apple’s Ecosystem Perks to Windows and Android

At the Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii in late October, Qualcomm unveiled a new way for phones, PCs, tablets, headphones and accessories to automatically connect, simulating Apple’s seamless interactivity outside its ecosystem. All device makers need to do is integrate Qualcomm’s system into all their products.

Making this dream a reality is as simple as integrating software protocols on devices, and thanks to minimal hardware requirements, it can be done on new and old products. Whether device-makers follow through on integrating Snapdragon Seamless – and if they do, whether it works as Qualcomm hopes – remains to be seen.

But it shows the appeal of Apple’s signature interoperability between its first-party devices. From AirPods and Apple Watches instantly connecting to iPhones, to using iMessage across devices, to sharing files from iPhone to MacBook to Mac to iPad, the ease with which Apple’s devices work harmoniously together has kept many people from straying outside the company’s lineup. If that can be achieved with devices from other brands, Qualcomm could build a new era of personal devices.

“The goal for us is across-the-board interoperability to defragment across all of these different platforms, across manufacturers, across different operating systems,” said Kabir Kasargod, senior director of product management in charge of Seamless at Qualcomm.

On the Summit stage, Qualcomm kept the spotlight on PC and mobile chips with on-device AI, but nearly every presentation mentioned how Seamless could benefit it. The company set up a demonstration for attendees to try the product out, and after watching the pitch, I had to look for myself.

In a demo room full of Snapdragon-powered devices, Qualcomm set up a photo booth in the corner to showcase the Seamless workflow. I sat down on a chair in front of an Honor phone set up to photograph me in various poses –as if I was getting my yearbook photo taken. After my photo shoot, I watched as an attendant on a laptop used a separate keyboard and mouse to drag photos from the phone to the laptop and begin working on them in photo editing software. Four devices, all linked through Seamless.

It was a promising start, and even though all the devices were running Snapdragon silicon, they don’t need Qualcomm’s chips to work with the system. They’ll just work a bit better if they do, as they’ll tap into the sensor-packed Sensing Hub included in Snapdragon chips to add richer experiences, like communicating even when devices are locked with their screens off or if they are asleep.

Not just linking devices, but sharing continuity

There’s more to the potential of Snapdragon Seamless than dragging and dropping files between devices. Another benefit to having multiple devices talk to each other is continuity. Imagine writing up a document or playing a game and having progress carry over to another device right next to you.

Of course, we already have continuity over the cloud with services like Google Drive and games with cloud-based save files, but Qualcomm imagines Seamless could do it quietly in the background between adjacent devices. As it works now, Seamless uses multiple connectivity layers – Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, ultrawideband and even cell signal – for devices to keep in contact with each other.

Seamless’ responsive and immediate link could let you remotely activate the camera on another device. Within Apple’s ecosystem, you can do this by using your Apple Watch to remotely trigger the shutter on a paired iPhone; imagine the appeal of doing the same with Android and Windows devices. In my photo shoot demo, the attendant clicked the shutter button on the Honor phone from a nearby laptop.

Another Seamless demo at the Summit showed how the tech enables earbuds to automatically transition audio depending on which device you’re using, much like how Apple shifts AirPods pairing between iPads, iPhone and Macs. And if a call comes in, the audio will intuitively switch to it in what Kasargod calls “an intelligent handshake where the contextual information is driving where the user’s attention is, and by extension, the earbuds are following.”

Qualcomm isn’t the only one attempting to imitate Apple’s ecosystem interoperability. Google announced at CES 2022 its aims to make Android play better with other devices running its Wear OS software, Chrome OS computer software, Windows and Matter smart home devices. Intel also unveiled its Unison software in September 2022 to send messages and get notifications from Android and iOS phones.

A laptop with a messaging app open on its display shown side-by-side with a phone display showing the same messaging app.

Snapdragon Seamless has interoperability between Windows and Android devices through a software library, and Qualcomm is working on one for Linux. For light interactions, Seamless can be uploaded via Windows or Android apps, while more involved interactions require installing the Seamless software library at the operating system layer.

Device makers will need to make choices about implementing Snapdragon Seamless, like deciding what information is shared from one gadget to another. Some info is automatically discoverable by other devices when looking to make those connective digital handshakes, but anything private will need encryption or authentication to access.

A device’s hardware – specifically, its connectivity options – limits what it’ll be able to do with the protocol. If manufacturers want their devices to use Seamless to unlock car doors, the device will need ultrawideband functionality. For use cases that require more constant connections without draining the battery, devices need Bluetooth low energy.

There’s a lot of potential for how devices talk to each other. During a Q&A session at the Snapdragon Summit, Dino Bekis, vice president and general manager of wearables and mixed signal solutions at Qualcomm gave an example of how devices could use Seamless to share info about how good the connectivity is where they’re located.

Read more: Best Phones to Buy in 2023

“Maybe here [where I’m standing] I don’t sense [signal] congestion off my earbuds and my laptop on the other side of the room is saying hey, there’s a lot of congestion over here,” Bekis said, so maybe the earbuds would prioritize stronger connectivity if the user walked into a more congested area. The real question for manufacturers, Bekis said, is “now that I have all this extra information, how do I want to use it to deliver a better end-user experience?”

There are even possibilities with extended reality. Yet another demo at the Summit focused on another potential scenario for Seamless: wearing a smartwatch and XR headset and doing exercises while a phone records video of them working out. Each device would communicate via Seamless and stream your data-rich workout to the trainer in real time.

Another example came during a technical deep-dive with a new scenario of a person playing a game on their phone while wearing an XR headset. As both devices communicated, the headset brought up a topographical map of the phone game showing location and enemy info – all happening automatically without the player selecting anything.

A laptop sits open with the Snapdragon X Elite logo centered on its screen.

Yes, there is an AI tie-in

Most of Snapdragon Summit’s announcements around artificial intelligence were focused on integrating generative AI on the hardware level. The Snapdragon X Elite for PC laptops and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for phones both have on-device generative AI. Alone, they can run queries and use AI tricks to expand photos beyond their original boundaries without ever using the cloud.

Seamless is an opportunity to combine AI capabilities from several devices, according to Kedar Kondap, senior vice president and general manager of compute and gaming at Qualcomm. The sooner that on-device AI proliferates across phones, PC or anywhere else, the more use cases grow.

“The more pervasive [Seamless] becomes, the better it is across the board to be able to use AI and seamlessly leverage the NPU and AI engine capabilities across multiple devices,” said Kondap.

The long road of getting Seamless implemented

As Qualcomm pitched Snapdragon Seamless on stage, the appeal was obvious. The project aspirationally addresses a major issue of connectivity between Android and Windows devices that Apple has accomplished harmoniously in its own ecosystem, said Anshel Sag, principal analyst at Moor Insights and Strategy.

“People deserve a more coherent cross-device experience and Seamless is without a doubt the first step in making that possible,” Sag said. Yet the company has its work cut out for them: “Qualcomm has made some strides, but there’s still a long way to go and lots of OEMs who need convincing.”

Qualcomm isn’t ignorant of the effort needed to get manufacturers onboard. It’s easy for a company to focus its energy on its own products and a little harder to think about its devices as belonging to an ecosystem beyond brands.

“Looking at it from an end-user standpoint, if in a household you have different manufacturers’ devices, why not have them talking in a way that can ultimately create some new experiences?” Kasargod said. “Our goal is really to enable our partners so that all of them begin to, in a standardized way, unify their ecosystems.”
