  • Meet Sora, OpenAI’s Text-to-Video Generator

    Meet Sora, OpenAI’s Text-to-Video Generator

Not to be outdone by competitors like Google, which recently previewed a text-to-video tool, AI startup OpenAI on Thursday introduced its own text-to-video model, Sora.

Like Google’s Lumiere, Sora’s availability is limited. Unlike Lumiere, Sora can generate videos up to 1 minute long.

Text-to-video has become the latest arms race in generative AI as OpenAI, Google, Microsoft and more look beyond text and image generation and seek to cement their position in a sector projected to reach $1.3 trillion in revenue by 2032 –and to win over consumers who’ve been intrigued by generative AI since ChatGPT arrived a little more than a year ago.

According to a post from OpenAI, maker of both ChatGPT and Dall-E, Sora will be available to “red teamers,” or experts in areas like misinformation, hateful content and bias, who will be “adversarially testing the model,” as well as visual artists, designers and filmmakers to gain additional feedback from creative professionals. That adversarial testing will be especially important to address the potential for convincing deepfakes, a major area of concern for the use of AI to create images and video.

In addition to garnering feedback from outside the organization, the AI startup said it wants to share its progress now to “give the public a sense of what AI capabilities are on the horizon.”

    Strengths

One thing that may set Sora apart is its ability to interpret long prompts — including one example that clocked in at 135 words. The sample video OpenAI shared on Thursday demonstrate Sora can create a variety of characters and scenes, from people and animals and fluffy monsters to cityscapes, landscapes, zen gardens and even New York City submerged underwater.

This is thanks in part to OpenAI’s past work with its Dall-E and GPT models. Text-to-image generator Dall-E 3 was released in September. CNET’s Stephen Shankland called it “a big step up from Dall-E 2 from 2022.” (OpenAI’s latest AI model, GPT-4 Turbo, arrived in November.)

In particular, Sora borrows Dall-E 3’s recaptioning technique, which OpenAI says generates “highly descriptive captions for the visual training data.”

“Sora is able to generate complex scenes with multiple characters, specific types of motion and accurate details of the subject and background,” the post said. “The model understands not only what the user has asked for in the prompt, but also how those things exist in the physical world.”

The sample videos OpenAI shared do appear remarkably realistic — except perhaps when a human face appears close up or when sea creatures are swimming. Otherwise, you might be hard-pressed to tell what is real and what isn’t.

The model also can generate video from still images and extend existing videos or fill in missing frames, much like Lumiere can do.

“Sora serves as a foundation for models that can understand and simulate the real world, a capability we believe will be an important milestone for achieving AGI,” the post added.

AGI, or artificial general intelligence, is a more advanced form of AI that’s closer to human-like intelligence and includes the ability to perform a greater range of tasks. Meta and DeepMind have also expressed interest in reaching this benchmark.

    Weaknesses

OpenAI conceded Sora has weaknesses, like struggling to accurately depict the physics of a complex scene and to understand cause and effect.

“For example, a person might take a bite out of a cookie, but afterward, the cookie may not have a bite mark,” the post said.

And anyone that still has to make an L with their hands to figure out which one is left can take heart: Sora mixes up left and right too.

OpenAI didn’t share when Sora will be widely available but noted it wants to take “several important safety steps” first. That includes meeting OpenAI’s existing safety standards, which prohibit extreme violence, sexual content, hateful imagery, celebrity likeness and the IP of others.

“Despite extensive research and testing, we cannot predict all of the beneficial ways people will use our technology, nor all the ways people will abuse it,” the post added. “That’s why we believe that learning from real-world use is a critical component of creating and releasing increasingly safe AI systems over time.”

  • You Have Just a Few Days Left to Get Microsoft Office on Mac or Windows for Just $30

You Have Just a Few Days Left to Get Microsoft Office on Mac or Windows for Just $30

If you need access to the Microsoft Office suite of apps, but you won’t use it enough to justify signing up for a $7 per month Microsoft 365 subscription, then springing for one of the older versions may be a good idea save some cash and avoid recurring charges. StackSocial is offering lifetime licenses to Microsoft Office Professional 2019 for just $30, which is a whopping 86% discount on the original $229 price tag. This deal applies to both the Mac and Windows versions of the software, so you can grab it regardless of which OS you run. But be quick if you’re interested — this offer ends Feb. 19.

There are actually two versions of Office here. Mac users will get the basic Home and Business suite of apps, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams and OneNote, while Windows users will get the Professional Plus version with more apps. Just note that you won’t get Microsoft Teams here.

This isn’t the latest version of Office, but compared to signing up for the Microsoft 365 subscription suite, which costs $7 a month or $70 a year for individuals, StackSocial’s offer is a great deal. There is a free online version of Microsoft Office out there that you can use, but it lacks several features, so this may be a better option. Also, Apple users should note that Outlook is now available as a free app for the Mac.

Some important things to note — you’ll get a one-time use code for a single computer, which means you won’t be able to download these apps on multiple devices. And that does mean that if you upgrade to a new computer or your current one dies, you likely won’t be able to transfer the suite. These licenses also lack some of the added conveniences you’ll get with a 365 subscription, including OneDrive cloud storage and cloud-based AI features, including Microsoft Copilot. Additionally, these apps should work for as long as your computer does, but the Mac license has reached the end of its lifecycle, which means Microsoft’s support for this version of Office has ended. Windows users will have extended support through Oct. 14, 2025. There is also a risk that Microsoft could terminate the license at any time, but we’ve been running other versions of Office from StackSocial since early 2022 and have yet to encounter a problem.

Now that you have some sweet new software you might need a computer to go with it. Make sure to check out our regularly updated list of the best laptop deals to make sure you don’t overpay.

  • Google Teases an Even Better Version of Gemini, but You’ll Have to Wait for It

Google Teases an Even Better Version of Gemini, but You’ll Have to Wait for It

Another day, another generative AI update.

Google’s AI subsidiary DeepMind has previewed Gemini 1.5 Pro, an upgraded model of Google’s renamed Bard chatbot Gemini. Gemini got its new name less than a week ago along with the release of the premium, paid version, Ultra, which Google called “our largest and most capable state-of-the-art AI model.”

Gemini 1.5 Pro is the latest evolution of Google’s chatbot, which also recently gained the ability to generate images from text.

Gemini 1.5 Pro can ingest video, images, audio and text in order to answer questions, and it boasts multiple advantages over its predecessors — but most of us can’t get our hands on it yet. In a call with press on Wednesday, DeepMind announced it’s giving access to developers and enterprise customers first.

Oriol Vinyals, vice president of research at Google DeepMind and co-lead of Gemini, called this a “research release” for “an audience that understands the technology really well.”

“When you create a new model — and especially when we unlock some new capabilities — I think it makes sense to see what creative minds … can do with the model to understand what will this model [do], how will this matter to users ultimately?” Vinyals added.

DeepMind will “roll it out slowly” to regular Joes and Janes via a wait list.

The limited release of Gemini 1.5 Pro comes amid a flurry of activity in a sector projected to reach $1.3 trillion in revenue by 2032. Meanwhile, ChatGPT maker OpenAI has released its GPT-4 Turbo large language model and allows anyone to create custom AI apps for its app store. Microsoft intends to add a dedicated key on Windows 11 laptops and PCs to launch its AI tool, Copilot.

Better performance, new architecture and a longer context window

Gemini 1.5 Pro is “as capable as” the Gemini 1.0 Ultra model, which Google announced on Feb. 8. The 1.5 Pro model has a win rate — a measurement of how many benchmarks it can outperform — of 87% compared to 1.0 Pro and 55% against 1.0 Ultra. So 1.5 Pro is essentially an upgraded version of the best available model now.

Research advances quickly. “We get these sorts of breakthroughs and new model versions every few months or so,” Vinyals said. “When a model is more capable, what you would then try to [do is] make sure it basically can be a drop-in replacement from the previous generation in the sense that it’s more capable, so hopefully it can do what it was doing already, but better.”

According to Vinyals, 1.5 Pro is also “very efficient” thanks to a unique architecture, which can answer questions by zeroing in on expert sources in that particular subject rather than seeking the answer from all possible sources.

Finally, 1.5 Pro has a long context window, which means it can ingest up to 1 million tokens, which is equal to 1 hour of video or 11 hours of audio, 30,000 lines of code or 700,000 words.

“The longer and the more complex questions and your interactions are, the longer the context gets that the model needs to be able to deal with,” Vinyals said.

    Gemini 1.5 Pro in action

So, for example, you can feed 1.5 Pro the Apollo 11 transcript and ask the AI to find funny moments. Or you can share a rudimentary drawing and ask the model to find the moment the sketch depicts, such as Neil Armstrong’s “One small step for man” quote.

“That’s an example of uploading a very long document that you might not have had the time to read and then really interact with it in this very interesting way,” Vinyals said.

Gemini 1.5 Pro users can also ask the model to find specific moments within a video, including silent Buster Keaton films, via text and image.

Finally, Gemini 1.5 Pro can “operate in many languages,” including Spanish.

After feeding 1.5 Pro a grammar book and a dictionary of kalamang, a language from western New Guinea with fewer than 200 speakers, the model was able to translate a sentence to English.

“It takes a few seconds to process and voila, you now have an expert of this language,” Vinyals said.

But Gemini 1.5 Pro is still subject to common challenges like hallucinations.

“The model will sometimes fail and it’s a work in progress for the whole community to get these models better,” Vinyals said. “But, of course, they’re incredibly useful and you just need to understand their limitations.”

    What about Ultra 1.0?

Less than a week ago, Google announced Gemini Advanced, a new “experience” that provides access to its Ultra 1.0 AI model for consumers willing to pay $20 a month.

Does that mean Google just made Ultra 1.0 obsolete? Not according to Vinyals. “We are some time away from getting 1.5 Pro out.”

  • Everything to Expect From MWC 2024

Everything to Expect From MWC 2024

Mobile World Congress sees almost all of the world’s biggest tech companies descend on Barcelona every year to show off the latest and greatest in mobile technology. This year will be no different, with many major brands already teasing their launches ahead of the show’s official opening on Monday, Feb. 26.

We will be there in person this year, armed with laptops, cameras and a thirst for the next big thing. Also we’ll have tapas and beer, because Barcelona.

Read more: Best Phones to Buy for 2024

So what can we actually expect from the show? Let’s pop our safety hats on and dive into the rumor mill.

Image of the Nothing Phone 2

    Phones, lots of phones

It’s a mobile-focused show, so it’s safe to assume that we’ll see new phones from a whole variety of brands. In typical years we’d see launches from the likes of Nokia, TCL, Honor and a host of others and we’d absolutely expect to see new launches this time round. In fact, Honor has already confirmed the launch of its flagship Magic 6 Pro on Feb. 25.

London-based mobile brand Nothing was rumored to be launching its new phone, the Nothing Phone 2A at MWC, but the company confirmed a launch event on March 5, so this technically falls outside of MWC timings. Still, it’s close enough to deserve a mention on this list.

    Mind-bending folding concepts from Motorola

Last year Motorola treated us to an amazing concept phone that featured a rollable display that automatically extended out of the phone. It was an exciting product to be able to see in the flesh, although the company made no comment on whether it would ever actually go on sale.

Back in October, Motorola teased a different sort of bendable device: a phone that can be worn like a bracelet. While the company hasn’t said anything about launching this concept as a real product, we firmly expect it to be shown off in person at MWC and we’re excited to potentially get our hands (well, wrists) on it.

    OnePlus concepts and Watch 2

Speaking of concepts, OnePlus has a good track record of showing off quirky concept versions of its devices at the show. Last year we were treated to a liquid-cooled version of its OnePlus 11 flagship. The company hasn’t yet teased any kind of new concept for this year’s show, but we remain hopeful for something unusual to be on display.

We may, however, get an actual product from the company in the form of the OnePlus Watch 2. The company’s first generation wearable launched back in 2021 and didn’t really impress. We don’t know anything about the watch itself, but some rumors suggest it will be unveiled at the show. Stay tuned, watch fans.

Stephen Shankland wearing an Apple Vision Pro headset and manipulating photos with his fingers

Smart rings and mixed reality headsets

Samsung teased its upcoming wearable, the Galaxy Ring, during its Galaxy Unpacked event in January but we’ve so far seen very little of it. It’s possible that Samsung may show off more of the ring — or at least let us put one on — during the show. Or it might continue to keep its cards close to its chest.

Either way, big tech announcements like this have a habit of sparking similar ideas from other players and it’s quite likely we’ll see similar wearables at the show from other brands. Whether these take the form of rings, or if we’ll see a sudden influx of smart necklaces or smart nose piercings, remains to be seen.

But the same is likely to be true of mixed reality or spatial computing headsets. Apple’s Vision Pro is making big waves in the tech world and even managed to impress our very own Scott Stein, who called it “a mind-blowing look at an unfinished future.” While Apple never attends these shows, it’s highly likely that we’ll see competing devices from brands wanting to get in on the headset computing action.

    Xiaomi’s new SU7 electric car

Rumors suggest that Xiaomi will be taking the wraps off its latest Xiaomi 14 and 14 Ultra phones, with the latter featuring titanium in order to keep pace with Apple and Samsung. Exciting stuff, for sure, but the company might have an even bigger product to show off.

Xiaomi has been clear since 2021 about its plans to get into the automotive market and at the end of last year it announced its first EV, the Xiaomi SU7. Xiaomi plans to become one of the top five car manufacturers in the world, so we firmly expect this vehicle to appear in some form as part of the company’s 2024 MWC showcase.

  • You Can Take Stunning Long-Exposure Photos Using Just Your iPhone

You Can Take Stunning Long-Exposure Photos Using Just Your iPhone

If you’ve looked at arty pictures of waterfalls or rivers then you’ll no doubt have seen those creative long-exposure shots where the water is intentionally blurred but the surroundings — the rocks and trees — remain pin-sharp. It’s a great technique to give the impression of motion in a still image and it used to be something you’d need a DSLR with filters and tripods to take. But a neat feature built right into the iPhone’s camera lets you take shots that look just as good. You don’t even need the latest iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max to take advantage of this feature. It works on any iPhone launched after the iPhone 6.

Read more: Take Your Best Ever Photos With Your iPhone

    CNET Tech Tips logo

The technique uses Live Photos, a feature that turns a still image into a short animation by recording a few seconds of video when you fire the shutter. By analyzing which objects are moving, the iPhone captures the movement and blurs it. It’s also able to recognize what isn’t moving (a rock or a wall, for example) and attempts to keep those objects sharp and in focus. This lets you capture long-exposure images in even bright midday sun without using a tripod or filter. Take that, DSLRs.

A comparison image of a sea jetty with and without the long exposure effect

Here’s how you can do it.

Know what makes a good long-exposure shot

Not everything works as a long-exposure image. A close-up of a flower blowing in the breeze will just become a blurry mess, while a picture of a static car will remain, well, static.

What you need is a scene where there are both static and moving elements. Waterfalls are common subjects as the rushing water will be blurred while the rocks all around will remain solid. Any body of water, really, would be a good subject to experiment with.

An example image from a Disney park showing the long exposure effect

You can also try busy city streets. The long-exposure effect keeps the buildings and roads sharp and fixed in the image, but the people walking all around will be blurred into ghostly figures, which looks atmospheric and dramatic.

    Turn on Live Photos

Getting a long-exposure image requires the movement that’s recorded in a Live Photo, so it’s critical that that mode is activated when shooting. It’s located in the top right of the screen in the camera (when held in portrait orientation) or the top left (in landscape orientation). You’ll see an icon of two circles surrounded by a third dotted circle. If there’s no line through it, then Live Photos is activated. If there’s a line through it, tap the icon and you’ll see the message “Live” appear onscreen in a little yellow box.

An image showing the Live Photos button on the iPhone 11's camera screen

    Keep steady

Although the iPhone doesn’t require a tripod to get a good long-exposure image, you’ll get the best results if you keep the phone as steady as possible while it’s taking the Live image. I suggest resting the phone against a wall or some other fixed surface while shooting. If you have to hold the phone in your hand, I find that tucking my elbows in toward my body and holding my breath helps decrease motion blur while taking the shot.

It’s a good idea to take multiple shots too, hammering the shutter button while you hold the position. This way you’ll increase your chances of capturing at least one image that’s stable enough to produce an attractive long exposure.

    Create the long exposure

Once you’ve captured your Live image, it’s time to transform it into the actual long exposure. Start by opening your image in the gallery app. In the top left you’ll see a small icon saying Live with a small downward-pointing arrow next to it. Tap the arrow and you’ll have the option to turn the image into a looping GIF, a bouncing GIF that plays forwards then backwards or, down at the bottom, a long exposure.

It’ll take a second or two, but you’ll quickly see how any motion in your shot has been blurred into the dreamy effect you’re after. You can then zoom in to check that it’s still nice and sharp. Feel free to apply the same effect to other photos you took of the same scene, just in case they worked out better.

If you happen to still be on iOS 14 or older, open the image you’ve settled on in your gallery and swipe up. This will bring up a panel called Effects where you can loop the motion in the video into GIFs. Swipe to the end of the effects panel though and you’ll see one called Long Exposure. Tap it. But you really should update your phone to a more recent version.

Image of a castle next a lake using the long exposure effect

    Check your library

Before you dash out to find your nearest waterfall, have a look through your library to see if you already have images that would work. The great thing about using the iPhone’s long-exposure tool is that you don’t need to use it while you’re shooting. You can go back and apply it to any Live image you’ve taken up until now.

Perhaps you visited Niagara Falls in New York or Havasu Falls in Arizona a few years ago and you happened to have had Live Photos activated when taking your shots. You can swipe up and activate long exposure on any of those shots. You can even go into your Live Photos album in your gallery to see all the shots you’ve got on your phone that can be transformed into long exposures. My advice? Put a good podcast on, settle into a comfy chair and see what dreamy shots you can dig out of your library.

  • ProRes Log Video on iPhone 15 Pro: Everything You Need to Know

ProRes Log Video on iPhone 15 Pro: Everything You Need to Know

The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max’s cameras got a serious boost for video production by being able to shoot high-quality 4K Apple ProRes video in Log color profile. That might sound like a big string of jargon, but what it means is professional-standard, beautiful-looking video footage, right out of your phone.

But what do Log and ProRes mean, how is it better, and crucially, is it something you should use? Here’s what you need to know.

Read more: iPhone 15 Pro: Great Battery Life, Fast Performance

    What is ProRes?

ProRes is a video codec created by Apple in 2007 that has been widely adopted by video and cinema professionals. Typically found on high-end video cameras costing many thousands of dollars, ProRes files capture more data when shooting, resulting in better quality footage than you’d typically get from a phone or even some dedicated cameras.

    What is Log video?

Log (short for “logarithmic”) is a color profile found on some professional video cameras and which is now also available on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Log footage preserves image information in the highlights and shadows, allowing for more flexibility in editing colors and contrast in post production.

    iphone-log-graded-before-after-test

Why does Log video look gray and washed out?

Log files straight out of the camera look flat and have low contrast and low saturation. The files are designed to be edited in programs like Adobe Premiere or DaVinci Resolve, where colorists will bring back contrast and color tone according to the look they’re trying to achieve, a process called color grading.

The low-contrast look of ungraded footage gives colorists the best starting point to tweak the video image however they want. Log footage always needs to be edited and graded before being used.

How do I edit Log video?

While Apple has yet to implement specific color editing tools for Log footage on the iPhone, you can get some of the way there using some of the exposure tools in the ‘Edit’ options in the Photos app. However, you’ll get your best results by transferring the files to your iPad, Mac or Windows PC and editing in dedicated video production apps.

My favorite is DaVinci Resolve by BlackMagic, which is an industry-standard piece of software used in professional productions and Hollywood films. It’s known for its flexibility with editing color, and I loved using it to see what looks I can achieve from video footage from both the iPhone 15 Pro Max and BlackMagic’s own Pocket Cinema Camera.

    screenshot-2023-10-26-at-11-44-49.png

Resolve is available on Macs and PCs but there’s also an excellent iPad app version. Best of all, the software is free to use on all platforms, with only some advanced features requiring the paid-for Studio version. But anyone wanting to spice up their footage will find the free version more than capable.

Can my phone shoot ProRes Log video?

Apple introduced the ability to shoot with the ProRes codec on the iPhone 12 Pro, but right now only the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max can also shoot in Log.

I Took 600+ Photos With the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Look at My Favorites

    See all photos

How do you turn on ProRes and Log video?

On your iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max, go into Settings, then scroll down and tap Camera. Then tap Formats, and within this sub-menu you’ll see a section for Video Capture. Toggle Apple ProRes to on and below will be the options for ProRes Encoding. Tapping on it will allow you to switch between HDR, SDR or Log.

    iphone-15-prores-log-video-tutorial-2

Bear in mind that while you can toggle ProRes on or off directly in the Camera app, you have to go back to the Settings app if you want to switch from Log to HDR or vice versa. You can shoot 4K footage at 30 frames per second on the phone, but if you want to shoot at 60 frames per second, you’ll need to connect an external SSD drive via USB-C and record directly to that. While you can shoot ProRes footage without Log, you can only shoot Log with ProRes.

Do you have to use the iPhone camera app to shoot ProRes Log video?

No, Apple has opened up this feature to third-party apps. My recommendation is the BlackMagic Camera app, which gives the same level of control over settings as you’d find on the company’s professional cameras. It’s a superb tool for getting the best-looking video out of your phone and, like DaVinci Resolve, it’s free.

Should I shoot video in ProRes Log?

ProRes footage in Log profile is very specialized. It requires additional time in post production to color grade the footage, and the file sizes are many times larger than regular video files. If you just want to shoot footage of your family gathering or your mates at the beach to upload to Instagram or YouTube, then you don’t need to worry about ProRes or Log.

However if you want to use your iPhone 15 Pro as a professional video production tool and you have the time and resources to color grade and edit your footage, then you should absolutely give it a go. The flexibility of recording allows you to get video out of your iPhone that would give dedicated cinema cameras a run for their money, and it makes the iPhone 15 Pro an exceptionally powerful camera for content creators looking to add some professional flair to their videos.
