How to Watch the 2023 Cricket World Cup Live From Anywhere

Spanning six weeks and 48 games, the festival of white ball cricket is upon us as India hosts the 13th edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup.

England come into the tournament as defending champs after their thrilling triumph over New Zealand back in 2019.

Australia, South Africa, Pakistan are all being backed by pundits to lift the trophy on November 19th, but its the hosts — currently ranked No 1 in the world — that have been installed as favourites to win the tournament for the first time since 2011.

Below, we’ll outline the best live TV streaming services to use to watch every match of the 2023 Cricket World Cup, no matter where you are in the world.

The ICC Cricket World Cup trophy.

The 2023 Cricket World Cup: When and where?

The 2023 Cricket World Cup takes place in India over six weeks, starting with the opening fixture between England and New Zealand on Oct. 5, and ending with the final at the Narendra Modi Stadiumin Ahmedabad on Nov. 19.

How to watch the 2023 Cricket World Cup online from anywhere using a VPN

If you find yourself unable to view the tournament locally, you may need a different way to watch this match — that’s where using a VPN can come in handy. A VPN is also the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds on game day by encrypting your traffic, and it’s also a great idea if you’re traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network, and you want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins.

With a VPN, you’re able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the game. Most VPNs, like our Editors’ Choice, ExpressVPN, make it really easy to do this.

Using a VPN to watch or stream sports is legal in any country where VPNs are legal, including the US, UK and Australia, as long as you have a legitimate subscription to the service you’re streaming. You should be sure your VPN is set up correctly to prevent leaks: Even where VPNs are legal, the streaming service may terminate the account of anyone it deems to be circumventing correctly applied blackout restrictions.

Stream the 2023 Cricket World Cup for free in New Zealand

Pay TV broadcaster Sky Sport has broadcast rights to show every 2023 Cricket World Cup game live in New Zealand.

Quick tips for streaming the 2023 Cricket World Cup using a VPN

    • With four variables at play — your ISP, browser, video streaming provider and VPN — your experience and success when streaming the Cricket World Cup action live may vary.
    • If you don’t see your desired location as a default option for ExpressVPN, try using the “search for city or country” option.
    • If you’re having trouble getting the game after you’ve turned on your VPN and set it to the correct viewing area, there are two things you can try for a quick fix. First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs — like Roku — don’t have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you’ll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you’re using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location.
    • All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network’s sports app, you’ll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location.
    • And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you’re using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommend Brave.
  • iPhone 15 Pro Users: Fix Overheating Issues With Apple’s Latest iOS 17 Update

iPhone 15 Pro Users: Fix Overheating Issues With Apple’s Latest iOS 17 Update

Apple has issued a patch just weeks after the iPhone 15 Pro was released and people began complaining about overheating issues with their devices.

Apple issued iOS 17.0.3 on Wednesday, saying that the software update provides security updates and bug fixes, including the issue that could cause your iPhone to run hot.

It follows people sharing stories online about how their new iPhones were overheating or felt uncomfortably hot to hold.

Apple told CNET over the weekend that the iPhone overheating complaints were caused by a software bug in iOS 17, rather than the physical design of the iPhone 15 Pro, as well as “recent updates to third-party apps,” including Instagram and Uber.

To download the update, go to Settings > General > Software Update, tap Install Now and follow the onscreen prompts, and here are some simple steps you can take to cool down your phone.

The patch comes just after Apple released iOS 17.1 beta 2.

  • Gmail Is Now Getting Emoji Reactions: Here’s How to Use Them

Gmail Is Now Getting Emoji Reactions: Here’s How to Use Them

A thumbs-up here, kissy lips there, a cat face here — emoji are seemingly everywhere. The colorful little images show up in text messages, Facebook, Instagram, even Slack. And now, emoji are coming to Gmail. According to a new post on the Google support site, the feature is now rolling out gradually for Android device users and will come to iOS and web users in the next few months.

How to use emoji reactions in Gmail

    Using emoji

The process sounds pretty simple. Once the reactions are rolled out, you just need to open the Gmail app and open the message to which you want to respond.

Below the message, there will be an option to “add emoji reaction” and then a list from which to choose. The selected emoji will then show up at the bottom of the email.

The whole emoji library will be available to choose from, though you may need to tap “more” to see choices beyond six basic options. And a representative for Google tells us that the party-popper emoji will include a short, full-page animation upon send and on the first-time it’s opened. Additionally, a limited set of emoji will include short animations.

    Checking who sent the emoji

Touching and holding the emoji will show who sent that reaction. People can reuse a reaction that someone else added to an email, or choose another one to add.

    Removing attached emoji

If you decide you didn’t really mean to attach that red heart (or whatever) to the email in question, you can remove it if you act quickly. Google says you’ll have from 5 to 30 seconds to tap “undo” at the bottom of the message to delete the emoji.

To change the amount of undo time, you need to update the send cancellation period for Gmail messages in your settings.

    Emoji as an email?

Emoji in email isn’t as simple as attaching them to iMessage.

Some people may see the emoji reactions as an email with a link saying that “[Name of sender] reacted via Gmail.”

This will happen to those using an older version of Gmail, who don’t have a Gmail address, have set their conversation view to “off,” are on a work or school account, or use another email program, such as Apple Mail or Microsoft Outlook. (Yeesh, this seems like it could lead to an excessive amount of fairly useless emails, but we’ll have to see how annoying it becomes.)

    Emoji can’t always be sent

The post also notes that emoji reactions won’t always be available. That will happen if you’re using a work or school account, sending to a group email list, sending to more than 20 recipients, receiving the mail via BCC, using another email provider, encrypted the message with Client-side encryption or have a custom reply-to address.

  • Should You Buy a Laptop on Prime Day?

Should You Buy a Laptop on Prime Day?

Short answer: Yes, if a laptop meets your needs and budget, Prime Day is a good time to buy it — especially if the price is right. However, you might not find the exact model and configuration you’re after at a discount. Do keep in mind that laptop deals have a tendency to sell out quickly as well, so it might just be a case of being in the right place at the right time.

Should you buy a laptop on Prime Day?

Amazon’s next big Prime Day event will officially kick off on Oct. 10, but some deals are already available. If you’re shopping for a laptop, it’ll be a lot like hunting for a bargain on Black Friday.

However, it’s important to remember that not every deal you see on Prime Day is actually a good one. Discounts can be mediocre at times, even if it looks like you’re saving a lot of money. Always check how much the laptop normally sells for — especially at other retailers — before getting your credit card out.

Also, many of the best Prime Day laptop deals can be had only while supplies last. If you think the laptop you’re considering is the bargain you’ve been waiting for, don’t sleep on it. Before you rush into a purchase, though, check to see the return policy. For laptops sold by Amazon, it’s usually a full refund or replacement within 30 days if returned in its original condition.

Which laptop should I buy on Prime Day?

In past years, Prime Day laptop sales were a mix of old and new models, and I would expect that to be the same for 2023. PC makers have largely updated last year’s models with new processors from Intel and AMD, specifically laptops running 12th-gen Intel Core-series and AMD Ryzen 6000-series chips.

New laptops that feature 13th-gen Intel Core-series and AMD Ryzen 7000-series processors will be available, too. Going by our benchmark tests, the performance increase from the last-gen laptops is more noticeable with the higher-end processors. For budget-conscious buyers, a slightly older laptop will be the best bargain and likely won’t disappoint for everyday use. I expect to see Prime Day discounts on laptops with Intel’s 11th-gen Core-series and AMD’s Ryzen 5000-series chips, too.

Regardless of price, I recommend buying only laptops that are listed as sold by Amazon and that ship from Amazon. There are plenty of reputable third-party sellers on Amazon, but if you’re unfamiliar with the seller, it’s safer to buy directly from Amazon. It also typically means you’re getting the best price for Prime Day.

  • Is Your Android Super Slow? Check Out These 7 Tips to Give Your Phone a Boost

Is Your Android Super Slow? Check Out These 7 Tips to Give Your Phone a Boost

Unless you have a supported Google Pixel phone like the new Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, you may not always have access to the latest Android updates as they are released. But even if you can’t upgrade to the latest version of Android right now, you can still try to improve your Android’s performance with the existing software you have.

No matter if you’ve got a Samsung Galaxy, Motorola or OnePlus, you can optimize your battery life and speed up your phone by tinkering with certain settings on your smartphone.

    CNET Tech Tips logo

Note that not all Android devices are totally the same, and phone manufacturers often put their own software on top of Android, so be aware that certain settings may be missing or in a different place, depending on the version of Android you’re running and the maker of your phone.

Want more Android tips? Check out these five tips to make your Android feel like new again and how to stop giving your Android apps invasive permissions (and why that’s important).

Settings to improve your battery life

Living with a phone that has poor battery life can be infuriating, but there are some steps you can take to maximize each charge right from the very beginning:

    1. Turn off auto screen brightness or adaptive brightness and set the brightness level slider to under 50%.

The brighter your screen, the more battery power it uses.

To get to the setting, pull down the shortcut menu from the top of the screen and adjust the slider, if it’s there. Some phones may have a toggle for auto brightness in the shortcut panel; otherwise, you need to open the settings app and search for “brightness” to find the setting and turn it off.

    2. Use Adaptive Battery and Battery Optimization.

These features focus on learning how you use your phone, including which apps you use and when, and then optimizing the apps and the amount of battery they use.

Some Android phones will have a dedicated Battery section in the Settings app, while other phones (looking at you, Samsung) bury these settings. It’s a little different for each phone. I recommend opening your settings and searching for “battery” to find the right screen. Your phone may also have an adaptive charging setting that can monitor how quickly your phone battery charges overnight to preserve its health.

Why you should use Dark mode more often

Another way to improve battery life while also helping save your eyes is to use Android’s dedicated dark mode. Any Android phone running Android 10 or newer will have a dedicated dark mode option.

According to Google, dark mode not only reduces the strain that smartphone displays cause on our eyes

but also improves battery life because it takes less power to display dark backgrounds on OLED displays (used in most flagship phones) than a white background.

Depending on which version of Android your phone is running, and what company made your phone, you may have to dig around the settings app to find a dark mode. If your phone runs Android 10 or newer, you’ll be able to turn on systemwide dark mode. If it runs Android 9, don’t despair. Plenty of apps have their own dark mode option in the settings that you can use whether or not you have Android 10.

To turn it on dark mode, open the Settings app and search for Dark Mode, Dark Theme or even Night Mode (as Samsung likes to call it). I suggest using dark mode all the time, but if you’re not sure, you can always set dark mode to automatically turn on based on a schedule, say from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. every day, or allow it to automatically switch based on your location at the time of sunset and sunrise.

Keep your home screen free of clutter

Planning to hit up the Google Play Store for a bunch of new Android apps? Be prepared for a lot of icon clutter on your home screen, which is where shortcuts land every time you install something.

If you don’t want that, there’s a simple way out of this: Long-press on an empty area of your home screen and tap Settings. Find the option labeled something along the lines of Add icon to Home Screen or Add new apps to Home Screen and turn it off.

Presto! No more icons on the home screen when you install new apps. You can still add shortcuts by dragging an app’s icon out of the app drawer, but they won’t appear on your home screen unless you want them to.

Set up Do Not Disturb so that you can better focus

If your phone routinely spends the night on your nightstand, you probably don’t want it beeping or buzzing every time there’s a call, message or Facebook alert — especially when you’re trying to sleep. Android offers a Do Not Disturb mode that will keep the phone more or less silent during designated hours. On some phones, this is referred to as the Downtime setting or even Quiet Time.

Head to Settings > Sounds (or Notifications), then look for Do Not Disturb or a similar name. If you can’t find it, search for it using the built-in search feature in your settings.

Using the feature, you can set up a range of hours when you want to turn off the digital noise. But don’t worry, any notifications you get while Do Not Disturb is turned on will still be waiting for you when you wake up. Also, you can typically make an exception that allows repeat callers and favorite contacts’ calls to go through. Turn that on. If someone is calling you in an emergency, odds are they are going to keep trying.

Find My Device feature on Android

Always be prepared in case you lose your phone or it’s stolen

Is there anything worse than a lost or stolen phone? Only the knowledge that you could have tracked it down if you had turned on Google’s Find My Device feature.

To set yourself up for a successful recovery, here’s what you need to do: Open the Settings app and then search for Find My Device. It’s usually in the Security section of the Settings app.

Or if you have a Samsung device, you can use Samsung’s Find My Mobile service found in Settings > Biometrics and security > Find My Mobile.

Once that’s enabled, you can head to android.com/find from any PC or mobile device and sign in to your account. Samsung users can visit findmymobile.samsung.com to find a lost phone.

    TCL 10 Pro Android phone

If you run into any trouble setting any of this up, be sure to read through our complete guide to finding a lost Android phone.

Assuming your phone is on and online, you should be able to see its location on a map. From there you can make it ring, lock it, set a lock screen note to tell whoever has it how to get it back to you or, worst-case scenario, remotely wipe the whole thing.

And always keep your phone up to date

As obvious as it may seem, bugs and other issues slowing down your Android device could potentially be fixed with a simple software update.

Before you download and install the latest software update, make sure your device is connected to Wi-Fi, or else this won’t work.

Now, open the Settings application and type in Update. You’ll then either see Software update or System update — choose either one. Then just download the software, wait for a few minutes and install it when it’s ready. Your Android device will reboot and install the latest software update available.

  • iOS 17.1 Beta 2: What Apple Could Bring to Your iPhone Soon

iOS 17.1 Beta 2: What Apple Could Bring to Your iPhone Soon

Apple released the second iOS 17.1 public beta for the iPhone on Wednesday. The second iOS 17.1 beta arrives about two weeks after the release of iOS 17 and about a week and a half after the release of iOS 17.0.1 and iOS 17.0.2. The update brings a few new features and bug fixes to the iPhones of beta testers and developers.

We recommend downloading a beta only on something other than your primary device. Since this is a beta version of iOS 17.1, these features might be buggy and battery life may be short, and it’s best to keep that on a secondary device.

If you’re a developer or public beta tester, here are some of the new features you can find in iOS 17.1 beta 2. Note that the beta is still ongoing, so these might not be the only new features to land on your iPhone when iOS 17.1 is released. There’s no word on the public release for iOS 17.1 just yet.

    New StandBy mode settings

An iPhone with its Standby screen active

StandBy mode is one of my favorite new iOS features, and in iOS 17.1 beta 2, Apple gives StandBy mode more setting options. With iOS 17.1 beta 2, you have the option to turn StandBy mode off after 20 seconds, never or “Automatically.” Apple writes that if you choose Automatically, the display will turn off when your iPhone is not in use and the room is dark, like when you’re sleeping at night.

However, I checked these settings on my iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone XR and only found these options on my iPhone 14 Pro. This makes me think the new settings will only be available on iPhones with an always-on display.

    Apple Music upgrades

In iOS 17.1 beta 1, Apple added a new button in Apple Music that allows you to quickly Favorite songs. When a song is playing and you’re looking at its card on your iPhone, there’s a star outline near the song’s title. You can tap this star to add the song to your Favorites.

Options for All Albums, Favorited, Title, Recently Added and Artist in Apple Music

There’s also a new way to find all your Favorited playlists, albums and songs. To find them, go into the corresponding category in Apple Music, tap the button in the top-right corner of your screen, and tap Favorited.

Apple Music also shows you song suggestions in iOS 17.1 beta 1. To see them, go into any of your playlists and scroll to the bottom of the playlist to see a section called Song Suggestions. These are songs that the app thinks you might like based on your musical tastes.

    AirDrop using cellular data

With iOS 17, Apple upgraded AirDrop with NameDrop, which allows two devices to tap each other and exchange contact information — kind of like exchanging digital business cards. And in the first iOS 17.1 beta, Apple now lets you use cellular data to send and receive information over AirDrop when two iPhones are out of range of each other.

    Flashlight symbol in Live Activities

Have you ever accidentally switched on your iPhone’s flashlight and had someone point it out to you later? Some iPhone users won’t have to worry about that anymore. In iOS 17.1 beta 1, when you turn on your flashlight, a little flashlight symbol appears in the Live Activities feed across the top of the screen of my iPhone 14 Pro. However, I couldn’t replicate this symbol on my iPhone XR, so this feature likely only works on Live Activity-enabled iPhones, like the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 15 lineup.

    New ringtones are back

Two lists of ringtones on the iPhone

When Apple released iOS 17, it included all-new ringtones and text tones. Apple then removed those sounds with iOS 17.1 beta 1, but the ringtones and text tones appear to be back with iOS 17.1 beta 2. You can still find all the older sounds under Classic on the Ringtone and Text Tone setting pages.

Those are some of the major new features developers and beta testers will see in the second iOS 17.1 beta. That doesn’t mean these are the only features coming to the next iOS update, or that these changes will stick when iOS 17.1 is released to the public.

  • ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ Streaming on Peacock: Release Date and Time

‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ Streaming on Peacock: Release Date and Time

Five Nights at Freddy’s — a movie based on the popular horror video game series — is creeping closer to theaters and the Peacock streaming service.

The cast of the flick — which debuts a few days before Halloween — includes Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games), Elizabeth Lail (You) and Matthew Lillard (Scream). Hutcherson plays Mike, who starts working as a night security guard at an abandoned theme restaurant, per Universal Pictures. A trailer reveals some of the animatronic-related frights that await.

Five Nights at Freddy’s is produced by Blumhouse and directed by Emma Tammi. The film is among the latest video game adaptations to reach audiences (it joins a notable one, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, on Peacock). Here’s when fans can tune in, plus why you may want to use a VPN if you’re streaming it.

When to watch Five Nights at Freddy’s on Peacock

Viewers in the US can catch the scary movie on Peacock starting at 8 p.m. ET on Oct. 26. It’s scheduled to hit theaters on Oct. 27, but you may be able to catch a screening a day earlier on the 26th. (I saw showtimes in places such as New York City, Houston and Los Angeles.)

After a recent price hike, Peacock Premium is $6 per month for new subscribers and Premium Plus is $12 per month for new subs. (Previously, the services cost $5 and $10 a month, respectively.) Those using the free tier of Peacock will need to upgrade to a paid plan to watch Five Nights at Freddy’s.

How to watch Five Nights at Freddy’s from anywhere with a VPN

Perhaps you’re traveling abroad and want to stream Peacock while away from home. With a VPN, you’re able to virtually change your location on your phone, tablet or laptop to get access to the movie from anywhere in the world. There are other good reasons to use a VPN for streaming too.

A VPN is the best way to stop your ISP from throttling your speeds by encrypting your traffic. Using a VPN is also a great idea if you’re traveling and find yourself connected to a Wi-Fi network and want to add an extra layer of privacy for your devices and logins. Streaming TV can be a bit smoother with a reliable, quality VPN that’s passed our tests and security standards.

You can use a VPN to stream content legally as long as VPNs are allowed in your country and you have a valid subscription to the streaming service you’re using. The US and Canada are among the countries where VPNs are legal, but we advise against streaming or downloading content on illegal torrent sites. We recommend ExpressVPN, but you may opt for another provider from our best list such as Surfshark or NordVPN.

Follow the VPN provider’s instructions for installation and choose a country where Five Nights at Freddy’s will be streaming on Peacock. Before you open the streaming app, make sure you are connected to your VPN using your selected region. If you want to stream Five Nights at Freddy’s on more than one device, it’s possible you’ll need to configure each one to ensure you’re signed in. Go to settings and check your network connections to verify you’re logged in and connected to your VPN account. Now you’re ready to open Peacock to stream.

If you run into issues with streaming, first make sure your VPN is up and running on its encrypted IP address. Double-check that you’ve followed installation instructions correctly and you’ve picked the right geographical area for viewing. If you still encounter connection problems, you may need to reboot your device. Close all apps and windows, restart your device and connect to your VPN first. Note that some streaming services have restrictions on VPN access.

  • Grab a 4K TCL Fire TV for Less With Up to 26% Off Select Models at Amazon

Grab a 4K TCL Fire TV for Less With Up to 26% Off Select Models at Amazon

We’re less than a week away from the start of Amazon’s October Prime Day sale, which is sure to bring some steep discounts on its Fire TVs. But you don’t have to wait until Oct. 10 to start saving. The online retailer is already offering up to 26% off select TCL Fire TVs, with prices starting at just $260. There’s no set expiration for these deals, so we’d recommend getting your order in sooner rather than later if you don’t want to miss out on these bargains.

There are two different TCL models to choose from at this sale. The Class S4 series is the more affordable option, with prices starting at $260 for the 50-inch model, which saves you $90 compared to the usual price. It boasts a 4K ultra HD display, and features a sleek, bezel-less design that helps it blend in with your home’s decor. It also has Dolby Atmos support for immersive, room-filling audio and has a preset gaming mode to help minimize input lag.

Or you can upgrade to the TCL Q6, which starts at $400 for the 55-inch model, $100 off the usual price. • Get a Lifetime License to Microsoft Office 2021 for Just $33

Get a Lifetime License to Microsoft Office 2021 for Just $33

Online subscriptions and software can cost a pretty penny, but for those of you hoping to find bargains ahead of Amazon’s upcoming October Prime Day sale, StackSocial has a number of major deals happening right now. During the company’s Deal Days sale — which runs now through Oct. 15 — you can save big on tons of popular items, including Microsoft Office.

Having access to Microsoft’s suite of productivity tools — including programs like Word and Excel — is essential for students and professionals alike. However, not all schools and employers provide access to this software, and trying to get a license on you own can be difficult. In fact, a lifetime Office Professional 2021 license costs a whopping $440 when you purchase through Microsoft directly. That’s why you won’t want to miss out on this StackSocial deal, which saves you 85%, dropping the price down to just $33 for both Mac and Windows users.

Just note that Mac users will only get the basic Home and Business suite, while Windows users will get the Professional suite, which includes Office Publisher and Office Access as well. This limited-time offer is only available through Oct. 15, so be sure to get your order in before then if you don’t want to miss out on these savings.

    Microsoft Office 2021

StackSocial’s deal is a great bargain when compared with the online Microsoft 365 subscription suite, which starts at $7 a month or $70 a year for individuals. There’s a free online version of Microsoft Office that you can use as well, but it isn’t nearly as feature complete. (Separately — and notably — Apple users should note that Outlook is now a free app for the Mac.)

Now, a deal this good comes with some caveats. First, the code provided can be used one time for a single computer, so you won’t be able to install it on multiple machines in your home, and if your current computer happens to die, you could run into a snag when trying to transfer it. Likewise, you’re passing up on other benefits you’d get as a 365 subscriber. You won’t get any OneDrive Cloud Storage, nor will you get the fancy new cloud-based AI features like Microsoft Copilot. And while the apps should continue to work as long as your computer does, Microsoft’s support for this version of Office ends on Oct. 13, 2026.

To that last point: Though this is listed as a “lifetime license” — that is, the lifetime of the computer you installed it on — it’s worth noting there’s always a risk that Microsoft could terminate the license. But versions of StackSocial’s deal have been running for more than a year — the one we bought in early 2022, for instance, still works fine.
